Judges 3:1-6 in English

¹ Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

² only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof:

³ namely, the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath.

⁴ And they were left, to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by Moses.

⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

⁶ and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons and served their gods.

¹ And these are the nations which the Lord left to prove Israel with them, all that had not known the wars of Chanaan.

² Only for the sake of the generations of Israel, to teach them war, only the men before them knew them not.

³ The five lordships of the Phylistines, and every Chananite, and the Sidonian, and the Evite who dwelt in Libanus from the mount of Aermon to Laboemath.

⁴ And this was done in order to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commands of the Lord, which he charged their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt in the midst of the Chananite, and the Chettite, and the Amorite, and the Pherezite, and the Evite, and the Jebusite.

⁶ And they took their daughters for wives to themselves, and they gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites; the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite:

⁶ and they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

¹ At that time there were still many people-groups in Canaan. Yahweh left them there to test the Israeli people. But many of the Israelis in Canaan were ones who had not fought in any of the wars in Canaan. So Yahweh also left those people-groups in Canaan so that the descendants of those who had not fought in any of the wars might learn how to fight.

³ This is a list of the people-groups that Yahweh left there: The Philistines and their five leaders, the people living in the area near Sidon city, the descendants of Canaan, and the descendants of Hiv who were living in the mountains of Lebanon between Baal-Hermon Mountain and Lebo-Hamath.

⁴ Yahweh left these people-groups there to test the Israelis, to see if they would obey his commands which he had told Moses to give them.

⁵ The Israelis lived among the Canaan people-group, the Hiv people-group, the Amor people-group, the Periz people-group, the Hiv people-group, and the Jebus people-group.

⁶ Moses had told the people not to associate with any of those people. But the Israelis took daughters of people from those people-groups to be their own wives, and gave their own daughters to men of those groups, to marry them. And as a result they started to worship the gods of those people-groups.

¹ And these are the nations which the Lord left to prove Israel with them, all that had not known the wars of Chanaan.

¹ Now these are the nations which the Lord kept in the land for the purpose of testing Israel by them, all those who had had no experience of all the wars of Canaan;

² Only because of the generations of the children of Israel, for the purpose of teaching them war — only those who up till then had no experience of it;

³ The five chiefs of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites and the Zidonians and the Hivites living in Mount Lebanon, from the mountain Baal-hermon as far as Hamath:

⁴ For the purpose of testing Israel by them, to see if they would give ear to the orders of the Lord, which he had given to their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ Now the children of Israel were living among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites:

⁶ And they took as wives the daughters of these nations and gave their daughters to their sons, and became servants to their gods.

¹ And these are the nations that Jehovah left, to prove Israel by them, all that had not known all the wars of Canaan;

² only that the generations of the children of Israel might know war by learning it, at the least those who before had known nothing thereof:

³ five lord ships of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwell on mount Lebanon; from mount Baal-Hermon unto the entering into Hamath.

⁴ And they were to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commandments of Jehovah, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites: Hittites and Amorites and Perizzites and Hivites and Jebusites;

⁶ and they took their daughters as wives, and gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

¹ These are the nations which the Lord left, that by them he might instruct Israel, and all that had not known the wars of the Chanaanites:

² That afterwards their children might learn to fight with their enemies, and to be trained up to war:

³ The five princes of the Philistines, and all the Chanaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hevites that dwelt in mount Libanus, from mount Baal Hermon to the entering into Emath.

⁴ And he left them, that he might try Israel by them, whether they would hear the commandments of the Lord, which he had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses, or not.

⁵ So the children of Israel dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanite, and the Hethite, and the Amorrhite, and the Pherezite, and the Hevite, and the Jebusite:

⁶ And they took their daughters to wives, and they gave their own daughters to their sons, and they served their gods.

¹ The following are the nations the Lord left and used to test all those Israelites who had not known what it was like to be part of any of the wars in Canaan.

² (He did so to teach warfare to the later generations of Israel, particularly to those who had not previously experienced it.)

³ They are: the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the mountains of Lebanon from Mount Baal-hermon to Lebo-hamath.

⁴ They were left there be to a test for the Israelites, to find out whether the Israelites would keep the Lord's commandments which he had given their forefathers through Moses.

⁵ They lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

⁶ The Israelites intermarried with them, marrying their daughters, giving their own daughters to their sons, and worshiped their gods.

¹ These nowe are the nations which the Lord left, that he might proue Israel by them (euen as many of Israel as had not knowen all the warres of Canaan,

² Only to make the generations of the children of Israel to know, and to teach them warre, which doutles their predecessors knew not)

³ Fiue princes of the Philistims, and all the Canaanites, and the Sidonians, and the Hiuites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon vntill one come to Hamath.

⁴ And these remayned to proue Israel by them, to wit, whether they would obey the commandements of the Lord, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hiuites, and the Iebusites,

⁶ And they tooke their daughters to bee their wiues, and gaue their daughters to their sonnes, and serued their gods.

¹ Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

² only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as beforetime knew nothing thereof;

³ namely, the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Zidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon unto the entrance of Hamath.

³ Namely, the five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the Zidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt on mount Lebanon, from mount Ba'al-chermon unto the entrance of Chamath.

⁴ And they were left to prove by them the Israelites, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the Lord, which he had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt in the midst of the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Emorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites;

⁶ And they took their daughters to themselves for wives, and their daughters they gave to their sons; and they served their gods.

¹ And these are the nations which the Lord left to prove Israel with them, all that had not known the wars of Canaan.

² Only for the sake of the generations of Israel, to teach them war, only the men before them knew them not.

³ The five lordships of the Philistines, and every Canaanite, and the Sidonian, and the Hivite who dwelt in Lebanon from the mount of Hermon to Lebo-hamath.

⁴ And this was done in order to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commands of the Lord, which he charged their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ And the children of Israel dwelt in the midst of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite.

⁶ And they took their daughters for wives to themselves, and they gave their daughters to their sons, and served their gods.

¹ Now Yahweh left these nations to test Israel, namely everyone in Israel who had not experienced any of the wars fought in Canaan.

² (He did this to teach warfare to the new generation of the Israelites who had not known it before.)

³ These are the nations: the five kings from the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who lived in the Lebanon mountains, from Mount Baal Hermon to Hamath Pass.

⁴ These nations were left as a means by which Yahweh would test Israel, to confirm whether they would obey the commands he gave their ancestors through Moses.

⁵ So the people of Israel lived among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

⁶ Their daughters they took to be their wives, and their own daughters they gave to their sons, and they served their gods.

¹ Now these are the nations which Yahweh left, to test Israel by them, even as many as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

³ He left five princes of the Philistines, and all Canaanites, and the people of Sidon, and Hivites that dwelled in the hill Lebanon, from the hill Baalhermon till to the entering of Hamath.

⁴ And he left them, that in them he should assay Israel, whether they would hear the behests of the Lord, which he commanded to their fathers by the hand of Moses, either nay.

⁵ And so the sons of Israel dwelled in the midst of Canaanites, of Hittites, and of Amorites, and of Perizzites, and of Hivites, and of Jebusites,

⁶ and they wedded wives, the daughters of them; and the sons of Israel gave their daughters to their sons, and they served to their gods.

¹ These be the folks which the Lord left alive, that in them he should teach Israel, and all men that knew not the battles of Canaanites; (These be the nations which the Lord left alive, so that through them he would teach the Israelites, all those who had not been part of the battles for Canaan;)

² and that afterward the sons of them should learn to fight with enemies, and to have custom of battle. (and so that through them their sons would learn to fight with their enemies, and know the ways of battle.)

³ He left (alive the) five princes of the Philistines, and all Canaanites, and the people of Sidon, and Hivites that dwelled in the hill Lebanon, from the hill Baalhermon till to the entering of Hamath. (He left alive the five rulers of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the people of Sidon, and the Hivites who lived on Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baalhermon unto Hamath Pass.)

⁴ And he left them, that in them he should assay Israel, (to see) whether they would hear the behests of the Lord, which he commanded to their fathers by the hand of Moses, either nay. (Yea, he left themalive, so that through them he could test Israel, to see whether they would listen to the Lord’s commands, which he commanded to their fathers through Moses, or not.)

⁵ And so the sons of Israel dwelled in the midst of Canaanites, of Hittites, and of Amorites, and of Perizzites, and of Hivites, and of Jebusites, (And so the Israelites lived in the midst of the Canaanites, the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites,)

⁶ and they wedded wives, the daughters of them; and the sons of Israel gave their daughters to their sons, and they served to their gods (or and they served their gods).

¹ And these are the nations which Jehovah left, to try Israel by them, all who have not known all the wars of Canaan;

² (only for the sake of the generations of the sons of Israel's knowing, to teach them war, only those who formerly have not known them) —

³ five princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanite, and the Zidonian, and the Hivite inhabiting mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-Hermon unto the entering in of Hamath;

⁴ and they are to prove Israel by them, to know whether they obey the commands of Jehovah that He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

⁵ And the sons of Israel have dwelt in the midst of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,

⁶ and take their daughters to them for wives, and their daughters have given to their sons, and they serve their gods;
