Job 1:1-8 in English

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.

² And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

³ His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

⁴ And his sons went and held a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

⁵ And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

⁶ Now it came to pass on the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, that Satan also came among them.

⁷ And Jehovah said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

⁸ And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil.

³ And his cattle consisted of seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses in the pastures, and a very great household, and he had a great husbandry on the earth; and that man was most noble of the men of the east.

⁴ And his sons visiting one another prepared a banquet every day, taking with them also their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

⁵ And when the days of the banquet were completed, Job sent and purified them, having risen up in the morning, and offered sacrifices for them, according to their number, and one calf for a sin-offering for their souls: for Job said, Lest peradventure my sons have thought evil in their minds against God. Thus then Job did continually.

⁶ And it came to pass on a day, that, behold, the angels of God came to stand before the Lord, and the devil came with them.

⁷ And the Lord said to the devil, Whence art thou come? And the devil answered the Lord, and said, I am come from compassing the earth, and walking up and down in the world.

⁸ And the Lord said to him, Hast thou diligently considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a man blameless, true, godly, abstaining from everything evil?

¹ In the land named Uz, there was a man named Job. He was a very godly/righteous DOU man, who greatly respected/revered God and always avoided doing evil things.

² He had seven sons and three daughters.

³ He owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 1,000 oxen, and 500 female donkeys. He also had many servants. He was the richest man in all the area east of the Jordan River.

⁴ Each year, Job's sons made feasts in their houses to celebrate their birthdays. Whenever each one made a feast, he would invite all his brothers and his three sisters to come and eat together.

⁵ When each celebration ended, Job would summon them. He would get up early in the morning and kill animals and burn them on the altar as sacrifices, one for each of his children. He said to himself, “Perhaps one of my sons has sinned and said something evil about God in his heart.”

⁶ One day, the angels came and gathered together in front of Yahweh, and Satan came too.

⁷ Yahweh asked Satan, “Where have you come from?” Satan replied, “I have come from the earth, where I been traveling back and forth, seeing what is happening.”

⁸ Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you ◄noticed/thought about► my faithful servant Job? He is very godly/righteous DOU, he greatly respects/reveres me, and he always avoids doing evil things. There is no one else on the earth like him.”

⁴ His sons regularly went to one another's houses, and every one on his day gave a feast: and at these times they sent for their three sisters to take part in their feasts with them.

⁵ And at the end of their days of feasting, Job sent and made them clean, getting up early in the morning and offering burned offerings for them all. For, Job said, It may be that my sons have done wrong and said evil of God in their hearts. And Job did this whenever the feasts came round.

⁶ And there was a day when the sons of the gods came together before the Lord, and the Satan came with them.

⁷ And the Lord said to the Satan, Where do you come from? And the Satan said in answer, From wandering this way and that on the earth, and walking about on it.

⁸ And the Lord said to the Satan, Have you taken note of my servant Job, for there is no one like him on the earth, a man without sin and upright, fearing God and keeping himself far from evil?

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and this man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God and abstained from evil.

² And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

³ And his substance was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and very many servants; and this man was greater than all the children of the east.

⁴ And his sons went and made a feast in the house of each one on his day; and they sent and invited their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

⁵ And it was so, when the days of the feasting were gone about, that Job sent and hallowed them; and he rose up early in the morning, and offered up burnt-offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

⁶ And there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah; and Satan came also among them.

⁷ And Jehovah said to Satan, Whence comest thou? And Satan answered Jehovah and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

⁸ And Jehovah said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God and abstaineth from evil?

¹ There was a man in the land of Hus, whose name was Job, and that man was simple and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil.

² And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

³ And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a family exceeding great: and this man was great among all the people of the east.

⁴ And his sons went, and made a feast by houses every one in his day. And sending they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

⁵ And when the days of their feasting were gone about, Job sent to them, and sanctified them: and rising up early offered holocausts for every one of them. For he said: Lest perhaps my sons have sinned, and have blessed God in their hearts. So did Job all days.

⁶ Now on a certain day when the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, Satan also was present among them.

⁷ And the Lord said to him: Whence comest thou? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.

⁸ And the Lord said to him: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a simple and upright man, and fearing God, and avoiding evil?

¹ Once there was a man called Job who lived in the land of Uz. He was a man of integrity who did what was right. He respected God and avoided evil.

² He had seven sons and three daughters.

³ He owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred teams of oxen, and five hundred female donkeys, as well as many servants. He was more wealthy than anyone else in the East.

⁴ Job's sons used to take turns holding feasts in their homes on their specific day, also inviting their sisters to come and eat and drink with them.

⁵ When the days of feasting were over, Job would send for them and purify them by getting up early in the morning to offer a burnt offering for each of them. He was concerned, thinking to himself, “Maybe my children have sinned in some way and have unintentionally offended God.” This is what Job always did.

⁶ One day the angels came to present themselves to the Lord, and Satan came with them.

⁷ The Lord asked Satan, “What have you been doing?” “Traveling around on earth, going here and there,” Satan replied.

⁸ “Have you paid attention to Job, my servant?” asked the Lord. “There's no one like him on earth, a man of integrity who does what is right, who respects God and avoids evil.”

¹ There was a man in the lande of Vz called Iob, and this man was an vpright and iust man, one that feared God, and eschewed euill.

² And he had seue sonnes, and three daughters.

³ His substance also was seuen thousande sheepe, and three thousand camels, and fiue hundreth yoke of oxen, and fiue hundreth shee asses, and his family was very great, so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the East.

⁴ And his sonnes went and banketted in their houses, euery one his day, and sent, and called their three sisters to eate and to drinke with them.

⁵ And when the dayes of their banketting were gone about, Iob sent, and sanctified them, and rose vp early in the morning, and offred burnt offrings according to the nomber of them all. For Iob thought, It may be that my sonnes haue sinned, and blasphemed God in their hearts: thus did Iob euery day.

⁶ Nowe on a day when the children of God came and stoode before the Lord, Satan came also among them.

⁷ Then the Lord sayde vnto Satan, Whence commest thou? And Satan answered the Lord, saying, From compassing the earth to and from, and from walking in it.

⁸ And the Lord saide vnto Satan, Hast thou not considered my seruant Iob, how none is like him in the earth? an vpright and iust man, one that feareth God, and escheweth euill?

² And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters.

³ His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

⁴ And his sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each one upon his day; and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

⁵ And it happened, when the days of the feast were gone round, that Job sent and sanctified them, and he then rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of all of them; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and have renounced God in their heart. In this manner used Job to do all the time.

⁶ Now it happened on a certain day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, that the Accuser also came in the midst of them.

⁷ Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Whence comest thou? And the Accuser answered the Lord, and said, From roaming over the earth, and from wandering through it.

⁸ Then said the Lord unto the Accuser, Hast thou directed thy attention toward my servant Job; for there is none like him on the earth, a man perfect and upright, who feareth God, and escheweth evil?

⁵ And when the days of their feasting had gone round, Job used to send for them and sanctify them, and to rise up early in the morning and offer burnt-offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and have renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

⁶ Now on a certain day the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, and Satan also came among them.

⁷ And Jehovah said to Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From wandering over the earth, and walking up and down in it.

⁸ And Jehovah said to Satan, Hast thou observed my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, an upright and good man, fearing God and departing from evil?

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job; and Job was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned from evil.

² There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

³ He possessed seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred pairs of oxen, and five hundred donkeys and a great many servants. He was the man who was the greatest of all the people of the East.

⁴ On each son's assigned day, he would give a feast in his house. They would send and call for their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

⁵ When the days of the feast were over, Job would send for them and he would consecrate them. He would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings for each of his children, for he would say, “It may be that my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.” Job always did this.

⁶ Then it was the day when the sons of God came to present themselves before Yahweh. Satan also came with them.

⁷ Yahweh said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Then Satan answered Yahweh and said, “From wandering on the earth, from going back and forth on it.”

⁸ Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and turns from evil.”

For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.

⁶ Now on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before Yahweh, Satan also came among them.

⁷ Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

⁸ Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.”

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God, and turned away from evil.

² There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

³ His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

⁴ His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

⁵ It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.

⁶ Now on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before the LORD, Satan also came amongst them.

⁷ The LORD said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

² And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters.

³ His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

⁴ And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.

⁵ And it was so, when the days of their feasting were ended, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose early in the morning, and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.

⁶ Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

⁷ And the LORD said to Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down upon it.

⁸ And the LORD said to Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and shunneth evil?

⁵ And when the days of feast had passed into the world, that is, in the end of the week, Job sent to them, and hallowed them, and he rose early, and offered burnt sacrifices by all. For he said, Lest peradventure my sons do sin, and curse God in their hearts, or Lest peradventure my sons sin, and bless to God in their hearts. Job did so in all days.

⁶ And in a day, when the sons of God were come to be present before the Lord, also Satan came among them.

⁷ To whom the Lord said, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered, and said, I have compassed the earth, and I have walked through it.

⁸ And the Lord said to him, Whether thou hast beheld my servant Job, that there is no man in the earth like him; he is a simple man, and rightful or right, and dreading God, and going away from evil?

¹ In the land of Uz was a man that was called Job; and that man was simple, that is, without guile, and rightful, and dreading God, and going away from evil. (In the land of Uz there was a man who was called Job; and that man was without guile, and upright, and feared God or and revered God, and went away from evil.)

² And there were seven sons and three daughters born to him;

³ and his possession was seven thousand of sheep, and three thousand of camels, and five hundred yokes of oxen, and five hundred of female asses (or and five hundred female donkeys), and full much household; and this Job was a great man among all the men of the east.

⁴ And his sons went, and made feasts by their houses, each man in his day; and they sent, and called their three sisters, to eat, and to drink wine with them. (And his sons held feasts at their houses, each one in his turn; and they sent, and called their three sisters, to come and eat, and drink wine with them.)

⁵ And when the days of feast had passed into the world, that is, in (to) the end of the week, Job sent to them, and hallowed them, and he rose early, and offered burnt sacrifices by all, (or And when the days of feasting had ended, Job sent for them, and sanctified them, and he rose up early, and offered burnt sacrifices for all of them). For he said, Lest peradventure my sons do sin, and curse God in their hearts, or Forsooth he said, Lest peradventure my sons sin, and blessto God in their hearts. Job did so in all (the) days.

⁶ And in a day, when the sons of God were come to be present before the Lord, also Satan came among them. (Now on a day, when the sons of God came and were present before the Lord, Satan also came among them.)

⁷ To whom the Lord said, From whence comest thou? And Satan answered, and said, I have compassed the earth, and I have walked through it. (To whom the Lord said, Where did you come from? And Satan answered, I have gone all around the earth, and I have walked throughout it.)

⁸ And the Lord said to him, Whether thou hast beheld my servant Job, that there is no man in the earth like him; he is a simple man, and rightful, and dreading God, and going away from evil? (And the Lord said to him, Hast thou seen my servant Job? There is no man on earth like him; yea, he is without guile, and upright, and feareth God or and revereth God, and goeth away from evil.)

¹ A man there hath been in the land of Uz — Job his name — and that man hath been perfect and upright — both fearing God, and turning aside from evil.

² And there are borne to him seven sons and three daughters,

³ and his substance is seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred pairs of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a service very abundant; and that man is greater than any of the sons of the east.

⁴ And his sons have gone and made a banquet — the house of each in his day — and have sent and called to their three sisters to eat and to drink with them;

⁵ and it cometh to pass, when they have gone round the days of the banquet, that Job doth send and sanctify them, and hath risen early in the morning, and caused to ascend burnt-offerings — the number of them all — for Job said, 'Perhaps my sons have sinned, yet blessed God in their heart.' Thus doth Job all the days.

⁶ And the day is, that sons of God come in to station themselves by Jehovah, and there doth come also the Adversary in their midst.

⁷ And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, 'Whence comest thou?' And the Adversary answereth Jehovah and saith, 'From going to and fro in the land, and from walking up and down on it.'

⁸ And Jehovah saith unto the Adversary, 'Hast thou set thy heart against My servant Job because there is none like him in the land, a man perfect and upright, fearing God, and turning aside from evil?'
