²⁰ And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses had spoken: and he drove out thence the three sons of Anak.

²¹ And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

²² And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Beth-el; and Jehovah was with them.

²³ And the house of Joseph sent to spy out Beth-el. (Now the name of the city beforetime was Luz.)

²⁴ And the watchers saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Show us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will deal kindly with thee.

²⁵ And he showed them the entrance into the city; and they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man go and all his family.

²⁶ And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof unto this day.

²⁷ And Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and its towns, nor of Taanach and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and its towns; but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

²⁸ And it came to pass, when Israel was waxed strong, that they put the Canaanites to taskwork, and did not utterly drive them out.

²⁹ And Ephraim drove not out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

³⁰ Zebulun drove not out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became subject to taskwork.

²⁰ And they gave Chebron to Chaleb, as Moses said; and thence he inherited the three cities of the children of Enac.

²¹ But the children of Benjamin did not take the inheritance of the Jebusite who dwelt in Jerusalem; and the Jebusite dwelt with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this day.

²⁷ And Manasse did not drive out the inhabitants of Bæthsan, which is a city of Scythians, nor her towns, nor her suburbs; nor Thanac, nor her towns; nor the inhabitants of Dor, nor her towns; nor the inhabitant of Balac, nor her suburbs, nor her towns; nor the inhabitants of Magedo, nor her suburbs, nor her towns; nor the inhabitants of Jeblaam, nor her suburbs, nor her towns; and the Chananite began to dwell in this land.

²⁸ And it came to pass when Israel was strong, that he made the Chananite tributary, but did not utterly drive them out.

²⁹ And Ephraim did not drive out the Chananite that dwelt in Gazer; and the Chananite dwelt in the midst of him in Gazer, and became tributary.

³⁰ And Zabulon did not drive out the inhabitants of Kedron, nor the inhabitants of Domana: and the Chananite dwelt in the midst of them, and became tributary to them.

²⁰ Hebron city was given to Caleb because Moses had promised him that he could have that city. And Caleb forced the three clans descended from Anak to leave that area.

²¹ But the people of the tribe of Benjamin could not force the people of the Jebus people-group to leave Jerusalem. So, since that time the people of the Jebus people-group have lived in Jerusalem with the people of the tribe of Benjamin.

²² The men of the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh went to fight against the men of Bethel city, and Yahweh helped them.

²³ They sent some spies to find out everything that they could find out about Bethel, which was previously called Luz.

²⁴ The spies saw a man who was coming out of the city. They said to him, “If you show us a way to get into the city, we will be kind to you and we will not kill you.”

²⁵ So the man showed them a way to enter the city. The men of the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh entered the city and killed all the people with their swords, but they did not kill the man who showed them how to get into the city, and they did not kill his family.

²⁶ That man went to the area where the descendants of Heth lived, and built a city. He named the city Luz, and that is still the name of that city.

²⁷ There were people of the Canaan people-group who lived in Beth-Shan, Taanach, Dor, Ibleam, and Megiddo cities and in the surrounding villages. The men of the tribe of Manasseh did not force those people to leave those towns, because the people of the Canaan people-group were determined to stay there.

²⁸ Later, the Israelis became ◄stronger/more numerous►, and they forced the people of the Canaan people-group to work for them as their slaves, but they did not force all the people of the Canaan people-group to leave their land.

²⁹ The men of the tribe of Ephraim did not force the people of the Canaan people-group to leave Gezer city. So the people of the Canaan people-group continued to live with the people of the tribe of Ephraim.

³⁰ The men of the tribe of Zebulun did nor compel the people of the Canaan people-group who were living in Kitron and Nahalol cities to leave. They stayed there and lived among the people of the tribe of Zebulun, but the people of Zebulun forced them to work for them as their slaves.

²⁰ And they gave Chebron to Chaleb, as Moses said; and thence he inherited the three cities of the children of Enac.

²⁴ And the watchers saw a man coming out of the town, and said to him, If you will make clear to us the way into the town, we will be kind to you.

²⁵ So he made clear to them the way into the town, and they put it to the sword; but they let the man and all his family get away safe.

²⁶ And he went into the land of the Hittites, building a town there and naming it Luz: which is its name to this day.

²⁷ And Manasseh did not take away the land of the people of Beth-shean and its daughter-towns, or of Taanach and its daughter-towns, or of the people of Dor and its daughter-towns, or of the people of Ibleam and its daughter-towns, or of the people of Megiddo and its daughter-towns, driving them out; but the Canaanites would go on living in that land.

²⁸ And whenever Israel became strong, they put the Canaanites to forced work, without driving them out completely.

²⁹ And Ephraim did not make the Canaanites who were living in Gezer go out; but the Canaanites went on living in Gezer among them.

³⁰ Zebulun did not make the people of Kitron or the people of Nahalol go out; but the Canaanites went on living among them and were put to forced work.

²⁰ And they gave to Caleb Hebron, as Moses had said; and he dispossessed from thence the three sons of Anak.

²¹ And the children of Benjamin did not dispossess the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

²⁶ Who being sent away, went into the land of Hethim, and built there a city, and called it Luza: which is so called until this day.

²⁰ As Moses had stipulated, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove out from it the descendants of three sons of Anak.

²¹ However, Benjamin could not drive out the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so the Jebusites live among the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this very day.

²² The descendants of Joseph went and attacked the town of Bethel, and the Lord was with them.

²³ They sent spies to investigate Bethel, which was previously known as Luz.

²⁴ The spies saw a man leaving the town and told him, “Please show us how to get into town, and we will treat you well.”

²⁵ The man showed them the way into the town, and they killed all the inhabitants except the man and his family, whom they let go.

²⁶ The man moved to the country of the Hittites, and built a town there and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.

²⁷ However, Manasseh didn't drive out the people living in the towns of Beth Shan, Taanach, Dor, Ibleam, Megiddo and their surrounding villages because the Canaanites insisted on living in the land.

²⁸ When the Israelites grew stronger, they made the Canaanites do forced labor, but they never completely drove them out.

²⁹ Ephraim didn't drive out the Canaanites living in the town of Gezer, so the Canaanites went on living there among them.

³⁰ Zebulun didn't drive out the people living in the towns of Kitron and Nahalol, so the Canaanites went on living there among them. However, the Canaanites were made to do forced labor for the people of Zebulun.

²³ And the house of Ioseph caused to viewe Beth-el (and the name of the citie beforetime was Luz)

²⁴ And the spies sawe a man come out of the citie, and they saide vnto him, Shewe vs, we praie thee, the way into the citie, and we will shewe thee mercie.

²⁵ And when hee had shewed them the waie into the citie, they smote the citie with the edge of the sworde, but they let the man and all his housholde depart.

²⁶ Then the man went into the lande of the Hittites, and built a citie, and called the name thereof Luz, which is the name thereof vnto this daie.

²⁷ Neither did Manasseh destroie Bethshean with her townes, nor Taanach with her townes, nor the inhabitantes of Dor with her townes, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam with her townes, neither the inhabitants of Megiddo with her townes: but the Canaanites dwelled still in that lande.

²⁸ Neuerthelesse when Israel was strong, they put the Canaanites to tribute, and expelled them not wholly.

²⁹ Likewise Ephraim expelled not the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer, but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.
