Psalms 140:5-9 in English

⁵ The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; They have spread a net by the wayside; They have set gins for me. Selah

⁶ I said unto Jehovah, Thou art my God: Give ear unto the voice of my supplications, O Jehovah.

⁷ O Jehovah the Lord, the strength of my salvation, Thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

⁸ Grant not, O Jehovah, the desires of the wicked; Further not his evil device, lest they exalt themselves. Selah

⁹ As for the head of those that compass me about, Let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

⁵ The righteous shall chasten me with mercy, and reprove me: but let not the oil of the sinner anoint my head: for yet shall my prayer also be in their pleasures.

⁶ Their mighty ones have been swallowed up near the rock: they shall hear my words, for they are sweet.

⁷ As a lump of earth is crushed upon the ground, our bones have been scattered by the mouth of the grave.

⁸ For mine eyes are to thee, O Lord God: I have hoped in thee; take not away my life.

⁹ Keep me from the snare which they have set for me, and from the stumbling-blocks of them that work iniquity.

⁵ It is as though proud people have set a trap for me; it is as though they have spread their nets to catch me; it is as though they have put those things along the road to catch/seize me.

⁶ I say to you, “Yahweh, you are my God;” so listen to me while I cry out to you to help me.

⁷ Yahweh, my Lord, you are the one who defends me strongly; you have protected me during battles MET as though you had put a helmet on my head.

⁸ Yahweh, do allow wicked people to do the things that they desire, and do not allow them to do the evil things that they plan to do.

⁹ Do not allow my enemies to ◄become proud/defeat me►; cause the evil things that they say MTY they will do to me to happen to them, instead.

⁸ O Lord, give not the wrongdoer his desire; give him no help in his evil designs, or he may be uplifted in pride. (Selah.)

⁹ As for those who come round me, let their heads be covered by the evil of their lips.

⁹ As for the head of those that encompass me, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

⁵ The just shall correct me in mercy, and shall reprove me: but let not the oil of the sinner fatten my head. For my prayer also shall still be against the things with which they are well pleased:

⁶ Their judges falling upon the rock have been swallowed up. They shall hear my words, for they have prevailed:

⁷ As when the thickness of the earth is broken up upon the ground: Our bones are scattered by the side of hell.

⁸ But o to thee, O Lord, Lord, are my eyes: in thee have I put my trust, take not away my soul.

⁹ Keep me from the snare, which they have laid for me, and from the stumblingblocks of them that work iniquity.

⁵ Proud people have hidden a trap for me—they have strung out a net on the path, they have set snares to catch me. Selah.

⁶ I told the Lord, “You are my God! Lord, please listen to my cries for help!”

⁷ Lord God, my powerful Savior, you covered my head like a helmet on the day of battle.

⁸ God, don't allow the wicked to get what they want—don't let them be successful in what they plan so they don't become proud. Selah.

⁹ May the harm spoken against me by those who surround me fall back on them,

⁵ The proude haue layde a snare for me, and spred a nette with cordes in my pathway, and set grennes for me. Selah.

⁶ Therefore I saide vnto the Lord, Thou art my God: heare, O Lord, the voyce of my prayers.

⁷ O Lord God the strength of my saluation, thou hast couered mine head in the day of battel.

⁸ Let not the wicked haue his desire, O Lord: performe not his wicked thought, least they be proude. Selah.

⁹ As for the chiefe of them, that compasse me about, let the mischiefe of their owne lippes come vpon them.

⁸ (140:9) Grant not, O Lord, the longings of the wicked; suffer not his wicked device to succeed: lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

⁹ (140:10) As for the heads of those that encompass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

⁶ I have said to the Lord, “My God are you; give ear, Lord, to my loud plea.

⁷ O Lord my Lord, my saviour mighty, you did cover my head in the day of battle.

⁸ Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked; and what they have purposed, promote you not.” Selah

⁹ Let them not lift up their heads against me. May the mischief they prate bring themselves to destruction,

⁸ Lord, betake thou not me from my desire to the sinner; they thought against me, forsake thou not me, lest peradventure they be enhanced.

⁹ The head of the compass of them; the travail of their lips shall cover them.

⁵ proud men hid a snare to me. And they laid forth cords into a snare; they setted (a) trap to me beside the way. (Proud people hid a snare for me, yea, they laid out cords for a snare; they set a trap for me along the way.)

⁶ I said to the Lord, Thou art my God; Lord, hear thou the voice of my beseeching, (or Lord, hear thou the words of my plea).

⁷ Lord, Lord, the virtue of mine health; thou madest shadow on mine head in the day of battle. (Lord, Lord, my strong salvation or my strong deliverance; thou madest a shadow upon my head on the day of battle.)

⁸ Lord, betake thou not me from my desire to the sinner; they thought against me, forsake thou not me, lest peradventure they be enhanced. (Lord, do not thou deliver me unto the desires of the sinners; they have planned to harm me, so abandon thou me not, lest they gain an advantage over me.)

⁹ The head of the compass of them; the travail of their lips shall cover them. (As for the leaders of those who surround me; let the treachery of their own lips ensnare them.)

⁵ The proud hid a snare for me — and cords, They spread a net by the side of the path, Snares they have set for me. Selah.

⁶ I have said to Jehovah, 'My God art Thou, Hear, Jehovah, the voice of my supplications.'

⁷ O Jehovah, my Lord, strength of my salvation, Thou hast covered my head in the day of armour.

⁸ Grant not, O Jehovah, the desires of the wicked, His wicked device bring not forth, They are high. Selah.

⁹ The chief of my surrounders, The perverseness of their lips covereth them.
