Proverbs 22:13-18 in English

¹³ The sluggard saith, There is a lion without; I shall be slain in the streets.

¹⁴ The mouth of strange women is a deep pit; He that is abhorred of Jehovah shall fall therein.

¹⁵ Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; But the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

¹⁶ He that oppresseth the poor to increase his gain, And he that giveth to the rich, shall come only to want.

¹⁷ Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise, And apply thy heart unto my knowledge.

¹⁸ For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee, If they be established together upon thy lips.

¹³ The sluggard makes excuses, and says, There is a lion in the ways, and murderers in the streets.

¹⁴ The mouth of a transgressor is a deep pit; and he that is hated of the Lord shall fall into it.

^14a Evil ways are before a man, and he does not like to turn away from them; but it is needful to turn aside from a perverse and bad way.

¹⁴ What ◄wives who commit adultery/immoral women► say to men MTY is like a deep pit MET into which those men fall; those with whom Yahweh is angry will fall into that pit.

¹⁵ Children SYN naturally do things that are foolish, but if you punish/spank them PRS, they will ◄stop doing foolish things/learn to behave as they should►.

¹⁶ Those who oppress poor people in order to become rich, and those who give a bribe to rich people in order that the rich people will do a favor for them, will just lose their money.

¹⁷ Now listen MTY to what wise people have said; think carefully about what I am teaching you.

¹⁸ It will be good to ◄keep these things in your minds/always remember them►, because if you do that, you will be able to quote/recite them to others.

¹⁴ The seductive words of an immoral woman are a dangerous trap—if the Lord's angry with you, then you'll fall right in.

¹⁵ Children are naturally foolish; physical correction helps them to see sense.

¹⁶ If you oppress the poor to make yourself rich, or if you're generous to the rich, you'll end up poor yourself.

¹⁷ Pay attention and listen to the words of the wise, and think carefully about my teachings—

¹⁸ for it's good to keep them in mind so you can be ready to share them.

¹⁴ The mouth of an alien woman is a deep ditch; he to whom the Lord is wroth shall fall into it. (The mouth of a woman with whom thou hast been intimate, but who is not thy wife, is a deep ditch; he to whom the Lord is angry with, shall fall into it.)

¹⁵ Folly is bound together in the heart of a child; and a rod of chastising shall drive it away. (Foolishness is bound up in a child’s heart, but the rod of discipline shall drive it away.)

¹⁶ He that falsely challengeth a poor man, to increase his own riches, (or He who oppresseth the poor, to increase his own riches), shall give to a richer man, and he shall be needy.

¹⁷ My son, bow down thine ear, and hear thou the words of wise men; but set thou the heart to my teaching. (My son, bow down thy ear, and listen thou to the words of the wise; yea, set thou thy heart unto my teaching, or my instruction.)

¹⁸ That shall be fair to thee, when thou hast kept it in thine heart, and it shall flow again in thy lips. (It shall please thee when thou hast kept it in thy heart, and it shall flow freely from thy lips.)

¹⁵ Folly is bound up in the heart of a youth, The rod of chastisement putteth it far from him.

¹⁶ He is oppressing the poor to multiply to him, He is giving to the rich — only to want.

¹⁷ Incline thine ear, and hear words of the wise, And thy heart set to my knowledge,

¹⁸ For they are pleasant when thou dost keep them in thy heart, They are prepared together for thy lips.
