Proverbs 1:1-5 in English

¹ The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

² To know wisdom and instruction; To discern the words of understanding;

³ To receive instruction in wise dealing, In righteousness and justice and equity;

⁴ To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion:

⁵ That the wise man may hear, and increase in learning; And that the man of understanding may attain unto sound counsels:

³ to receive also hard sayings, and to understand true justice, and how to direct judgment;

⁵ For by the hearing of these a wise man will be wiser, and the man of understanding will gain direction;

² These proverbs are to teach wisdom and instruction, to teach words of insight,

³ that you may receive instruction in order to live by doing what is right, just, and fair.

⁴ These proverbs are also to give wisdom to the naive, and to give knowledge and discretion to young people.

⁵ Let wise people listen and increase their learning, and let discerning people get guidance,

⁵ A wise man hearing shall be the wiser; and a man understanding shall hold governance.

² to know wisdom and knowing (or to know wisdom and knowledge); to understand the words of prudence;

³ and to take the learning of teaching; to take rightfulness, and doom, and equity; (and to receive learning from teaching, or from instruction; to gain righteousness, and judgement, or justice, and fairness;)

⁴ that fellness, or wariness, be given to little children, and knowing and understanding to a young waxing man. (so that cleverness, and caution, be given to people of little wit, or of low intelligence, and knowledge and understanding to a young growing man.)

⁵ A wise man hearing shall be the wiser; and a man (of) understanding shall hold governance. (A wise person listening shall become wiser; and a person understanding shall gain skills, or abilities.)

¹ Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:

² For knowing wisdom and instruction, For understanding sayings of intelligence,

³ For receiving the instruction of wisdom, Righteousness, judgment, and uprightness,

⁴ For giving to simple ones — prudence, To a youth — knowledge and discretion.

⁵ (The wise doth hear and increaseth learning, And the intelligent doth obtain counsels.)
