Proverbs 20:1-21 in American Standard Version (1901)

1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise.
2 The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: He that provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own life.
3 It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife; But every fool will be quarrelling.
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; Therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.
5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; But a man of understanding will draw it out.
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; But a faithful man who can find?
7 A righteous man that walketh in his integrity, Blessed are his children after him.
8 A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment Scattereth away all evil with his eyes.
9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?
10 Diverse weights, and diverse measures, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.
11 Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, Whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them.
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; Open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
14 It is bad, it is bad, saith the buyer; But when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
15 There is gold, and abundance of rubies; But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.
16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; And hold him in pledge that is surety for foreigners.
17 Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; But afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
18 Every purpose is established by counsel; And by wise guidance make thou war.
19 He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; Therefore company not with him that openeth wide his lips.
20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, His lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.
21 An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; But the end thereof shall not be blessed.
Proverbs 20 in American Standard Version (1901)

Proverbs 20:1-21 in Brenton Septuagint Translation

1 Wine is an intemperate thing, and strong drink full of violence: but every fool is entangled with them.
2 The threat of a king differs not from the rage of a lion; and he that provokes him sins against his own soul.
3 It is a glory to a man to turn aside from railing; but every fool is entangled with such matters.
4 A sluggard when reproached is not ashamed: so also he who borrows corn in harvest.
5 Counsel in a man's heart is deep water; but a prudent man will draw it out.
6 A man is valuable, and a merciful man precious: but it is hard to find a faithful man.
7 He that walks blameless in justice, shall leave his children blessed.
8 Whenever a righteous king sits on the throne, no evil thing can stand before his presence.
9 Who will boast that he has a pure heart? or who will boldly say that he is pure from sins?
9a The lamp of him that reviles father or mother shall be put out, and his eyeballs shall see darkness.
9b A portion hastily gotten at first shall not be blessed in the end.
9c Say not, I will avenge myself on my enemy; but wait on the Lord, that he may help thee.
10 A large and small weight, and divers measures, are even both of them unclean before the Lord; and so is he that makes them.
11 A youth when in company with a godly man, will be restrained in his devices, and then his way will be straight.
12 The ear hears, and the eye sees: even both of them are the Lord's work.
13 Love not to speak ill, lest thou be cut off: open thine eyes, and be filled with bread.

Proverbs 20:1-21 in Translation for Translators

1 Drinking a lot of wine or other strong drinks causes people to start fighting; it is foolish to become drunk/intoxicated.
2 Being afraid of a king when he is angry is like SIM being afraid of a lion when it growls/roars; if you cause the king to become angry, he may execute you.
3 People respect those who stay away from disputes/arguments; foolish people love to quarrel.
4 If a lazy man does not plow his fields at the right/proper time, he will look for crops at harvest time, but there will be nothing there.
5 Just as it is difficult to bring up water from a deep well, it is difficult to know what people are thinking, but someone who has good sense/insight will be able to find out what people are thinking.
6 Many people proclaim that they can be trusted to do what they say that they will do, but it is very difficult to find RHQ someone who can really be trusted.
7 If parents conduct their lives as they should, God blesses their children (OR, their children are very happy/fortunate).
8 A king who sits on his throne to judge people can easily MTY find out what things that people have done are good and what things are evil.
9 There is no one RHQ who can truthfully say, “I do not know of any wrong things that I have done; I have ◄gotten rid of all my sinful behavior/quit doing what is sinful►.”
10 Yahweh detests people who use weights that are not right and measures that are not correct.
11 Even children show by what they do whether they are good or not; they show whether ◄what they do/their behavior► is honest and right or not.
12 Two of the things that Yahweh has created for us are ears to hear things and eyes to see things.
13 If you want to sleep all the time, you will become poor; if you stay awake and work, you will have plenty of food.
14 People look at things that they are about to buy, and in order to get it for a lower price sometimes they say, “◄It is no good/It is poor quality►,” but after they buy it, they go and boast about having bought it for a cheap price.
15 Gold and precious stones are valuable, but wise words MTY are more valuable.
16 If you foolishly promise to a stranger that you will pay what he owes if he is unable to pay it DOU, you deserve to have someone take your coat from you.
17 People may think that food that they acquire by doing what is dishonest will taste very good, but later they will not enjoy what they have done any more than they would enjoy eating gravel/sand.
18 When people give you good advice, if you do what they suggest, your plans will succeed; so be sure to get good advice from wise people before you start fighting a war.
19 Those who go around telling gossip are always telling secrets to others; so stay away from people who foolishly talk too much.
20 If someone curses his father or his mother, his life will be ended, just like a lamp is extinguished.
21 If you very quickly take the property that your parents promise will be yours after they die, you will not receive any good/blessing from it.

Proverbs 20:1-21 in Bible in Basic English

1 Wine makes men foolish, and strong drink makes men come to blows; and whoever comes into error through these is not wise.
2 The wrath of a king is like the loud cry of a lion: he who makes him angry does wrong against himself.
3 It is an honour for a man to keep from fighting, but the foolish are ever at war.
4 The hater of work will not do his ploughing because of the winter; so at the time of grain-cutting he will be requesting food and will get nothing.
5 The purpose in the heart of a man is like deep water, but a man of good sense will get it out.
6 Most men make no secret of their kind acts: but where is a man of good faith to be seen?
7 An upright man goes on in his righteousness: happy are his children after him!
8 A king on the seat of judging puts to flight all evil with his eyes.
9 Who is able to say, I have made my heart clean, I am free from my sin?
10 Unequal weights and unequal measures, they are all disgusting to the Lord.
11 Even a child may be judged by his doings, if his work is free from sin and if it is right.
12 The hearing ear and the seeing eye are equally the Lord's work.
13 Do not be a lover of sleep, or you will become poor: keep your eyes open, and you will have bread enough.
14 A poor thing, a poor thing, says he who is giving money for goods: but when he has gone on his way, then he makes clear his pride in what he has got.
15 There is gold and a store of corals: but the lips of knowledge are a jewel of great price.
16 Take a man's clothing if he makes himself responsible for a strange man, and get an undertaking from him who gives his word for strange men.
17 Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but after, his mouth will be full of sand.
18 Every purpose is put into effect by wise help: and by wise guiding make war.
19 He who goes about talking of the business of others gives away secrets: so have nothing to do with him whose lips are open wide.
20 If anyone puts a curse on his father or his mother, his light will be put out in the blackest night.
21 A heritage may be got quickly at first, but the end of it will not be a blessing.

4 The sluggard will not plough by reason of the winter; he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Proverbs 20 in Darby Translation

Proverbs 20:1-21 in Douay-Rheims 1899

1 Wine is a luxurious thing, and drunkenness riotous: whosoever is delighted therewith shell not be wise.
2 As the roaring of a lion, so also is the dread of a king: he that provoketh him, sinneth against his own soul.
3 It is an honour for a man to separate himself from quarrels: but all fools are meddling with reproaches.
4 Because of the cold the sluggard would not plough: he shall beg therefore in the summer, and it shall not be given him.
5 Counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water: but a wise man will draw it out.
6 Many men are called merciful: but who shall find a faithful man?
7 The just that walketh in his simplicity, shall leave behind him blessed children.
8 The king, that sitteth on the throne of judgment, scattereth away all evil with his look.
9 Who can say: My heart is clean, I am pure from sin?
10 Diverse weights and diverse measures, both are abominable before God.
11 By his inclinations a child is known, if his works be clean and right.
12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the Lord hath made them both.
13 Love not sleep, lest poverty oppress thee: open thy eyes, and be filled with bread.
14 It is nought, it is nought, saith every buyer: and when he is gone away, then he will boast.
15 There is gold, and a multitude of jewels: but the lips of knowledge are a precious vessel.
16 Take away the garment of him that is surety for a stranger, and take a pledge from him for strangers.
17 The bread of lying is sweet to a man: but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
18 Designs are strengthened by counsels: and wars are to be managed by governments.
19 Meddle not with him that revealeth secrets, and walketh deceitfully, and openeth wide his lips.
20 He that curseth his father, and mother, his lamp shall be put out in the midst of darkness.
21 The inheritance gotten hastily in the beginning, in the end shall be without a blessing.

Proverbs 20:1-21 in Free Bible Version

1 Wine turns you into a mocker, alcohol makes you aggressive; you're stupid to be deceived by drink.
2 When a king gets terribly angry, he sounds like a roaring lion; anyone who makes him furious is liable to be killed.
3 Avoiding conflict is the proper thing to do, but stupid people are quick to argue.
4 Slackers don't sow when they should, so when harvest comes they don't have anything.
5 Discovering what someone is planning in their mind is like looking at deep water, but a person who has understanding will find out.
6 Many people tell you they're loyal, but can you find someone really trustworthy?
7 Good people live honestly; how happy are their children if they follow them.
8 When a king sits in judgment he recognizes all that isn't right.
9 Who can claim, “I've made sure my conscience is clean; I've purified myself from sin”?
10 The Lord hates both dishonest weights and dishonest measures.
11 Even children reveal what they're like by what they do, whether their actions are good and right.
12 The Lord made our ears to hear and our eyes to see.
13 If you love sleeping you'll become poor. Wake up and get busy, and you'll have plenty to eat.
14 “It's really rubbish,” says the one buying, but afterwards goes and boasts to others about making a good deal.
15 There's gold and plenty of expensive gemstones, but talking sense is a more valuable jewel.
16 If someone guarantees a stranger's debt with their cloak, be sure to take it! Make sure you have whatever is pledged to foreigners!
17 Food you get by cheating may taste sweet, but afterwards it will be like a mouthful of gravel.
18 With sound advice, plans are successful; if you're going to war, make sure you have good guidance.
19 A gossip goes around revealing secrets; stay away from people who talk a lot.
20 Anyone who curses their father or mother will have their light put out and end in utter darkness.
21 Wealth gained too soon won't do you any good in the end.

1 Wine is a mocker and strong drinke is raging: and whosoeuer is deceiued thereby, is not wise.
2 The feare of the King is like the roaring of a lyon: hee that prouoketh him vnto anger, sinneth against his owne soule.
3 It is a mans honour to cease from strife: but euery foole will be medling.
4 The slouthfull will not plowe, because of winter: therefore shall he beg in sommer, but haue nothing.
5 The counsell in the heart of man is like deepe waters: but a man that hath vnderstanding, will drawe it out.
6 Many men wil boast, euery one of his owne goodnes: but who can finde a faithfull man?
7 He that walketh in his integritie, is iust: and blessed shall his children be after him.
8 A King that sitteth in the throne of iudgement, chaseth away all euill with his eyes.
9 Who can say, I haue made mine heart cleane, I am cleane from my sinne?
10 Diuers weightes, and diuers measures, both these are euen abomination vnto the Lord.
11 A childe also is knowen by his doings, whether his worke be pure and right.
12 The Lord hath made both these, euen the eare to heare, and the eye to see.
13 Loue not sleepe least thou come vnto pouertie: open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
14 It is naught, it is naught, sayth the buyer: but when he is gone apart, he boasteth.
15 There is golde, and a multitude of precious stones: but the lips of knowledge are a precious iewel.
16 Take his garment, that is suretie for a stranger, and a pledge of him for the stranger.
17 The bread of deceit is sweete to a man: but afterward his mouth shalbe filled with grauel.
18 Establish the thoughtes by counsell: and by counsell make warre.
19 He that goeth about as a slanderer, discouereth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.
20 He that curseth his father or his mother, his light shalbe put out in obscure darkenes.
21 An heritage is hastely gotten at the beginning, but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

Proverbs 20:1-21 in Wycliffe's Bible with Modern Spelling

1 Wine is a lecherous thing, and drunkenness is full of noise; whoever delighteth in these, shall not be wise.
2 As the roaring of a lion, so and the dread of a king; he that stirreth him to ire, sinneth against his soul.
3 It is honour to a man that separateth himself from strivings; but fond men be meddled or fools shall be mingled with despisings.
4 A slow man would not ear for cold; therefore he shall beg in summer, and men shall not give to him.
5 As deep water, so counsel is in the heart of a man; but a wise man shall draw it out.
6 Many men be called merciful; but who shall find a faithful man?
7 Forsooth a just or rightwise man that goeth in his simpleness, shall leave blessed sons after him.
8 A king that sitteth in the seat of doom, destroyeth all evil by his looking.
9 Who may say, Mine heart is clean; I am clean of sin?
10 A weight, greater in buying, and a weight, lesser in selling, a measure and a measure, ever either is abominable at God.
11 A child is understood by his studies, if his works be rightful or right and clean.
12 An ear hearing, and an eye seeing, or The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, God made ever either.
13 Do not thou love sleep, lest needi-ness oppress thee; open thine eyes, and be thou ful filled with loaves.
14 Each buyer saith, It is evil, it is evil; and when he hath gone away, then he shall have glory.
15 Gold, and the multitude of gems, and a precious vessel, be the lips of knowing.
16 Take thou away the cloth of him that was a borrow of another man; and for strangers take thou away a wed from him.
17 The bread of a leasing, that is, gotten by a leasing, is sweet to a man; and afterward his mouth shall be filled with reckoning or with little pebble stones.
18 Thoughts be made strong by counsels; and battles shall be treated by governances.
19 Be thou not meddled or mingled with him that showeth privates, and goeth guilefully, and alargeth his lips.
20 The light of him that curseth his father and mother, shall be quenched in the midst of darknesses.
21 Heritage to which men hasteth in the beginning, shall want blessing in the last time.
