Psalms 35:12-14 in English

¹² They reward me evil for good, To the bereaving of my soul.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I afflicted my soul with fasting; And my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother: I bowed down mourning, as one that bewaileth his mother.

¹² Let not the foot of pride come against me, and let not the hand of sinners move me.

¹³ There have all the workers of iniquity fallen: they are cast out, and shall not be able to stand.

¹² They rewarded me evil for good to the spoiling of my soul.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I humbled my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

¹⁴ I pleased so as our neighbour, as our brother; I was made meek, so as mourning and sorrowful.

¹² They yielded to me evils for goods; barrenness to my soul. (They gave me evil for good; making my soul barren.)

¹³ But when they were dis-easeful to me; I was clothed in an hair-shirt. I meeked my soul in fasting; and my prayer shall be turned (again) into my bosom. (But yet when they were sick; I was clothed in a hair-shirt. I humbled myself with fasting; and I prayed to the Lord for them.)

¹⁴ I pleased so as our neighbour, as our brother; I was made meek, so as mourning and sorrowful. (I went around, like he was my neighbour, or my brother; I was humbled, like one mourning and sorrowful for his own mother.)

¹² They pay me evil for good, bereaving my soul,

¹³ And I — in their sickness my clothing is sackcloth, I have humbled with fastings my soul, And my prayer unto my bosom returneth.

¹⁴ As if a friend, as if my brother, I walked habitually, As a mourner for a mother, Mourning I have bowed down.
