Proverbs 30:1-8 in English

¹ The words of Agur the son of Jakeh; the oracle. The man saith unto Ithiel, unto Ithiel and Ucal:

² Surely I am more brutish than any man, And have not the understanding of a man;

³ And I have not learned wisdom, Neither have I the knowledge of the Holy One.

⁴ Who hath ascended up into heaven, and descended? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound the waters in his garment? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou knowest?

⁵ Every word of God is tried: He is a shield unto them that take refuge in him.

⁶ Add thou not unto his words, Lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

⁷ Two things have I asked of thee; Deny me them not before I die:

⁸ Remove far from me falsehood and lies; Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is needful for me:

⁵ For all the words of God are tried in the fire, and he defends those that reverence him.

⁶ Add not to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be made a liar.

⁷ Two things I ask of you; take not favor from me before I die.

⁸ Remove far from me vanity and falsehood: and give me not wealth or poverty; but appoint me what is needful and sufficient:

¹ These are sayings/messages that God gave to Agur, the son of Jakeh. Agur wrote them for Ithiel and Ucal.

² It seems that I am very stupid; I do not deserve to be considered to be a human; I do not have the good sense that humans should have.

³ I have not learned how to become wise and I do not know much about God.

⁴ But let me say this: No one RHQ has ascended to heaven to find out what God is like and returned to tell us. No one RHQ has gathered/held the wind in his hand. No one RHQ has wrapped the water in the ocean in a piece of cloth, and no one RHQ has established the boundaries of the earth. If you know who has done those things, tell me RHQ his name, and the names of his children SAR! But you do not know who has done those things, so you cannot speak with authority about what God is like.

⁵ Everything that God has said is true; he is like a shield MET for all those who request him to protect them.

⁶ Do not add to (OR, change) what God has said; if you do that, he will rebuke you and show that you are lying.

⁷ God, I ask you to do two things for me; please do them before I die:

⁸ Help me never to lie or deceive people and do not cause me to become poor or to become rich. Just give me the food that I need;

¹ These things says the man to them that trust in God; and I cease.

² For I am more like a beast than any man, I have no power of reasoning like a man:

³ I have not got wisdom by teaching, so that I might have the knowledge of the Holy One.

⁴ Who has gone up to heaven and come down? who has taken the winds in his hands, prisoning the waters in his robe? by whom have all the ends of the earth been fixed? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if you are able to say?

⁵ Every word of God is tested: he is a breastplate to those who put their faith in him.

⁶ Make no addition to his words, or he will make clear your error, and you will be seen to be false.

⁷ I have made request to you for two things; do not keep them from me before my death:

⁸ Put far from me all false and foolish things: do not give me great wealth or let me be in need, but give me only enough food:

² Truly I am more stupid than any one; and I have not a man's intelligence.

³ I have neither learned wisdom, nor have I the knowledge of the Holy.

⁴ Who hath ascended up into the heavens, and descended? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound the waters in a mantle? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou knowest?

⁵ Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

⁶ Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

⁷ Two things do I ask of thee; deny me them not before I die:

⁸ Remove far from me vanity and lies; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the bread of my daily need:

¹ The words of Gatherer the son of Vomiter. The vision which the man spoke with whom God is, and who being strengthened by God, abiding with him, said:

² I am the most foolish of men, and the wisdom of men is not with me.

³ I have not learned wisdom, and have not known the science of saints.

⁴ Who hath ascended up into heaven, and descended? who hath held the wind in his hands? who hath bound up the waters together as in a garment? who hath raised up all the borders of the earth? what is his name, and what is the name of his son, if thou knowest?

⁵ Every word of God is fire tried: he is a buckler to them that hope in him.

⁶ Add not any thing to his words, lest thou be reproved, and found a liar:

⁷ Two things I have asked of thee, deny them not to me before I die.

⁸ Remove far from me vanity, and lying words. Give me neither beggary, nor riches: give me only the necessaries of life:

¹ These are the words of Agur, son of Jakeh. An oracle. This is what the man says, God, I'm really tired, I'm worn out.

² I'm so stupid I'm not really a man; I can't even think like a human being.

³ I have not learned wisdom; I have no knowledge of the Holy One.

⁴ Who has gone up to heaven, and come down? Who holds the winds in the palm of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has set the earth's boundaries? What is his name, and what is his son's name? Are you sure you don't know?

⁵ Every word God says has been proved true. He defends everyone who comes to him for protection.

⁶ Don't add anything to his words, or he will criticize you and you'll be shown to be a liar.

⁷ God, I want to request two things from you. Please don't refuse to let me have them before I come to die.

⁸ Keep me from being false, help me not to tell lies. Don't make me poor or rich; just provide me with the food I need.

² Surely I am more foolish then any man, and haue not the vnderstanding of a man in me.

⁷ Two things haue I required of thee: denie me them not before I die.

⁸ Remooue farre from me vanitie and lyes: giue me not pouertie, nor riches: feede me with foode conuenient for me,

⁶ Do not add aught unto his words: lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.

⁷ Two things do I request of thee: deny them not to me before I die.

⁸ Vanity and lying words do thou remove far from me: neither poverty nor riches give thou unto me; let me eat the bread appointed unto me:

¹ The words of Agur, the son of Jakeh, even his prophecy; the inspired utterance of the man to Ithiel, even to Ithiel and Ucal.

² Surely I am more like an animal than any human and I do not have the understanding of a human being.

³ I have not learned wisdom, nor do I have knowledge of the Holy One.

⁴ Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has gathered up the waters in a cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is the name of his son? Surely you know!

⁵ Every word of God is tested; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

⁶ Do not add to his words, or he will discipline you, and you will be proved to be a liar.

⁷ Two things I ask of you, do not withhold them from me before I die:

⁸ Put vanity and lies far away from me. Give me neither poverty nor riches, just give me the food I need.

² I am the most foolish of men; and the wisdom of men is not with me.

³ I learned not wisdom; and I knew not the knowing of holy men.

⁴ Who ascended or went up into heaven, and came down? Who held together the spirit or wind in his hands? who bound together waters as in a cloth? Who raised up all the ends of the earth? What is the name of him? and what is the name of his son, if thou knowest?

⁵ Each word of God is a shield set afire, to all that hope in him.

⁶ Add thou not anything to the words of him, and thou be reproved, and be found a liar.

⁷ I prayed thee for two things; deny not thou them to me, before that I die.

⁸ Make thou far from me vanity and words of leasing; give thou not to me begging and riches; but give thou only necessaries to my lifelode;

¹ The words of him that gathereth, of the son spewing. The prophecy which a man spake, with whom God was, and which man was comforted by God dwelling with him, and said, (The words of Agur, the son of Jakeh. The prophecy which a man spoke unto Ithiel, yea, unto Ithiel and Ucal,)

² I am the most fool of men; and the wisdom of men is not with me. (I am the most foolish of men; and I have no common sense.)

³ I learned not wisdom; and I knew not the knowing of holy men.

⁴ Who ascended into heaven, and came down (again)? Who held together the spirit in his hands? who bound together waters as in a cloth? (or Who held together the wind in his hands? who bound up the waters in a cloak?) Who raised (up) all the ends of the earth? What is the name of him? and what is the name of his son, if thou knowest?

⁵ Each word of God is a shield set afire, to all that hope in him. (Each word of God is fired, and he is a shield for all who hope in him.)

⁶ Add thou not anything to the words of him, and thou be reproved, and be found a liar. (Do not thou add anything to his words, lest thou be rebuked, and be found a liar.)

⁷ I prayed (of) thee two things; deny not thou them to me, before that I die.

⁸ Make thou far from me vanity and words of leasing; give thou not to me begging and riches; but give thou only necessaries to my lifelode; (Make thou far from me emptiness and futility, or uselessness, and words of lying, or lies; give thou not to me begging or riches; but give thou only the necessities for my sustenance;)

¹ Words of a Gatherer, son of an obedient one, the declaration, an affirmation of the man: — I have wearied myself for God, I have wearied myself for God, and am consumed.

² For I am more brutish than any one, And have not the understanding of a man.

³ Nor have I learned wisdom, Yet the knowledge of Holy Ones I know.

⁴ Who went up to heaven, and cometh down? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound waters in a garment? Who established all ends of the earth? What is His name? and what His son's name? Surely thou knowest!
