³ namely, the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath.

⁴ And they were left, to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

⁶ and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.

⁷ And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah, and forgat Jehovah their God, and served the Baalim and the Asheroth.

⁸ Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia: and the children of Israel served Cushan-rishathaim eight years.

⁹ And when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised up a saviour to the children of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

¹⁰ And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war, and Jehovah delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand: and his hand prevailed against Cushan-rishathaim.

¹¹ And the land had rest forty years. And Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

¹² And the children of Israel again did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah: and Jehovah strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah.

¹³ And he gathered unto him the children of Ammon and Amalek; and he went and smote Israel, and they possessed the city of palm-trees.

¹⁴ And the children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

¹⁵ But when the children of Israel cried unto Jehovah, Jehovah raised them up a saviour, Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a man left-handed. And the children of Israel sent tribute by him unto Eglon the king of Moab.

¹⁶ And Ehud made him a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right thigh.

¹⁷ And he offered the tribute unto Eglon king of Moab: now Eglon was a very fat man.

¹⁸ And when he had made an end of offering the tribute, he sent away the people that bare the tribute.

¹⁹ But he himself turned back from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret errand unto thee, O king. And he said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

²⁰ And Ehud came unto him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. And Ehud said, I have a message from God unto thee. And he arose out of his seat.

²¹ And Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body:

²² and the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade, for he drew not the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.

²³ Then Ehud went forth into the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room upon him, and locked them.

²⁴ Now when he was gone out, his servants came; and they saw, and, behold, the doors of the upper room were locked; and they said, Surely he is covering his feet in the upper chamber.

²⁵ And they tarried till they were ashamed; and, behold, he opened not the doors of the upper room: therefore they took the key, and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

²⁶ And Ehud escaped while they tarried, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Seirah.

²⁷ And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them.

²⁸ And he said unto them, Follow after me; for Jehovah hath delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and suffered not a man to pass over.

²⁹ And they smote of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, every lusty man, and every man of valor; and there escaped not a man.

³⁰ So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.

³¹ And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who smote of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox-goad: and he also saved Israel.

⁴ And this was done in order to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commands of the Lord, which he charged their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt in the midst of the Chananite, and the Chettite, and the Amorite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite.

⁶ And they took their daughters for wives to themselves, and they gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

⁷ And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgot the Lord their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

⁸ And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and sold them into the hand of Chusarsathaim king of Syria of the rivers: and the children of Israel served Chusarsathaim eight years.

⁹ And the children of Israel cried to the Lord; and the Lord raised up a saviour to Israel, and he saved them, Gothoniel the son of Kenez, the brother of Chaleb younger than himself.

¹⁰ And the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel; and he went out to war against Chusarsathaim: and the Lord delivered into his hand Chusarsathaim king of Syria of the rivers, and his hand prevailed against Chusarsathaim.

¹¹ And the land was quiet forty years; and Gothoniel the son of Kenez died.

¹² And the children of Israel continued to do evil before the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglom king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil before the Lord.

¹³ And he gathered to himself all the children of Ammon and Amalec, and went and smote Israel, and took possession of the city of Palm-trees.

¹⁴ And the children of Israel served Eglom the king of Moab eighteen years.

¹⁵ And the children of Israel cried to the Lord; and he raised up to them a saviour, Aod the son of Gera a son of Jemeni, a man who used both hands alike: and the children of Israel sent gifts by his hand to Eglom king of Moab.

¹⁶ And Aod made himself a dagger of two edges, of a span long, and he girded it under his cloak upon his right thigh.

¹⁷ And he went, and brought the presents to Eglom king of Moab, and Eglom was a very handsome man.

¹⁸ And it came to pass when Aod had made an end of offering his gifts, that he dismissed those that brought the gifts.

¹⁹ And he himself returned from the quarries that are by Galgal; and Aod said, I have a secret errand to thee, O king! and Eglom said to him, Be silent: and he sent away from his presence all who waited upon him.

²⁰ And Aod went in to him; and he sat in his own upper summer chamber quite alone; and Aod said, I have a message from God to thee, O king: and Eglom rose up from his throne near him.

²¹ And it came to pass as he arose, that Aod stretched forth his left hand, and took the dagger off his right thigh, and plunged it into his belly;

²² and drove in also the haft after the blade, and the fat closed in upon the blade, for he drew not out the dagger from his belly.

²³ And Aod went out to the porch, and passed out by the appointed guards, and shut the doors of the chamber upon him, and locked them.

²⁴ And he went out: and Eglom's servants came, and saw, and behold, the doors of the upper chamber were locked; and they said, Does he not uncover his feet in the summer-chamber?

²⁵ And they waited till they were ashamed, and, behold, there was no one that opened the doors of the upper chamber; and they took the key, and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead upon the earth.

²⁶ And Aod escaped while they were in a tumult, and no one paid attention to him; and he passed the quarries, and escaped to Setirotha.

²⁷ And it came to pass when Aod came into the land of Israel, that he blew the horn in mount Ephraim, and the children of Israel came down with him from the mountain, and he was before them.

²⁸ And he said to them, Come down after me, for the Lord God has delivered our enemies, even Moab, into our hand; and they went down after him, and seized on the fords of Jordan before Moab, and he did not suffer a man to pass over.

²⁹ And they smote Moab on that day about ten thousand men, every lusty person and every mighty man; and not a man escaped.

³⁰ So Moab was humbled in that day under the hand of Israel, and the land had rest eighty years; and Aod judged them till he died.

³¹ And after him rose up Samegar the son of Dinach, and smote the Philistines to the number of six hundred men with a ploughshare such as is drawn by oxen; and he too delivered Israel.

³ This is a list of the people-groups that Yahweh left there: The Philistines and their five leaders, the people living in the area near Sidon city, the descendants of Canaan, and the descendants of Hiv who were living in the mountains of Lebanon between Baal-Hermon Mountain and Lebo-Hamath.

⁴ Yahweh left these people-groups there to test the Israelis, to see if they would obey his commands which he had told Moses to give them.

⁵ The Israelis lived among the Canaan people-group, the Hiv people-group, the Amor people-group, the Periz people-group, the Hiv people-group, and the Jebus people-group.

⁶ Moses had told the people not to associate with any of those people. But the Israelis took daughters of people from those people-groups to be their own wives, and gave their own daughters to men of those groups, to marry them. And as a result they started to worship the gods of those people-groups.

⁷ The Israelis did things that Yahweh said were very evil. They forgot about Yahweh, their God, and they started to worship the idols that represented the god Baal and the goddess Asherah.

⁸ Yahweh became very angry with the Israelis. So he allowed king Cushan from Mesopotamia to conquer them and rule them for eight years.

⁹ But when they pleaded to Yahweh to help them, he gave them a leader to rescue them. He was Othniel, the son of Caleb's younger brother Kenaz.

¹⁰ Yahweh's Spirit came upon him, and he became their leader. He led an army that fought against the army of Cushan, and defeated them.

¹¹ After that, there was peace in the land for forty years, until Othniel died.

¹² After that, the Israelis again did things that Yahweh said were very evil. As a result, he allowed the army of King Eglon, who ruled the Moab area, to defeat the Israelis.

¹³ Eglon persuaded the leaders of the Ammon and Amalek people-groups to join their armies with his army to attack Israel. They captured Jericho, which was called ❛The City of Palm Trees❜.

¹⁴ Then King Eglon ruled the Israelis for eighteen years.

¹⁵ But then the Israelis again pleaded to Yahweh to help them. So he gave them another leader to rescue them. He was Ehud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera, from the descendants of Benjamin. The Israelis sent him to King Eglon to give him their yearly protection money.

¹⁶ Ehud had with him a double-edged dagger, about a foot and a half long. He strapped it to his right thigh, under his clothes.

¹⁷ He gave the money to King Eglon, who was a very fat man.

¹⁸ Then Ehud started to go back home with the men who had carried the money.

¹⁹ When they arrived at the stone carvings near Gilgal, he told the other men to go on, but he himself turned around and went back to the king of Moab. When he arrived at the palace, he said to the king, “Your majesty, I have a secret message for you.” So the king told all his servants to be quiet, and sent them out of the room.

²⁰ Then, as Eglon was sitting alone in the upstairs room of his summer palace, Ehud came close to him and said, “I have a message for you from God.” As the king got up from his chair,

²¹ Ehud reached with his left hand and pulled the dagger from his right thigh, and plunged it into the king's belly.

²² He thrust it in so far that the handle went into the king's belly, and the blade came out the king's back. Ehud did not pull the dagger out. He left it there, with the handle buried in the king's fat.

²³ Then Ehud left the room. He went out to the porch. He shut the doors to the room and locked them.

²⁴ After he had gone, King Eglon's servants came back, but they saw that the doors of the room were locked. They said, “The king must be defecating in the inner room.”

²⁵ So they waited, but when the king did not open the doors of the room, after a while they were worried. They got a key and unlocked the doors. And they saw that their king was lying on the floor, dead.

²⁶ Meanwhile, Ehud escaped. He passed by the stone carvings and arrived at Seirah, in the hilly area where the descendants of Ephraim lived.

²⁷ There he blew a trumpet to signal that the people should join him to fight the people of Moab. So the Israelis went with him from the hills. They went down toward the Jordan river, with Ehud leading them.

²⁸ He said to the men, “Yahweh is going to allow us to defeat your enemies, the people of Moab. So follow me!” So they followed him down to the river, and they stationed some of their men at the place where people can walk across the river, in order that they could kill any people from Moab who tried to cross the river to escape.

²⁹ At that time, the Israelis killed about ten thousand people from Moab. They were all strong and capable men, but not one of them escaped.

³⁰ On that day, the Israelis conquered the people of Moab. Then there was peace in their land for eighty years.

³¹ After Ehud died, Shamgar became their leader. He rescued the Israelis from the Philistines. In one battle he killed six hundred Philistines with an ◄ox goad/sharp wooden pole►.

³ The five lordships of the Phylistines, and every Chananite, and the Sidonian, and the Evite who lived in Libanus from the mount of Aermon to Laboemath.

⁴ And this was done in order to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commands of the Lord, which he charged their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ And the children of Israel lived in the midst of the Chananite, and the Chettite, and the Amorite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite.

¹⁶ And Aod made himself a dagger of two edges, of a span long, and he girded it under his cloak upon his right thigh.

¹⁷ And he went, and brought the presents to Eglom king of Moab, and Eglom was a very handsome man.

¹⁸ And it came to pass when Aod had made an end of offering his gifts, that he dismissed those that brought the gifts.

¹⁹ And he himself returned from the quarries that are by Galgal; and Aod said, I have a secret errand to you, O king! and Eglom said to him, Be silent: and he sent away from his presence all who waited upon him.

²⁰ And Aod went in to him; and he sat in his own upper summer chamber quite alone; and Aod said, I have a message from God to you, O king: and Eglom rose up from his throne near him.

²¹ And it came to pass as he arose, that Aod stretched forth his left hand, and took the dagger off his right thigh, and plunged it into his belly;

²² and drove in also the haft after the blade, and the fat closed in upon the blade, for he drew not out the dagger from his belly.

²³ And Aod went out to the porch, and passed out by the appointed guards, and shut the doors of the chamber upon him, and locked them.

²⁴ And he went out: and Eglom's servants came, and saw, and behold, the doors of the upper chamber were locked; and they said, Does he not uncover his feet in the summer-chamber?

²⁵ And they waited till they were ashamed, and, behold, there was no one that opened the doors of the upper chamber; and they took the key, and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead upon the earth.

⁴ For the purpose of testing Israel by them, to see if they would give ear to the orders of the Lord, which he had given to their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ Now the children of Israel were living among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

⁶ And they took as wives the daughters of these nations and gave their daughters to their sons, and became servants to their gods.

⁷ And the children of Israel did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and put out of their minds the Lord their God, and became servants to the Baals and the Astartes.

⁸ So the wrath of the Lord was burning against Israel, and he gave them up into the hands of Cushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel were his servants for eight years.

⁹ And when the children of Israel made prayer to the Lord, he gave them a saviour, Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.

¹⁰ And the spirit of the Lord came on him and he became judge of Israel, and went out to war, and the Lord gave up Cushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, into his hands and he overcame him.

¹¹ Then for forty years the land had peace, till the death of Othniel, the son of Kenaz.

¹² Then the children of Israel again did evil in the eyes of the Lord; and the Lord made Eglon, king of Moab, strong against Israel, because they had done evil in the Lord's eyes.

¹³ And Eglon got together the people of Ammon and Amalek, and they went and overcame Israel and took the town of palm-trees.

¹⁴ And the children of Israel were servants to Eglon, king of Moab, for eighteen years.

¹⁵ Then when the children of Israel made prayer to the Lord, he gave them a saviour, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man; and the children of Israel sent an offering by him to Eglon, king of Moab.

¹⁶ So Ehud made himself a two-edged sword, a cubit long, which he put on at his right side under his robe.

¹⁷ And he took the offering to Eglon, king of Moab, who was a very fat man.

¹⁸ And after giving the offering, he sent away the people who had come with the offering.

¹⁹ But he himself, turning back from the stone images at Gilgal, said, I have something to say to you in secret, O king. And he said, Let there be quiet. Then all those who were waiting before him went out.

²⁰ Then Ehud came in to him while he was seated by himself in his summer-house. And Ehud said, I have a word from God for you. And he got up from his seat.

²¹ And Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right side, and sent it into his stomach;

²² And the hand-part went in after the blade, and the fat was joined up over the blade; for he did not take the sword out of his stomach. And he went out into the ...

²³ Then Ehud went out into the covered way, shutting the doors of the summer-house on him and locking them.

²⁴ Now when he had gone, the king's servants came, and saw that the doors of the summer-house were locked; and they said, It may be that he is in his summer-house for a private purpose.

²⁵ And they went on waiting till they were shamed, but the doors were still shut; so they took the key, and, opening them, saw their lord stretched out dead on the floor.

²⁶ But Ehud had got away while they were waiting and had gone past the stone images and got away to Seirah.

²⁷ And when he came there, he had a horn sounded in the hill-country of Ephraim, and all the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he at their head.

²⁸ And he said to them, Come after me; for the Lord has given the Moabites, your haters, into your hands. So they went down after him and took the crossing-places of Jordan against Moab, and let no one go across.

²⁹ At that time they put about ten thousand men of Moab to the sword, every strong man and every man of war; not a man got away.

³⁰ So Moab was broken that day under the hand of Israel. And for eighty years the land had peace.

³¹ And after him came Shamgar, the son of Anath, who put to death six hundred Philistines with an ox-stick; and he was another saviour of Israel.

³ five lord ships of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwell on mount Lebanon; from mount Baal-Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.

¹⁶ And Ehud made him a sword having two edges, it was of a cubit length; and he girded it under his raiment upon his right hip.

¹⁷ And he brought the gift to Eglon king of Moab; now Eglon was a very fat man.

¹⁸ And it came to pass when he had ended offering the gift, he sent away the people that had borne the gift.

¹⁹ But he turned from the graven images that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret word unto thee, O king. And he said, Be silent! And all that stood by him went out from him.

²⁰ And Ehud came to him; now he was sitting in the cool upper-chamber, which was for him alone. And Ehud said, I have a word from God unto thee. And he arose from the seat.

²¹ Then Ehud put forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right hip, and thrust it into his belly;

²² and the haft also went in after the blade, and the fat closed upon the blade; for he did not draw the sword out of his belly, and it came out between the legs.

²³ And Ehud went out into the portico, and shut the doors of the upper-chamber upon him, and bolted them.

²⁴ And when he was gone out, the servants of the king came and saw, and behold, the doors of the upper-chamber were bolted. And they said, Surely he is covering his feet in the summer chamber.

²⁵ And they waited till they were ashamed; and behold, he opened not the doors of the upper-chamber, and they took the key, and opened them, and behold, their lord lay dead on the earth.

²⁶ And Ehud had escaped while they lingered, and passed beyond the graven images, and escaped to Seirah.

²⁷ And it came to pass when he was come, that he blew a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill-country, and he before them.

²⁸ And he said to them, Follow after me, for Jehovah has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand. And they went down after him, and took the fords of the Jordan toward Moab, and suffered no one to pass over.

²⁹ And they slew the Moabites at that time, about ten thousand men, all fat, and all men of valour, and not a man escaped.

³⁰ And Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest eighty years.

³¹ And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath; and he smote the Philistines, six hundred men, with an ox-goad. And he also delivered Israel.

³ The five princes of the Philistines, and all the Chanaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hevites that dwelt in mount Libanus, from mount Baal Hermon to the entering into Emath.

⁴ And he left them, that he might try Israel by them, whether they would hear the commandments of the Lord, which he had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses, or not.

⁵ So the children of Israel dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanite, and the Hethite, and the Amorrhite, and the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite:

⁶ And they took their daughters to wives, and they gave their own daughters to their sons, and they served their gods.

⁷ And they did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they forgot their God, and served Baalim and Astaroth.

⁸ And the Lord being angry with Israel, delivered them into the hands of Chusan Rasathaim king of Mesopotamia, and they served him eight years.

⁹ And they cried to the Lord, who raised them up a saviour, and delivered them, to wit, Othoniel the son of Cenez, the younger brother of Caleb:

¹⁰ And the spirit of the Lord was in him, and he judged Israel. And he went out to fight, and the Lord delivered into his hands Chusan Rasathaim king of Syria, and he overthrew him.

¹¹ And the land rested forty years, and Othoniel the son of Cenez died.

¹² And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the Lord: who strengthened against them Eglon king of Moab: because they did evil in his sight.

¹³ And he joined to him the children of Ammon, and Amalec: and he went and overthrew Israel, and possessed the city of palm trees.

¹⁴ And the children of Israel served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years:

¹⁵ And afterwards they cried to the Lord, who raised them up a saviour called Aod, the son of Gera, the son of Jemini, who used the left hand as well as the right. And the children of Israel sent presents to Eglon king of Moab by him.

¹⁶ And he made himself a two-edged sword, with a haft in the midst of the length of the palm of the hand, and was girded therewith under his garment on the right thigh.

¹⁷ And he presented the gifts to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was exceeding fat.

¹⁸ And when he had presented the gifts unto him, he followed his companions that came along with him.

¹⁹ Then returning from Galgal, where the idols were, be said to the king: I have a secret message to thee, O king. And he commanded silence: and all being gone out that were about him,

²⁰ Aod went in to him: now he was sitting in a summer parlour alone, and he said: I have a word from God to thee. And he forthwith rose up from his throne,

²¹ And Aod put forth his left hand, and took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly,

²² With such force that the haft went in after the blade into the wound, and was closed up with the abundance of fat. So that he did not draw out the dagger, but left it in his body as he had struck it in. And forthwith by the secret parts of nature the excrements of the belly came out.

²³ But Aod carefully shutting the doors of the parlour and locking them,

²⁴ Went out by a postern door. And the king’s servants going in, saw the doors of the parlour shut, and they said: Perhaps he is easing nature in his summer parlour.

²⁵ And waiting a long time till they were ashamed, and seeing that no man opened the door, they took a key: and opening, they found their lord lying dead on the ground.

²⁶ But Aod, while they were in confusion, escaped, and passed by the place of the idols, from whence he had returned. And he came to Seirath:

²⁷ And forthwith he sounded the trumpet in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel went down with him, he himself going in the front.

²⁸ And he said to them: Follow me: for the Lord hath delivered our enemies the Moabites into our hands. And they went down after him, and seized upon the fords of the Jordan, which are in the way to Moab: and they suffered no man to pass over.

²⁹ But they slew of the Moabites at that time, about ten thousand, all strong and Valiant men: none of them could escape.

³⁰ And Moab was humbled that day under the hand of Israel: and the land rested eighty years.

³¹ After him was Samgar the son of Anath, who slew of the Philistines six hundred men with a ploughshare: and he also defended Israel.

³ They are: the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the mountains of Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath.

⁴ They were left there be to a test for the Israelites, to find out whether the Israelites would keep the Lord's commandments which he had given their forefathers through Moses.

⁵ They lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

⁶ The Israelites intermarried with them, marrying their daughters, giving their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.

⁷ The Israelites did what was evil in the Lord's sight. They ignored the Lord their God and worshiped the images of Baals and Asherahs.

⁸ The Lord became angry with Israel, so he sold them to Cushan-Rishathaim, king of Aram Naharaim. The Israelites were subject to Cushan-Rishathaim for eight years.

⁹ But when the Israelites cried out to the Lord to help them, he provided someone to rescue them, Othniel, son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, and he saved them.

¹⁰ The Spirit of the Lord came on him, and he became Israel's judge. He went to war with Cushan-Rishathaim, king of Aram, and the Lord handed the king over to Othniel, who was victorious.

¹¹ As a result, the country was a peace for forty years until Othniel, son of Kenaz, died.

¹² But once again the Israelites did what was evil in the Lord's sight, and because they did this the Lord gave power to Eglon, king of Moab, to conquer Israel.

¹³ Eglon had the Ammonites and the Amalekite join him, and then attacked and defeated Israel, taking possession of the City of Palms.

¹⁴ The Israelites were subject to Eglon, king of Moab, for eighteen years.

¹⁵ Again the Israelites cried out to the Lord to help them, and he provided someone to rescue them, Ehud, son of Gera the Benjamite, a left-handed man. The Israelites sent him to pay the tribute to Eglon, king of Moab.

¹⁶ Ehud had made for himself a cubit long double-edged sword, and he strapped it to his right thigh under his clothes.

¹⁷ He came and presented the tribute to Eglon, king of Moab, who was a very fat man.

¹⁸ Then after delivering the tribute he sent home those who had helped carry it.

¹⁹ But when he reached the stone idols near Gilgal, he turned back. He went to see Eglon, and told him, “Your Majesty, I have a secret message for you.” The king told his attendants, “Silence!” and they all left.

²⁰ Ehud then went over to where Eglon was sitting alone in his cool upstairs room, and told him, “I have a message from God for you.” As the king got up from his seat,

²¹ Ehud grabbed his sword with his left hand from his right thigh and drove it into Eglon's belly.

²² The handle went in with the blade and the fat closed over it. So Ehud didn't pull the sword out, and the king defecated.

²³ Then Ehud closed and locked the doors, and escaped through the toilet.

²⁴ After he had left, the servants came and saw that the doors of the room were locked. “He must be using the toilet,” they concluded.

²⁵ So they waited until they couldn't stand it any more, and since he still hadn't opened the doors of the room, they went and found the key and opened the doors. There was their lord, lying dead on the floor.

²⁶ While the servants delayed acting, Ehud escaped, passing the stone idols and on to Seirah.

²⁷ When he got there, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites joined him. They went down from the hills, with Ehud leading them.

²⁸ He told them, “Follow me, for the Lord has handed Moab, your enemy, over to you.” So they followed him down and took control of the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab. They didn't let anyone cross.

²⁹ Then they attacked the Moabites and killed around 10,000 of their best and strongest fighting men. Not a single one escaped.

³⁰ Moab was conquered that day and made subject to Israel, and the country was at peace for eighty years.

³¹ After Ehud was Shamgar, son of Anath, who killed six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He also rescued Israel.

³ Fiue princes of the Philistims, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hiuites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon vntill one come to Hamath.

⁴ And these remayned to proue Israel by them, to wit, whether they would obey the commandements of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hiuites, and the Iebusites,

⁶ And they tooke their daughters to bee their wiues, and gaue their daughters to their sonnes, and serued their gods.

⁷ So the children of Israel did wickedly in the sight of the Lord, and forgate the Lord their God, and serued Baalim, and Asheroth.

⁸ Therefore the wrath of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and he solde them into the hand of Chushan rishathaim King of Aram-naharaim, and the children of Israel serued Chushan rishathaim eyght yeeres.

⁹ And when the children of Israel cryed vnto the Lord, the Lord stirred vp a sauiour to ye children of Israel, and he saued them, euen Othniel the sonne of Kenaz, Calebs yonger brother.

¹⁰ And the spirite of the Lord came vpon him, and he iudged Israel, and went out to warre: and the Lord deliuered Chushan rishathaim king of Aram into his hand, and his hand preuailed against Chushan rishathaim.

¹¹ So the lande had rest fourtie yeeres, and Othniel the sonne of Kenaz dyed.

¹² Then the children of Israel againe committed wickednesse in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord strengthened Eglon King of Moab against Israel, because they had committed wickednesse before the Lord.

¹³ And he gathered vnto him the children of Ammon, and Amalek, and went and smote Israel, and they possessed the citie of palme trees.

¹⁴ So the children of Israel serued Eglon king of Moab eighteene yeeres.

¹⁵ But when the children of Israel cried vnto the Lord, the Lord stirred them vp a sauiour, Ehud the sonne of Gera the sonne of Iemini, a man lame of his right hande: and the children of Israel sent a present by him vnto Eglon King of Moab.

¹⁶ And Ehud made him a dagger with two edges of a cubite length, and he did gird it vnder his rayment vpon his right thigh,

¹⁷ And he presented ye gift vnto Eglon King of Moab (and Eglon was a very fat man)

¹⁸ And when he had now presented the present, he sent away the people that bare ye present,

¹⁹ But he turned againe from the quarris, that were by Gilgal, and said, I haue a secret errand vnto thee, O King. Who said, Keepe silence: and all that stoode about him, went out from him.

²⁰ Then Ehud came vnto him. (and he sate alone in a sommer parler, which he had) and Ehud said, I haue a message vnto thee from God. Then he arose out of his throne,

²⁴ And when he was gone out, his seruantes came: who seeing that the doores of the parler were locked, they sayd, Surely he doeth his easement in his sommer chamber.

²⁵ And they taryed till they were ashamed: and seeing he opened not the doores of the parler, they tooke the key, and opened them, and behold, their lord was fallen dead on the earth.

²⁶ So Ehud escaped (while they taried) and was passed the quarris, and escaped vnto Seirah.

²⁷ And when he came home, he blew a trumpet in mount Ephraim, and the children of Israel went downe with him from the mountaine, and he went before them.

²⁸ Then said he vnto them, Follow me: for the Lord hath deliuered your enemies, euen Moab into your hand. So they went downe after him, and tooke the passages of Iorden towarde Moab, and suffred not a man to passe ouer.

¹² And the children of Israel did again the evil in the eyes of the Lord; and the Lord strengthened 'Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done the evil in the eyes of the Lord.

¹³ And he gathered unto him the children of 'Ammon and 'Amalek, and they went and smote Israel, and took possession of the city of palm-trees.

¹⁴ And the children of Israel served 'Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

¹⁷ And he brought the present near unto 'Eglon the king of Moab; now 'Eglon was a very fat man.

¹⁸ And it came to pass when he had made an end to offer the present, that he sent away the people who had borne the present.

¹⁹ But he himself returned again from the quarries that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret word unto thee, O King. And he said, Keep silence. And thereupon went out from his presence all that stood by him.

²¹ And Ehud stretched forth his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body.

²² And the haft also went in after the blade; and the fat closed upon the blade; for he did not draw the sword out of his body, and it passed into the fundament.

²³ And Ehud went forth into the ante-room, and shut the doors of the upper chamber after him, and locked them.

²⁴ He was just gone out, when his servants came; and they saw, behold, the doors of the upper chamber were locked; and they said, Surely he covereth his feet in the summer chamber.

²⁵ And they tarried till they were ashamed; and behold, he opened not the doors of the upper chamber; wherefore they took the key and opened them: and, behold, their lord was lying dead on the floor.

²⁶ And Ehud had escaped while they were tarrying, and passed beyond the quarries, and escaped unto Se'irah.

²⁷ And it came to pass, when he was come, that he blew the cornet on the mountain of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountain, and he before them.

²⁸ And he said unto them, Pursue after me; for the Lord hath delivered your enemies, the Moabites, into your hand. And they went down after him, and seized on the fords of the Jordan toward Moab, and suffered not a man to pass over.

⁹ When the people of Israel called out to Yahweh, Yahweh raised up someone who would come to help the people of Israel, and who would rescue them: Othniel son of Kenaz (Caleb's younger brother).

¹⁰ Yahweh's Spirit empowered him, and he judged Israel and he went out to war. Yahweh gave him victory over Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram. The hand of Othniel defeated Cushan-Rishathaim.

¹¹ The land had peace for forty years. Then Othniel son of Kenaz died.

¹² After that, the Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and Yahweh gave strength to Eglon king of Moab to overpower the Israelites.

¹³ Eglon joined with the Ammonites and the Amalekites and they went and defeated Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms.

¹⁹ As for Ehud himself, however, when he reached the place where the carved images were made near Gilgal, he turned and went back, and he said, “I have a secret message for you, my king.” Eglon said, “Silence!” So all those serving him left the room.

²⁴ After Ehud had gone, the king's servants came; they saw that the doors of the upper room were locked, so they thought, “Surely he is relieving himself in the coolness of the upper room.”

²⁵ They were growing more concerned until they felt they were neglecting their duty when the king still did not open the doors to the upper room. So they took the key and opened them, and there lay their master, fallen to the floor, dead.

²⁶ While the servants were waiting, wondering what they should do, Ehud escaped and passed beyond the place where there were carved images of idols, and so he escaped to Seirah.

²⁷ When he arrived, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim. Then the people of Israel went down with him from the hills, and he was leading them.

²⁸ He said to them, “Follow me, for Yahweh is about to defeat your enemies, the Moabites.” They followed him and they captured the fords of the Jordan across from the Moabites, and they did not allow anyone to cross the river.

²⁹ At that time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, and all were strong and capable men. Not one escaped.

³⁰ So that day Moab was subdued by the strength of Israel, and the land had rest for eighty years.

¹¹ The land had rest forty years, then Othniel the son of Kenaz died.

¹² The children of Israel again did that which was evil in the LORD’s sight, and the LORD strengthened Eglon the king of Moab against Israel, because they had done that which was evil in the LORD’s sight.

¹³ He gathered the children of Ammon and Amalek to himself; and he went and struck Israel, and they possessed the city of palm trees.

¹⁴ The children of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

¹⁵ But when the children of Israel cried to the LORD, the LORD raised up a saviour for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. The children of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab.

¹⁶ Ehud made himself a sword which had two edges, a cubit in length; and he wore it under his clothing on his right thigh.

¹⁷ He offered the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. Now Eglon was a very fat man.

¹⁸ When Ehud had finished offering the tribute, he sent away the people who carried the tribute.

¹⁹ But he himself turned back from the stone idols that were by Gilgal, and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” The king said, “Keep silence!” All who stood by him left him.

²⁰ Ehud came to him; and he was sitting by himself alone in the cool upper room. Ehud said, “I have a message from God to you.” He arose out of his seat.

²¹ Ehud put out his left hand, and took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his body.

²² The handle also went in after the blade; and the fat closed on the blade, for he didn’t draw the sword out of his body; and it came out behind.

²³ Then Ehud went out onto the porch, and shut the doors of the upper room on him, and locked them.

²⁴ After he had gone, his servants came and saw that the doors of the upper room were locked. They said, “Surely he is covering his feet in the upper room.”

²⁵ They waited until they were ashamed; and behold, he didn’t open the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them, and behold, their lord had fallen down dead on the floor.

²⁶ Ehud escaped while they waited, passed beyond the stone idols, and escaped to Seirah.

²⁷ When he had come, he blew a shofar in the hill country of Ephraim; and the children of Israel went down with him from the hill country, and he led them.

²⁸ He said to them, “Follow me; for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.” They followed him, and took the fords of the Jordan against the Moabites, and didn’t allow any man to pass over.

²⁹ They struck at that time about ten thousand men of Moab, every strong man and every man of valour. No man escaped.

³⁰ So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. Then the land had rest eighty years.

³¹ After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who struck six hundred men of the Philistines with an ox goad. He also saved Israel.

³ He left five princes of the Philistines, and all Canaanites, and the people of Sidon, and Hivites that dwelled in the hill Lebanon, from the hill Baalhermon till to the entering of Hamath.

⁴ And he left them, that in them he should assay Israel, whether they would hear the behests of the Lord, which he commanded to their fathers by the hand of Moses, either nay.

⁵ And so the sons of Israel dwelled in the midst of Canaanites, of Hittites, and of Amorites, and of Perizzites, and of Hivites, and of Jebusites,

⁶ and they wedded wives, the daughters of them; and the sons of Israel gave their daughters to their sons, and they served to their gods.

⁷ And the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and forgat their Lord God, and served Baalim, and Asheroth.

⁸ And the Lord was wroth against Israel, and he betook them into the hands of Chushanrishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, and they served him eight years.

⁹ And they cried to the Lord, and he raised to them a saviour, and delivered them, that is, Othniel, the son of Kenaz, and the younger brother of Caleb.

¹⁰ And the spirit of the Lord was in him, and he deemed Israel. And he went out to battle, and the Lord betook into his hand Chushanrishathaim, king of Syria; and Othniel oppressed him.

¹¹ And the land rested forty years; and Othniel, the son of Kenaz, died.

¹² Forsooth the sons of Israel added to do evil in the sight of the Lord; and he comforted against them Eglon, the king of Moab, for they did evil in the sight of the Lord.

¹³ And the Lord coupled to him the sons of Ammon and Amalek; and he went, and smote Israel, and had in possession the city of Palms.

¹⁴ And the sons of Israel served Eglon, the king of Moab, eighteen years.

¹⁵ And afterward they cried to the Lord; and he raised to them a saviour, Ehud by name, the son of Gera, son of Benjamin, the which Ehud used ever either hand for the right hand. And the sons of Israel sent by him gifts, that is, tribute, to Eglon, king of Moab;

¹⁶ the which Ehud made to him a sword carving on ever either side, of the length of the palm of an hand; and he was girded therewith under the say, that is, a knight’s mantle, in the right hip.

¹⁷ And he brought gifts to Eglon, king of Moab; and Eglon was full fat.

¹⁸ And when he had given gifts to the king, he pursued or followed forth after his fellows that came with him;

¹⁹ and he turned again from Gilgal, where the graven idols were, and he said to the king, O king, I have a privy word to thee. And the king commanded silence. And when all men were gone out, that were about him,

²⁰ Ehud entered to him; and the king sat alone in a summer parlour. And Ehud said, I have the word of God to thee. The which rose anon from his throne.

²¹ And Ehud held forth his left hand, and took his sword from his right hip; and he put it into the king’s womb so strongly,

²² that the pommel, either hilt, pursued or followed the iron in the wound, and was holden strait in the thickest fatness within; and Ehud drew not out the sword, but so as he had smitten Eglon, he left it in his body; and anon by the privates of mankind, the turds of the womb burst out.

²³ Forsooth when the doors of the parlour were closed most diligently, and fastened with a lock,

²⁴ Ehud went out by a porch. And the king’s servants entered, not into the parlour, but into the porch, and they saw the doors of the parlour closed, and they said, In hap he purgeth the womb in the summer parlour.

²⁵ And they abode so long, till they were ashamed; and they saw that no man opened the door, and they took the key, and they opened, and they found their lord lying dead on the earth.

²⁶ And while they were troubled, Ehud fled out, and passed the place of the graven idols, from whence he turned again; and he came into Seirath.

²⁷ And anon he sounded with a clarion in the hill of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel came down with him, and he went in the front.

²⁸ Which said to them, Follow ye me, for the Lord hath betaken our enemies, Moabites, into our hands. And they came down after him, and occupied the fords of Jordan, that led over into Moab. And they suffered not any man to pass over,

²⁹ but they smote in that time about ten thousand Moabites, all mighty men and strong; no man of them might escape.

³⁰ And Moab was made low in that day under the hand of Israel, and the land rested eighty years.

³¹ After him was Shamgar, the son of Anath, that smote of Philistines six hundred men with a goad of ox; and he also defended Israel.

³ He left (alive the) five princes of the Philistines, and all Canaanites, and the people of Sidon, and Hivites that dwelled in the hill Lebanon, from the hill Baalhermon till to the entering of Hamath. (He left alive the five rulers of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the people of Sidon, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baalhermon unto Hamath Pass.)

⁴ And he left them, that in them he should assay Israel, (to see) whether they would hear the behests of the Lord, which he commanded to their fathers by the hand of Moses, either nay. (Yea, he left themalive, so that through them he could test Israel, to see whether they would listen to the Lord’s commands, which he commanded to their fathers through Moses, or not.)

⁵ And so the sons of Israel dwelled in the midst of Canaanites, of Hittites, and of Amorites, and of Perizzites, and of Hivites, and of Jebusites, (And so the Israelites lived in the midst of the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites,)

And the sons of Israel sent by him gifts, that is, (the) tribute, to Eglon, king of Moab; (And they cried to the Lord; and he raised up a saviour for them, named Ehud, the son of Gera, the son of Benjamin, and he used either hand for the right hand. And the Israelites sent him to take the tribute, that is, the taxes, to Eglon, the king of Moab;)

¹⁶ the which Ehud made to him(self) a sword carving on ever either side, of the length of the palm of an hand; and he was girded therewith under the say, that is, a knight’s mantle, in the right hip. (and Ehud made for himself a sword sharp on both sides, the length of the palm of a hand; and he was girded with it under his say,that is, under his knight’s mantle, on the right hip.)

¹⁷ And he brought gifts to Eglon, king of Moab; and Eglon was full fat. (And he brought the tribute, or the taxes, to Eglon, the king of Moab; and Eglon was very fat.)

¹⁸ And when he had given gifts to the king, he followed forth after his fellows that came with him; (And when he had given the tribute to the king, he went away with his fellows who had come with him;)

¹⁹ and he turned again from Gilgal, where (the graven) idols were, and he said to the king, O king, I have a privy word to thee, (or but he turned back at Gilgal, where the carved stones were, and when he had come before the king, he said, O king, I have a private word for thee). And the king commanded silence. And when all men were gone out, that were about him,

²⁰ Ehud entered (un)to him; and the king sat alone in a summer parlour. And Ehud said, I have the word of God to thee, (or I have a word from God for thee). The which rose anon (or at once) from his throne.

²¹ And Ehud held forth his left hand, and took his sword from his right hip; and he put it into the king’s womb so strongly,

²⁵ And they abode so long, till they were ashamed; and they saw that no man opened the door, and they took the key, and they opened (it), and they found their lord lying dead on the earth. (And they waited so long for him, that they were embarrassed; and when they saw that no one opened the door, they took the key, and they opened it, and they found their lord lying dead on the floor.)

²⁶ And while they were troubled, Ehud fled out, and passed the place of (the graven) idols, from whence he turned again, (or and passed the place of the carved stones, where he had turned back); and he came into Seirath.

²⁷ And anon he sounded with a clarion in the hill of Ephraim; and the sons of Israel came down with him, and he went in the front. (And at once he sounded with a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites came down with him, and he went at the front.)

²⁸ Which said to them, Follow ye me, for the Lord hath betaken our enemies, (the) Moabites, into our hands. And they came down after him, and occupied the fords of (the) Jordan (River), that led over into Moab. And they suffered not any man to pass over,

²⁹ but they smote in that time about ten thousand Moabites, all mighty men and strong; no man of them might escape. (but they struck down at that time about ten thousand Moabites, all of them strong and mighty men; yea, not one of them could escape.)

³⁰ And Moab was made low in that day under the hand of Israel, and the land rested eighty years. (And Moab was made low on that day under the hand of Israel, and then the land rested for eighty years.)

³¹ After him was Shamgar, the son of Anath, that smote of Philistines six hundred men with a goad of (an) ox (or who struck down six hundred Philistines with an ox’s goad); and he also defended Israel.

³ five princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanite, and the Zidonian, and the Hivite inhabiting mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-Hermon unto the entering in of Hamath;

⁴ and they are to prove Israel by them, to know whether they obey the commands of Jehovah that He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ And the sons of Israel have dwelt in the midst of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,

⁶ and take their daughters to them for wives, and their daughters have given to their sons, and they serve their gods;

⁷ and the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and forget Jehovah their God, and serve the Baalim and the shrines.

⁸ And the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel, and He selleth them into the hand of Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram-Naharaim, and the sons of Israel serve Chushan-Rishathaim eight years;

⁹ and the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah, and Jehovah raiseth a saviour to the sons of Israel, and he saveth them — Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother;

¹⁰ and the Spirit of Jehovah is upon him, and he judgeth Israel, and goeth out to battle, and Jehovah giveth unto his hand Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram, and strong is his hand against Chushan-Rishathaim;

¹¹ and the land resteth forty years. And Othniel son of Kenaz dieth,

¹² and the sons of Israel add to do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah; and Jehovah strengtheneth Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because that they have done the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah;

¹³ and he gathereth unto him the Bene-Ammon and Amalek, and goeth and smiteth Israel, and they possess the city of palms;

¹⁴ and the sons of Israel serve Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.

¹⁵ And the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah, and Jehovah raiseth to them a saviour, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjamite (a man — shut of his right hand), and the sons of Israel send by his hand a present to Eglon king of Moab;

¹⁶ and Ehud maketh for himself a sword, and it hath two mouths (a cubit is its length), and he girdeth it under his long robe on his right thigh;

¹⁷ and he bringeth near the present to Eglon king of Moab, and Eglon is a very fat man.

¹⁸ And it cometh to pass, when he hath finished to bring near the present, that he sendeth away the people bearing the present,

¹⁹ and he himself hath turned back from the graven images which are at Gilgal, and saith, 'A secret word I have unto thee, O king;' and he saith, 'Hush!' and go out from him do all those standing by him.

²⁰ And Ehud hath come unto him, and he is sitting in the upper chamber of the wall which he hath for himself, and Ehud saith, 'A word of God I have unto thee;' and he riseth from off the throne;

²¹ and Ehud putteth forth his left hand, and taketh the sword from off his right thigh, and striketh it into his belly;

²² and the haft also goeth in after the blade, and the fat shutteth on the blade, that he hath not drawn the sword out of his belly, and it goeth out at the fundament.

²³ And Ehud goeth out at the porch, and shutteth the doors of the upper chamber upon him, and hath bolted it;

²⁴ and he hath gone out, and his servants have come in, and look, and lo, the doors of the upper chamber are bolted, and they say, 'He is only covering his feet in the inner chamber of the wall.'

²⁵ And they stay till confounded, and lo, he is not opening the doors of the upper chamber, and they take the key, and open, and lo, their lord is fallen to the earth — dead.

²⁶ And Ehud escaped during their tarrying, and hath passed by the images, and is escaped to Seirath.

²⁷ And it cometh to pass, in his coming in, that he bloweth with a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim, and go down with him do the sons of Israel from the hill-country, and he before them;

²⁸ and he saith unto them, 'Pursue after me, for Jehovah hath given your enemies, the Moabites, into your hand;' and they go down after him, and capture the passages of the Jordan towards Moab, and have not permitted a man to pass over.

²⁹ And they smite Moab at that time, about ten thousand men, all robust, and every one a man of valour, and not a man hath escaped,

³⁰ and Moab is humbled in that day under the hand of Israel; and the land resteth eighty years.

³¹ And after him hath been Shamgar son of Anath, and he smiteth the Philistines — six hundred men — with an ox-goad, and he saveth — he also — Israel.
