Psalms 124:1-5 in English

¹ A Song of Ascents; of David. If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side, Let Israel now say,

² If it had not been Jehovah who was on our side, When men rose up against us;

³ Then they had swallowed us up alive, When their wrath was kindled against us:

⁴ Then the waters had overwhelmed us, The stream had gone over our soul;

⁵ Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

¹ A Song of Degrees. They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Sion: he that dwells in Jerusalem shall never be moved.

² The mountains are round about her, and so the Lord is round about his people, from henceforth and even for ever.

³ For the Lord will not allow the rod of sinners to be upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous should stretch forth their hands to iniquity.

⁴ Do good, O Lord, to them that are good, and to them that are upright in heart.

⁵ But them that turn aside to crooked ways the Lord will lead away with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel.

¹ You Israeli people, answer this question: What would have happened to us if Yahweh had not been ◄helping/fighting for► us?

² When our enemies attacked us, if Yahweh had not been fighting for us,

³ we would have all been killed IDM because they were very angry with us!

⁴ They would have been like MET a flood that swept/carried us away; it would have been as though the water would have covered us,

⁵ and we would all have drowned in the flood that was ◄raging/flowing very fast►.

¹ A Song of the going up. Of David. If it had not been the Lord who was on our side (let Israel now say);

² If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men came up against us;

³ They would have made a meal of us while still living, in the heat of their wrath against us:

⁴ We would have been covered by the waters; the streams would have gone over our soul;

⁵ Yes, the waters of pride would have gone over our soul.

¹ A Song of degrees. Of David. If it had not been Jehovah who was for us — oh let Israel say —

² If it had not been Jehovah who was for us, when men rose up against us,

³ Then they had swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us;

⁴ Then the waters had overwhelmed us, a torrent had gone over our soul;

⁵ Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.

¹ They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Sion: he shall not be moved for ever that dwelleth

² In Jerusalem. Mountains are round about it: so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth now and for ever.

³ For the Lord will not leave the rod of sinners upon the lot of the just: that the just may not stretch forth their hands to iniquity.

⁴ Do good, O Lord, to those that are good, and to the upright of heart.

⁵ But such as turn aside into bonds, the Lord shall lead out with the workers of iniquity: peace upon Israel.

¹ A song for pilgrims going up to Jerusalem. A psalm of David. If the Lord hadn't been for us, what would have happened? Let everyone in Israel say:

² If the Lord hadn't been for us, what would have happened when people came and attacked us?

³ They would have swallowed us alive when their anger raged against us.

⁴ Like a flood they would have swept over us; like a rushing torrent they would have submerged us.

⁵ They would have rushed over us like raging waters, drowning us.

¹ A song of degrees, or Psalme of David. If the Lord had not bene on our side, (may Israel now say)

² If the Lord had not bene on our side, when men rose vp against vs,

³ They had then swallowed vs vp quicke, when their wrath was kindled against vs.

⁴ Then the waters had drowned vs, and the streame had gone ouer our soule:

⁵ Then had the swelling waters gone ouer our soule.

² 'If it had not been the LORD who was for us, when men rose up against us,

³ Then they had swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us;

⁴ Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul;

⁵ Then the proud waters had gone over our soul.'

² If it had not been the Lord who was for us, when men rose up against us:

³ Then would they have swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us;

⁴ Then would the waters have overwhelmed us, the stream would have passed over our soul;

⁵ Then would have passed over our soul the presumptuous waters.

² The mountains are round about her, And so the Lord is round about his people, From henceforth and even forever.

³ For the Lord will not allow the rod of sinners To be upon the lot of the righteous; Lest the righteous should stretch forth Their hands to iniquity.

⁴ Do good, O Lord, to them that are good, And to them that are upright in heart.

⁵ But them that turn aside to crooked ways The Lord will lead away with the workers of iniquity: But peace shall be upon Israel.

¹ “A psalm of the steps, or the goings up. By David.” If the LORD had not been for us, Now may Israel say,

² If the LORD had not been for us, When men rose up against us,

³ Then had they swallowed us up alive, When their wrath burned against us;

⁴ Then the waters had overwhelmed us; The stream had gone over our soul;

⁵ The proud waters had gone over our soul.

¹ A song of ascents. Of David. “Had it not been the Lord who was for us” let Israel say

² “Had it not been the Lord who was for us when enemies rose against us,

³ then alive they'd have swallowed us up, when their anger was kindled against us.

⁴ Then the waters would've swept us away, and the torrent passed over us clean:

⁵ then most sure would've passed over us clean the wild seething waters.”

² “Had it not been the Lord who was for us when enemies rose against us,

³ then alive they'd have swallowed us up, when their anger was kindled against us.

⁴ Then the waters would've swept us away, and the torrent passed over us clean:

⁵ then most sure would've passed over us clean the wild seething waters.”

¹ If it had not been Adonai who was on our side, let Israel God prevails now say,

² if it had not been Adonai who was on our side, when men rose up against us;

³ then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their wrath was kindled against us;

⁴ then the waters would have overwhelmed us, the stream would have gone over our soul;

⁵ then the proud waters would have gone over our soul.

¹ A song of ascents; of David. “If Yahweh had not been on our side,” let Israel say now,

² “if it had not been Yahweh who was on our side when men rose up against us,

³ then they would have swallowed us up alive when their anger raged against us.

⁴ The water would have swept us away; the torrent would have overwhelmed us.

⁵ Then the raging waters would have drowned us.”

³ in hap they had swallowed us quick. When the strong vengeance of them was wroth against us;

⁴ in hap water had swallowed us up. Our soul passed through a strand or stream;

⁵ in hap our soul had passed through a water unsufferable.

¹ The song of degrees of David. Israel say now, No but for the Lord was in us; (A song by David for steps of ascending. Let Israel say now, If the Lord was not with us or If the Lord had not been for us,)

² no but for the Lord was in us. When men rose up against us; (yea, if the Lord was not with us or if the Lord had not been for us; then when men rose up against us,)

³ in hap they had swallowed us quick. When the strong vengeance of them was wroth against us; (they would have swallowed us up alive. Yea, when their fury raged against us;)

⁴ in hap water had swallowed us up. Our soul passed through a strand; (the water would have swallowed us up. When the stream had gone up over our heads;)

⁵ in hap our soul had passed through a water unsufferable. (when the insufferable waters had gone up over our heads.)

¹ A Song of the Ascents, by David. Save for Jehovah — who hath been for us, (Pray, let Israel say),

² Save for Jehovah — who hath been for us, In the rising up of man against us,

³ Then alive they had swallowed us up, In the burning of their anger against us,

⁴ Then the waters had overflowed us, The stream passed over our soul,

⁵ Then passed over our soul had the proud waters.
