³ But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

⁴ they also did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-skins, old and rent and bound up,

⁵ and old and patched shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and was become mouldy.

⁶ And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We are come from a far country: now therefore make ye a covenant with us.

⁷ And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a covenant with you?

⁸ And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

⁹ And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of Jehovah thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

³ And the inhabitants of Gabaon heard of all that the Lord did to Jericho and Gai.

⁴ And they also wrought craftily, and they went and made provision and prepared themselves; and having taken old sacks on their shoulders, and old and rent and patched bottles of wine,

⁵ and the upper part of their shoes and their sandals old and clouted on their feet, and their garments old upon them—and the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy and corrupt.

⁶ And they came to Joshua into the camp of Israel to Galgala, and said to Joshua and Israel, We are come from a far land: now then make a covenant with us.

⁷ And the children of Israel said to the Chorrhæan, Peradventure thou dwellest amongst us; and how should I make a covenant with thee?

⁸ And they said to Joshua, We are thy servants: and Joshua said to them, Whence are ye, and whence have ye come?

⁹ And they said, Thy servants are come from a very far country in the name of the Lord thy God: for we have heard his name, and all that he did in Egypt,

⁹ And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

³ When the people who lived in Gibeon city heard that Joshua's army had defeated the people of Jericho and Ai,

⁴ they decided to trick the Israelis. They gathered some old sacks and some old leather wine bags that had been mended after they were cracked, and they put these on the backs of their donkeys.

⁵ They put on old sandals that had been patched, and wore old ragged clothes. And they took along bread that was dry and moldy.

⁶ They traveled to where Joshua and the other Israelis had set up their tents near Gilgal. They said to Joshua and the other Israeli leaders, “We have traveled from a distant land. We want you to make a peace agreement with us.”

⁷ The Israeli leaders said to those men from Gilead who were from the Hiv people-group, “ We do not know if you truly live far from us. If you live near us, we cannot RHQ make a peace agreement with you, because God has commanded us to get rid of the people that are living near us.”

⁸ They replied to Joshua, “ If you make a peace agreement with us, we will be your servants.” But Joshua answered, “What people-group are you? Where do you come from?”

⁹ The men from Gibeon answered, “We want to be your servants. We have come here from a distant land, because we have heard about the great things that your god has done. We have heard about everything that he did in Egypt to help you.

³ And the inhabitants of Gabaon heard of all that the Lord did to Jericho and Gai.

⁴ And they also wrought craftily, and they went and made provision and prepared themselves; and having taken old sacks on their shoulders, and old and tore and patched bottles of wine,

⁹ They said to him, “Your servants have come from a very far country because of the name of the LORD your God; for we have heard of his fame, all that he did in Egypt,

³ And the men of Gibeon, hearing what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,

⁴ Acting with deceit, got food together as if for a long journey; and took old food-bags for their asses, and old and cracked wine-skins kept together with cord;

⁵ And put old stitched-up shoes on their feet, and old clothing on their backs; and all the food they had with them was dry and broken up.

⁶ And they came to Joshua to the tent-circle at Gilgal, and said to him and to the men of Israel, We have come from a far country: so now make an agreement with us.

⁷ And the men of Israel said to the Hivites, It may be that you are living among us; how then may we make an agreement with you?

⁸ And they said to Joshua, We are your servants. Then Joshua said to them, Who are you and where do you come from?

⁹ And they said to him, Your servants have come from a very far country, because of the name of the Lord your God: for the story of his great name, and of all he did in Egypt has come to our ears,

³ And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,

⁴ then they also acted with craft, and they went prepared as on a journey, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine-flasks, old and rent and tied up;

⁵ and old and patched sandals upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

⁶ And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said to him, and to the men of Israel, From a far country are we come; and now make a covenant with us.

⁷ And the men of Israel said to the Hivite, Perhaps thou dwellest in the midst of us, and how should I make a covenant with thee?

⁸ And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said to them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

⁹ And they said to him, From a very far country are thy servants come, because of the name of Jehovah thy God; for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,

³ But they that dwelt in Gabaon, hearing all that Josue had done to Jericho and Hai:

⁴ Cunningly devising took for themselves provisions, laying old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles rent and sewed up again,

⁵ And very old shoes, which for a show of age were clouted with patches, and old garments upon them: the leaves also, which they carried for provisions by the way, were hard, and broken into pieces:

⁶ And they went to Josue, who then abode in the camp at Galgal, and said to him, and to all Israel with him: We are come from a far country, desiring to make peace with you. And the children of Israel answered them, and said:

⁷ Perhaps you dwell in the land which falls to our lot; if so, we can make no league with you.

⁸ But they said to Josue: We are thy servants. Josue said to them: Who are you? and whence came you?

⁹ They answered: From a very far country thy servants are come in the name of the Lord thy God. For we have heard the fame of his power, all the things that he did in Egypt.

³ But when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,

⁴ they decided on a cunning plan. They sent messengers to Joshua, their donkeys wearing worn-out saddles and carrying old wineskins that were torn and patched.

⁵ They put on worn sandals that had been mended and wore old clothes. All their bread was dry and moldy.

⁶ They went to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal and told him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a land far away, so please make a treaty with us.”

⁷ But the Israelites said to the Hivites, “Maybe you live close by. If you do, we cannot make a treaty with you.”

⁸ “We are your servants,” they replied. “But who are you? Where do you come from?” Joshua asked.

⁹ “Your servants have come from a land far away,” they replied. “For we have heard of the reputation of the Lord your God, and reports of all that he did in Egypt,

³ But the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Ioshua had done vnto Iericho, and to Ai.

⁴ And therefore they wrought craftily: for they went, and fayned themselues ambassadours, and tooke olde sackes vpon their asses, and olde bottels for wine, both rent and bound vp,

⁵ And olde shoes and clouted vpon their feete: also the raiment vpon them was old, and all their prouision of bread was dried, and mouled.

⁶ So they came vnto Ioshua into the hoste to Gilgal, and said vnto him, and vnto the men of Israel, Wee be come from a farre countrey: nowe therefore make a league with vs.

⁷ Then the men of Israel said vnto the Hiuites, It may be that thou dwellest among vs, how then can I make a league with thee?

⁸ And they said vnto Ioshua, We are thy seruants. Then Ioshua saide vnto them, Who are ye? and whence come ye?

⁹ And they answered him, From a very farre countrey thy seruants are come for the Name of the Lord thy God: for we haue heard his fame and all that he hath done in Egypt,

³ But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,

⁴ they also did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine skins, worn and rent and patched up;

⁵ and worn shoes and clouted upon their feet, and worn garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and was become crumbs.

⁶ And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel: 'We are come from a far country; now therefore make ye a covenant with us.'

⁷ And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites: 'Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a covenant with you?'

⁸ And they said unto Joshua: 'We are thy servants.' And Joshua said unto them: 'Who are ye? and from whence come ye?'

⁵ And put old and patched-up shoes upon their feet, and old garments upon themselves; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

⁶ And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We are come from a far-off country; and now make ye a covenant with us.

⁷ And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell in the midst of us; and how can we make a covenant with you:

³ When the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,

⁴ they acted with a cunning plan. They went as messengers. They took worn-out sacks and put them on their donkeys. They also took old wineskins that were worn, torn, and had been repaired.

⁵ They put old and patched sandals on their feet, and dressed in old, worn-out clothing. All the bread in their food supply was dry and moldy.

⁶ Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and to the men of Israel, “We have traveled from a very far country, so now make a covenant with us.”

⁷ The men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you live near us. How can we make a covenant with you?”

⁸ They said to Joshua, “We are your servants.” Joshua said to them, “Who are you? Where did you come from?”

⁹ They said to him, “Your servants have come here from a land very far away, because of the name of Yahweh your God. We have heard a report about him and about everything that he did in Egypt—

³ But when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and to Ai,

⁴ they also resorted to a ruse, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks on their donkeys, and old, torn-up and bound up wine skins,

⁵ and old and patched sandals on their feet, and wore old garments. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy.

³ And they that dwelt in Gibeon, heard all the things that Joshua had done to Jericho, and to Ai;

⁴ and they thought fellily or slyly, and took to themselves meats, and putted eld or old sackcloths on asses, and wine bottles broken, and sewed or patched,

⁵ and full eld or old shoes, the which were sewed together with old patches, to show their oldness; and these men were clothed with full old clothes; also the loaves, which they bare for lifelode in the way, were hard and broken into gobbets.

⁶ And they went to Joshua, that dwelled then in tents in Gilgal; and they said to him, and to all Israel together, We have come from a far land, and we covet to make peace with you.

⁷ And the men of Israel answered to them, and said, Lest peradventure ye dwell in the land, which is due to us by heritage, and we may not make bond of peace with you.

⁸ And they said to Joshua, We be thy servants. To whom Joshua said, What men be ye, and from whence came ye?

⁹ They answered, Thy servants came from a full far land in the name of thy Lord God; for we have heard the fame of his power, and all things which he did in Egypt,

³ And they that dwelt in Gibeon, heard (of) all the things that Joshua had done to Jericho, and to Ai;

⁴ and they thought fellily, and took to themselves meats, and putted eld sackcloths on asses, and wine bottles broken, and sewed (up)/and patched, (and they thought out things craftily, and then took some food for themselves, and put old sackcloths upon their donkeys, and wine bottles that were broken and then sewed up, or patched,)

⁵ and full eld shoes, the which were sewed together with old patches, to show their oldness; and these men were clothed with full old clothes; also the loaves, which they bare for lifelode in the way, were hard and broken into gobbets, (or and the bread, which they carried for sustenance on the way, was hard and broken into pieces).

⁶ And they went to Joshua, that dwelled then in tents in Gilgal (or who lived then in the camp at Gilgal); and they said to him, and to all Israel together, We have come from a far land, and we covet to make peace with you.

⁷ And the men of Israel answered to them, and said, Lest peradventure ye dwell in the land, which is due to us by heritage, and we may not make bond of peace with you. (And the Israelites answered, and said to them, Agreed, unless ye live in the land that is due to us by inheritance, and then we cannot make a covenant with you.)

⁸ And they said to Joshua, We be thy servants. To whom Joshua said, What men be ye, and from whence came ye?

⁹ They answered, (We) Thy servants came from a full far land in the name of thy Lord God; for we have heard the fame of his power, and all (the) things which he did in Egypt,

³ And the inhabitants of Gibeon have heard that which Joshua hath done to Jericho and to Ai,

⁴ and they work, even they, with subtilty, and go, and feign to be ambassadors, and take old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up,

⁵ and sandals, old and patched, on their feet, and old garments upon them, and all the bread of their provision is dry — it was crumbs.
