Psalms 18:5-22 in American Standard Version (1901)

5 The cords of Sheol were round about me; The snares of death came upon me.
6 In my distress I called upon Jehovah, And cried unto my God: He heard my voice out of his temple, And my cry before him came into his ears.
7 Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations also of the mountains quaked And were shaken, because he was wroth.
8 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, And fire out of his mouth devoured: Coals were kindled by it.
9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down; And thick darkness was under his feet.
10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly; Yea, he soared upon the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his hiding-place, his pavilion round about him, Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
12 At the brightness before him his thick clouds passed, Hailstones and coals of fire.
13 Jehovah also thundered in the heavens, And the Most High uttered his voice, Hailstones and coals of fire.
14 And he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; Yea, lightnings manifold, and discomfited them.
15 Then the channels of waters appeared, And the foundations of the world were laid bare, At thy rebuke, O Jehovah, At the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.
16 He sent from on high, he took me; He drew me out of many waters.
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, And from them that hated me; for they were too mighty for me.
18 They came upon me in the day of my calamity; But Jehovah was my stay.
19 He brought me forth also into a large place; He delivered me, because he delighted in me.
20 Jehovah hath rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.
21 For I have kept the ways of Jehovah, And have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 For all his ordinances were before me, And I put not away his statutes from me.

Psalms 18:5-22 in Brenton Septuagint Translation

5 Their voice is gone out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.
6 In the sun he has set his tabernacle; and he comes forth as a bridegroom out of his chamber: he will exult as a giant to run his course.
7 His going forth is from the extremity of heaven, and his circuit to the other end of heaven: and no one shall be hidden from his heat.
8 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting souls: the testimony of the Lord is faithful, instructing babes.
9 The ordinances of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is bright, enlightening the eyes.
10 The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring for ever and ever: the judgments of the Lord are true, and justified altogether.
11 To be desired more than gold, and much precious stone: sweeter also than honey and the honey-comb.
12 For thy servant keeps to them: in the keeping of them there is great reward.
13 Who will understand his transgressions? purge thou me from my secret sins.
14 And spare thy servant the attack of strangers: if they do not gain the dominion over me, then shall I be blameless, and I shall be clear from great sin.
15 So shall the sayings of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be pleasing continually before thee, O Lord my helper, and my redeemer.

Psalms 18:5-22 in Translation for Translators

5 It was as though the place where dead people are had ropes that were wrapped around me, or it was as though there was a trap MET that would seize and kill me.
6 But when I was very distressed, I called out to Yahweh, and from his temple he heard me. He listened to me when I cried out for help.
7 Then the earth quaked/shook strongly DOU; the mountains shook very strongly from their centers DOU because Yahweh was angry.
8 It was as though smoke poured out from his nostrils, and as though burning coals came out of his mouth.
9 He opened the sky and came down with a black cloud under his feet.
10 He flew, riding on the back of a creature that had wings, traveling fast, blown along by the wind.
11 Darkness was all around him like a blanket MET; dark clouds, full of moisture, covered him MET.
12 Hailstones and flashes of lightning were around him; hail and burning coals fell from the sky.
13 Then Yahweh spoke in a loud voice from the sky, and his enemies heard his voice that sounded like thunder.
14 He shot his arrows at them and caused them to scatter; His flashes of lightning caused them to become very confused (OR, to run away).
15 The bottom of the ocean became visible, and the foundations of the earth were uncovered, when Yahweh rebuked his enemies when he snorted.
16 It was as though he reached down from heaven and grabbed me and pulled me up out of the deep ocean.
17 He rescued me from my strong enemies who hated me; they were very strong, with the result that I could not defeat them.
18 When I ◄was distressed/had troubles►, they attacked me, but Yahweh defended/protected me.
19 He led me to a place where I was safe; he rescued me because he was pleased with me.
20 Yahweh has rewarded me because I do what is right; he has blessed me because I ◄am innocent/have not done things that are wrong►.
21 I have obeyed Yahweh's laws; I have not abandoned him.
22 My behavior was directed by his rules; I have not stopped obeying them.

Psalms 18:5-22 in Bible in Basic English

5 The cords of hell were round me: the nets of death came on me.
6 In my trouble my voice went up to the Lord, and my cry to my God: my voice came to his hearing in his holy Temple, and my prayer came before him, even into his ears.
7 Then trouble and shock came on the earth; and the bases of the mountains were moved and shaking, because he was angry.
8 There went up a smoke from his nose, and a fire of destruction from his mouth: flames were lighted by it.
9 The heavens were bent, so that he might come down; and it was dark under his feet.
10 And he went in flight through the air, seated on a storm-cloud: going quickly on the wings of the wind.
11 He made the dark his secret place; his tent round him was the dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
12 Before his shining light his dark clouds went past, raining ice and fire.
13 The Lord made thunder in the heavens, and the voice of the Highest was sounding out: a rain of ice and fire.
14 He sent out his arrows, driving them in all directions; by his flames of fire they were troubled.
15 Then the deep beds of the waters were seen, and the bases of the world were uncovered, because of your words of wrath, O Lord, because of the breath from your mouth.
16 He sent from on high, he took me, pulling me out of great waters.
17 He made me free from my strong hater, and from those who were against me, because they were stronger than I.
18 They came on me in the day of my trouble; but the Lord was my support.
19 He took me out into a wide place; he was my saviour because he had delight in me.
20 The Lord gives me the reward of my righteousness, because my hands are clean before him.
21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord; I have not been turned away in sin from my God.
22 For all his decisions were before me, and I did not put away his laws from me.

5 Their sound hath gone forth into all the earth: and their words unto the ends of the world.
6 He hath set his tabernacle in the sun: and he, as a bridegroom coming out of his bride chamber, Hath rejoiced as a giant to run the way:
7 His going out is from the end of heaven, And his circuit even to the end thereof: and there is no one that can hide himself from his heat.
8 The law of the Lord is unspotted, converting souls: the testimony of the Lord is faithful, giving wisdom to little ones.
9 The justices of the Lord are right, rejoicing hearts: the commandment of the Lord is lightsome, enlightening the eyes.
10 The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for ever and ever: the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.
11 More to be desired than gold and many precious stones: and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
12 For thy servant keepeth them, and in keeping them there is a great reward.
13 Who can understand sins? from my secret ones cleanse me, O Lord:
14 And from those of others spare thy servant. If they shall have no dominion over me, then shall I be without spot: and I shall be cleansed from the greatest sin.
15 And the words of my mouth shall be such as may please: and the meditation of my heart always in thy sight. O Lord, my helper, and my redeemer.

5 The grave wound its ropes around me; death set snares for me.
6 In my despair I called on the Lord—I cried out to my God for help. He heard my voice from his Temple—my cry for help reached his ears.
7 The earth shook to and fro; the foundations of the mountains trembled, shaking because of his anger.
8 Smoke came out of his nostrils, and fire came from his mouth; burning coals blazed before him.
9 He parted the heavens and came down, with dark clouds beneath his feet.
10 Riding on an angel he flew, swooping on the wings of the wind.
11 He hid himself in darkness, covering himself with black thunderclouds.
12 Hailstones and burning coals flew out from his brightness, passing through his thick clouds.
13 The Lord thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High sounded among the hailstones and burning coals.
14 He fired his arrows, scattering his enemies; he routed them with his lightning bolts.
15 You roared, Lord, and by the wind from the breath of your nostrils the valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth were uncovered.
16 He reached down his hand from above and grabbed hold of me. He pulled me out of the deep water.
17 He rescued me from my powerful enemies, from those who hated me and who were much stronger than me.
18 They came at me at my worst possible moment, but the Lord supported me.
19 He set me free, he rescued me because he's my friend.
20 The Lord rewarded me because I do what's right; he repaid me because I am innocent.

18 (18-19) They confronted me in the day of my calamity; but the LORD was a stay unto me.
19 (18-20) He brought me forth also into a large place; He delivered me, because He delighted in me.
20 (18-21) The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath He recompensed me.
21 (18-22) For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 (18-23) For all His ordinances were before me, and I put not away His statutes from me.

Psalms 18:5-22 in KJV Cambridge Paragraph Bible

5 The sorrows of hell compassed me about: The snares of death prevented me.
6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried unto my God: He heard my voice out of his temple, And my cry came before him, even into his ears.
7 Then the earth shook and trembled; The foundations also of the hills moved And were shaken, because he was wroth.
8 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, And fire out of his mouth devoured: Coals were kindled by it.
9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down: And darkness was under his feet.
10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: Yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.
11 He made darkness his secret place; His pavilion round about him Were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
12 At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, Hail-stones and coals of fire.
13 The Lord also thundered in the heavens, And the Highest gave his voice; Hail-stones and coals of fire.
14 Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; And he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them.
15 Then the channels of waters were seen, And the foundations of the world were discovered At thy rebuke, O Lord, At the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.
16 He sent from above, he took me, He drew me out of many waters.
17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, And from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.
18 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: But the Lord was my stay.
19 He brought me forth also into a large place; He delivered me, because he delighted in me.
20 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; According to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

Psalms 18:5-22 in Isaac Leeser Tanakh

5 (18:6) The bonds of hell encircled me: the snares of death seized on me.
6 (18:7) When in my distress I called upon the Lord, and unto my God I cried: he heard from his temple my voice, and my complaint came before him, even into his ears.
7 (18:8) Then shook and trembled the earth; and the foundations of the mountains were moved; and they were shaken, because he was wroth.
8 (18:9) Smoke went up in his anger and consuming fire out of his mouth: coals flamed forth from him.
9 (18:10) And he bent the heavens, and came down: and thick darkness was under his feet:
10 (18:11) And he rode upon a cherub, and flew along, and he flitted by upon the wings of the wind.
11 (18:12) He made darkness his hiding-place, round about him as his pavilion, dark waters, thick clouds of the skies.
12 (18:13) From the brightness before him his thick clouds passed away, with hail-stones and coals of fire.
13 (18:14) And the Lord thundered in the heavens, and the Most High uttered forth his voice, with hail-stones and coals of fire.
14 (18:15) And he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot forth lightnings, and discomfited them.
15 (18:16) And then were seen the channels of the waters, and there were laid open the foundations of the world, through thy rebuke, O Lord, through the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.
16 (18:17) He stretched out from above his hand, he took me; he drew me out from mighty waters.
17 (18:18) He delivered me from my enemy, the strong, and from those that hated me, when they were too mighty for me.
18 (18:19) They overcame me on the day of my calamity; but the Lord became my stay.
19 (18:20) And he brought me forth into a large space; he delivered me, because he had delight in me.
20 (18:21) The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the purity of my hands did he recompense me.
21 (18:22) For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
22 (18:23) For all his ordinances were before me, and his statutes had I not put away from me.

Psalms 18:5-22 in Updated Brenton English Septuagint

10 The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever and ever: The judgments of the Lord are true, and justified altogether.
11 To be desired more than gold, and much precious stone: Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

5 The snares of the underworld surrounded me, And the nets of death seized upon me.
6 In my distress I called upon the LORD, And cried unto my God; He heard my voice from his palace, And my cry came before him into his ears.
7 Then the earth quaked and trembled; The foundations of the mountains rocked and were shaken, Because his wrath was kindled.
8 A smoke went up from his nostrils, And fire from his mouth devoured; Burning coals shot forth from him.

10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly; Yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.
11 And he made darkness his covering; His pavilion round about him was dark waters and thick clouds of the skies.
12 At the brightness before him, his thick clouds passed away; Then came hailstones and coals of fire.
13 The LORD also thundered from heaven, And the Most High uttered his voice, Amid hailstones and coals of fire.
14 He sent forth his arrows, and scattered them; Continual lightnings, and discomfited them.
15 Then the channels of the deep were seen, And the foundations of the earth were laid bare At thy rebuke, O LORD! At the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

6 In my tribulation I inwardly called the Lord; and I cried to my God. And he heard my voice from his holy temple; and my cry in his sight entered into his ears.
7 The earth was moved together, and trembled greatly; the foundaments of hills were troubled altogether, and moved together, for he was wroth to them.
8 Smoke went up in the ire or wrath of the Lord, and fire burnt out from his face; coals were kindled of him.
9 He bowed down heavens, and came down; and darkness was under his feet.
10 And he ascended or went on cherubim, and flew; he flew over the pens of winds.
11 And he setted or put darknesses his hiding place, his tabernacle in his compass; and dark water was in the clouds of the air.
12 Full clear clouds passed in his sight; hail and the coals of fire.
13 And the Lord thundered from heaven; and the Highest gave his voice, hail and coals of fire.
14 And he sent his arrows, and destroyed those men; he multiplied lightnings, and troubled those men.
15 And the wells of waters appeared; and the foundaments of the earth were showed. Lord, of thy blaming; of the breathing of the spirit of thine ire.
16 He sent from the highest place, and took me; and he took me from many waters.
17 He delivered me from my strongest enemies; and from them that hated me, for they were comforted on me.
18 They came before me in the day of my torment; and the Lord was made my defender.
19 And he led out me into breadth; he made me safe, for he would me.

5 Cords of Sheol have surrounded me, Before me have been snares of death.
6 In mine adversity I call Jehovah, And unto my God I cry. He heareth from His temple my voice, And My cry before Him cometh into His ears.
7 And shake and tremble doth the earth, And foundations of hills are troubled, And they shake — because He hath wrath.
8 Gone up hath smoke by His nostrils, And fire from His mouth consumeth, Coals have been kindled by it.
9 And He inclineth the heavens, and cometh down, And thick darkness is under His feet.
10 And He rideth on a cherub, and doth fly, And He flieth on wings of wind.
11 He maketh darkness His secret place, Round about Him His tabernacle, Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.
12 From the brightness over-against Him His thick clouds have passed on, Hail and coals of fire.
13 And thunder in the heavens doth Jehovah, And the Most High giveth forth His voice, Hail and coals of fire.
14 And He sendeth His arrows and scattereth them, And much lightning, and crusheth them.
15 And seen are the streams of waters, And revealed are foundations of the earth. From Thy rebuke, O Jehovah, From the breath of the spirit of Thine anger.
16 He sendeth from above — He taketh me, He draweth me out of many waters.
17 He delivereth me from my strong enemy, And from those hating me, For they have been stronger than I.
18 They go before me in a day of my calamity And Jehovah is for a support to me.
19 And He bringeth me forth to a large place, He draweth me out, because He delighted in me.
20 Jehovah doth recompense me According to my righteousness, According to the cleanness of my hands, He doth return to me.
21 For I have kept the ways of Jehovah, And have not done wickedly against my God.
22 For all His judgments are before me, And His statutes I turn not from me.
