Isaiah 10:1-27 in English

¹ Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers that write perverseness;

² to turn aside the needy from justice, and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!

³ And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?

⁴ They shall only bow down under the prisoners, and shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

⁵ Ho Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, the staff in whose hand is mine indignation!

⁶ I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

⁷ Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few.

⁸ For he saith, Are not my princes all of them kings?

⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

¹⁰ As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

¹¹ shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

¹² Wherefore it shall come to pass, that, when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.

¹³ For he hath said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding: and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and like a valiant man I have brought down them that sit on thrones:

¹⁴ and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

¹⁵ Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? as if a rod should wield them that lift it up, or as if a staff should lift up him that is not wood.

¹⁶ Therefore will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory there shall be kindled a burning like the burning of fire.

¹⁷ And the light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day.

¹⁸ And he will consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and it shall be as when a standard-bearer fainteth.

¹⁹ And the remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child may write them.

²⁰ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again lean upon him that smote them, but shall lean upon Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

²¹ A remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

²² For though thy people, Israel, be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them shall return: a destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

²³ For a full end, and that determined, will the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, make in the midst of all the earth.

²⁴ Therefore thus saith the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian, though he smite thee with the rod, and lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.

²⁵ For yet a very little while, and the indignation against thee shall be accomplished, and mine anger shall be directed to his destruction.

²⁶ And Jehovah of hosts will stir up against him a scourge, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and his rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

²⁷ And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall depart from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed by reason of fatness.

² perverting the cause of the poor, violently wresting the judgment of the needy ones of my people, that the widow may be a prey to them, and the orphan a spoil.

³ And what will they do in the day of visitation? for affliction shall come to you from afar: and to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory,

⁴ that ye may not fall into captivity? For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is yet exalted.

⁵ Woe to the Assyrians; the rod of my wrath, and anger are in their hands.

⁶ I will send my wrath against a sinful nation, and I will charge my people to take plunder and spoil, and to trample the cities, and to make them dust.

⁷ But he meant not thus, neither did he devise thus in his soul: but his mind shall change, and that to destroy nations not a few.

⁸ And if they should say to him, Thou alone art ruler;

⁹ then shall he say, Have I not taken the country above Babylon and Chalanes, where the tower was built? and have I not taken Arabia, and Damascus, and Samaria?

¹⁰ As I have taken them, I will also take all the kingdoms: howl, ye idols in Jerusalem, and in Samaria.

¹¹ For as I did to Samaria and her idols, so will I do also to Jerusalem and her idols.

¹² And it shall come to pass, when the Lord shall have finished doing all things on mount Sion and Jerusalem, that I will visit upon the proud heart, even upon the ruler of the Assyrians, and upon the boastful haughtiness of his eyes.

¹³ For he said, I will act in strength, and in the wisdom of my understanding I will remove the boundaries of nations, and will spoil their strength.

¹⁴ And I will shake the inhabited cities: and I will take with my hand all the world as a nest: and I will even take them as eggs that have been left; and there is none that shall escape me, or contradict me.

¹⁵ Shall the axe glorify itself without him that hews with it? or shall the saw lift up itself without him that uses it, as if one should lift a rod or staff? but it shall not be so;

¹⁶ but the Lord of hosts shall send dishonour upon thine honour, and burning fire shall be kindled upon thy glory.

¹⁷ And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and he shall sanctify him with burning fire, and it shall devour the wood as grass.

¹⁸ In that day the mountains shall be consumed, and the hills, and the forests, and fire shall devour both soul and body: and he that flees shall be as one fleeing from burning flame.

¹⁹ And they that are left of them shall be a small number, and a child shall write them.

²⁰ And it shall come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel shall no more join themselves with, and the saved of Jacob shall no more trust in, them that injured them; but they shall trust in the Holy God of Israel, in truth.

²¹ And the remnant of Jacob shall trust on the mighty God.

²² And though the people of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant of them shall be saved.

²³ He will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because the Lord will make a short work in all the world.

²⁴ Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, Be not afraid, my people who dwell in Sion, of the Assyrians, because he shall smite thee with a rod: for I am bringing a stroke upon thee, that thou mayest see the way of Egypt.

²⁵ For yet a little while, and the indignation shall cease: but my wrath shall be against their council.

²⁶ And God will stir up enemies against them, according to the stroke of Madiam in the place of affliction: and his wrath shall be by the way of the sea, even to the way that leads to Egypt.

²⁷ And it shall come to pass in that day, that his yoke shall be taken away from thy shoulder, and his fear from thee, and the yoke shall be destroyed from off your shoulders.

¹ Terrible things will happen to you judges who are unjust and who make unfair laws.

² You refuse to help poor people, and you do not allow them to get the things that they should get. You allow people to steal things from widows and do unfair things to orphans.

³ When I punish you by sending people from distant lands to cause you to experience disasters, ◄to whom will you run to get help?/there will be no one who can help you.► RHQ Your valuable possessions will certainly not be safe RHQ anywhere.

⁴ You will be able only to stumble along as you are taken away with other prisoners, or else your corpses will lie on the ground with others who have been killed. But even after that happens, Yahweh will still be very angry with you. He will still be ready to strike you again with his fist.

⁵ Yahweh says, “Terrible things will happen to Assyria. It is true that their army is like a rod/club DOU with which I punish other nations because I am very angry with those nations DOU.

⁶ Sometimes I send the armies of Assyria to attack a godless nation, to fight against other people who have caused me to be angry. I send them to capture people and to seize and take away their possessions, and to trample them like SIM people walk on mud in the streets.

⁷ But the king of Assyria does not understand, he does not realize that he is only like a weapon in my hand. He wants only to destroy people, to get rid of many nations.

⁸ He says, ‘All of my army commanders will soon be kings of these nations that I conquer!

⁹ We destroyed Calno city like we destroyed Carchemish city, We destroyed Hamath city like we destroyed Arpad city; we destroyed Samaria just like we destroyed Damascus.

¹⁰ We were able to destroy all those kingdoms that were full of idols, kingdoms whose idols were greater than the idols in Jerusalem and Samaria.

¹¹ So we will defeat Jerusalem and destroy the idols that are there, just like we destroyed Samaria and the idols that were there!’

¹² But, I, Yahweh, say that after I have used Assyria to finish what I want to do to punish the people in Jerusalem DOU, I will punish the king of Assyria because he has been very proud and arrogant/boastful DOU.

¹³ He says, ‘By my own great power MTY I have done these things. I have been able to do them because I am very wise and very intelligent. My army removed the barriers at the borders of nations and carried away all their valuable things. My army has knocked down their kings like SIM a ferocious bull would.

¹⁴ Like MET a farmer reaches into a bird's nest to take away the eggs, we have taken away the treasures of other countries DOU. The people were not like birds that would flap their wings or chirp loudly to protest about their eggs being stolen; the people did not object at all to their treasures being stolen.’

¹⁵ But I, Yahweh, say that an axe certainly cannot RHQ boast about being stronger than the person who uses it, and a saw is not greater than the person who uses it. A rod cannot control the one who holds it RHQ, and a wooden club cannot lift up a person RHQ. So the king of Assyria should not boast that he has done these things with his own wisdom and strength.

¹⁶ And I, the Commander of the armies of angels, will send a plague among the proud soldiers of Assyria; it will be like MET a fire that will kill them and get rid of their glory/wealth.

¹⁷ I, Yahweh, who am like MET a light for the people of Israel, will be the fire; I, the Holy One, will be like a flame. The soldiers of Assyria are like MET thorns and briers, and I will burn them up in one night.

¹⁸ There are glorious forests and fertile farmlands in Assyria, but I will completely destroy them; they will be like SIM a very sick person who shrivels up and then dies.

¹⁹ There will be very few trees left in those forests; even a child will be able to count them.”

²⁰ In the future there will be only a few people left in Israel; not many descendants of Jacob will still be alive. But they will no longer rely on the king of Assyria, the king of the nation that tried to destroy them. Instead, they will faithfully/sincerely trust in Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel.

²¹ Those Israelis will return to their mighty God.

²² Now, the people of Israel are as numerous as the grains of sand on the seashore, but only a few of them will return from the countries to which they were exiled. Yahweh has decided to destroy most of the Israelis and that is what he must do because he is completely just/righteous.

²³ Yes, the Commander of the armies of angels has already decided to destroy the entire land of Israel.

²⁴ This is what the Commander of the armies of angels says: “My people in Jerusalem, do not be afraid of the army of Assyria when they beat you with rods and clubs, like the men of Egypt did to your ancestors long ago.

²⁵ Soon I will no longer be angry with you, and then I will be angry with the people of Assyria and destroy them!”

²⁶ The Commander of the armies of angels will whip them. He will do to them like he did when he helped Gideon and his 300 soldiers to defeat the army of the Midian people-group, and like he did when he showed his mighty power MTY by causing the army of Egypt to drown in the Red Sea.

²⁷ Some day, Yahweh will cause the army of Assyria to stop oppressing you, his people; he will end your suffering and your being slaves of the people of Assyria MET; he will take away the load that you people of Judah have been carrying, and cause things to go well for you.

¹ Woe to them that write wickedness; for when they write they do write wickedness,

² perverting the cause of the poor, violently wresting the judgement of the needy ones of my people, that the widow may be a prey to them, and the orphan a spoil.

³ And what will they do in the day of visitation? for affliction shall come to you from afar: and to whom will you° flee for help? and where will you° leave your glory,

⁴ that you° may not fall into captivity? For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is yet exalted.

⁵ Woe to the Assyrians; the rod of my wrath, and anger are in their hands.

⁶ I will send my wrath against a sinful nation, and I will charge my people to take plunder and spoil, and to trample the cities, and to make them dust.

⁷ But he meant not thus, neither did he devise thus in his soul: but his mind shall change, and that to destroy nations not a few.

⁸ And if they should say to him, You alone are ruler;

⁹ then shall he say, Have I not taken the country above Babylon and Chalanes, where the tower was built? and have I not taken Arabia, and Damascus, and Samaria?

¹⁰ As I have taken them, I will also take all the kingdoms: howl, you° idols in Jerusalem, and in Samaria.

¹¹ For as I did to Samaria and her idols, so will I do also to Jerusalem and her idols.

¹² And it shall come to pass, when the Lord shall have finished doing all things on Mount Sion and Jerusalem, that I will visit upon the proud heart, even upon the ruler of the Assyrians, and upon the boastful haughtiness of his eyes.

¹³ For he said, I will act in strength, and in the wisdom of my understanding I will remove the boundaries of nations, and will spoil their strength.

¹⁴ And I will shake the inhabited cities: and I will take with my hand all the world as a nest: and I will even take them as eggs that have been left; and there is none that shall escape me, or contradict me.

¹⁵ Shall the axe glorify itself without him that hews with it? or shall the saw lift up itself without him that uses it, as if one should lift a rod or staff? but it shall not be so;

¹⁶ but the Lord of hosts shall send dishonour upon your honour, and burning fire shall be kindled upon your glory.

¹⁷ And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and he shall sanctify him with burning fire, and it shall devour the wood as grass.

¹⁸ In that day the mountains shall be consumed, and the hills, and the forests, and fire shall devour both soul and body: and he that flees shall be as one fleeing from burning flame.

¹⁹ And they that are left of them shall be a small number, and a child shall write them.

²⁰ And it shall come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel shall no more join themselves with, and the saved of Jacob shall no more trust in, them that injured them; but they shall trust in the Holy God of Israel, in truth.

²¹ And the remnant of Jacob shall trust on the mighty God.

²² And though the people of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant of them shall be saved.

²³ He will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because the Lord will make a short work in all the world.

³ And what will you do in the day of punishment, and in the destruction which is coming from far? to whom will you go for help, and what will become of your glory?

⁴ ... For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

⁵ Ho! Assyrian, the rod of my wrath, the instrument of my punishment!

⁶ I will send him against a nation of wrongdoers, and against the people of my wrath I will give him orders, to take their wealth in war, crushing them down like the dust in the streets.

⁷ But this is not what is in his mind, and this is not his design; but his purpose is destruction, and the cutting off of more and more nations.

⁸ For he says, Are not all my captains kings?

⁹ Will not the fate of Calno be like that of Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

¹⁰ As my hand has come on the kingdoms of the images, whose pictured images were more in number than those of Jerusalem and Samaria;

¹¹ So, as I have done to Samaria and her images, I will do to Jerusalem and her images.

¹² For this cause it will be that, when the purpose of the Lord against Mount Zion and Jerusalem is complete, I will send punishment on the pride of the heart of the king of Assyria, and on the glory of his uplifted eyes.

¹³ For he has said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my knowledge, for I am wise: and I have taken away the limits of the peoples' lands, and the stores of their wealth have become mine; and I have made towns low in the dust, sending destruction on those living in them;

¹⁴ And I have put my hands on the wealth of the peoples, as on the place where a bird has put her eggs; and as a man may take the eggs from which a bird has gone, so I have taken all the earth for myself: and not a wing was moved, and not a mouth gave out a sound.

¹⁵ Will the axe say high-sounding words against him who is using it, or the blade be full of pride against him who is cutting with it? As if a rod had the power of shaking him who is using it, or as if a stick might take up him who is not wood.

¹⁶ For this cause the Lord, the Lord of armies, will make his fat become wasted; and in his inner parts a fire will be lighted like a burning flame.

¹⁷ And the light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: wasting and burning up his thorns in one day.

¹⁸ And he will put an end to the glory of his woods and of his planted fields, soul and body together; and it will be as when a man is wasted by disease.

¹⁹ And the rest of the trees of his wood will be small in number, so that a child may put them down in writing.

²⁰ And it will be in that day that the rest of Israel, and those of Jacob who have come safely through these troubles, will no longer go for help to him whose rod was on their back, but their faith will be in the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

²¹ The rest, even the rest of Jacob, will come back to the Strong God.

²² For though your people, O Israel, are as the sand of the sea, only a small number will come back: for the destruction is fixed, overflowing in righteousness.

²³ For the Lord, the Lord of armies, is about to make destruction complete in all the land.

²⁴ For this cause the Lord, the Lord of armies, says, O my people living in Zion, have no fear of the Assyrian, even if his rod comes on your back, and his stick is lifted up as in Egypt.

²⁵ For in a very short time my passion will be over, and my wrath will be turned to their destruction.

²⁶ And the Lord of armies will be shaking a whip against him, as when he overcame Midian at the rock of Oreb: and his rod will be lifted up against them as it was against the Egyptians.

²⁷ And in that day the weight which he put on your back will be taken away, and his yoke broken from off your neck.

¹ Woe unto them that decree iniquitous decrees, and to the writers that prescribe oppression,

² to turn away the poor from judgment, and to take away the right from the afflicted of my people; that widows may be their prey, and that they may rob the fatherless!

³ And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the sudden destruction which shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help, and where will ye leave your glory?

⁴ They can but crouch under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

¹¹ — shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her images?

¹² And it shall come to pass, when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and upon Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stoutness of heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.

¹³ For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am intelligent; and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and, like a valiant man, I have brought down them that sit on thrones;

¹⁴ and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples, and as one gathereth forsaken eggs, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or chirped.

¹⁵ — Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? shall the saw magnify itself against him that wieldeth it? As if the rod should wield them that lift it up; as if the staff should lift up him who is not wood!

¹⁶ Therefore shall the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness, and under his glory he shall kindle a burning, like the burning of a fire:

¹⁷ and the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briars in one day,

¹⁸ and it shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body; and they shall be as when a sick man fainteth.

¹⁹ And the remainder of the trees of his forest shall be few: yea, a child might write them.

²⁰ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob shall no more again rely upon him that smote them; but they shall rely upon Jehovah, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

²¹ The remnant shall return, the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

²⁵ for yet a very little while, and the indignation shall be accomplished, and mine anger, in their destruction.

²⁶ And Jehovah of hosts will stir up a scourge against him, according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and his rod shall be upon the sea, and he will lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

²⁷ And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck; and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. ...

⁶ I will send him to a deceitful nation, and I will give him a charge against the people of my wrath, to take away the spoils, and to lay hold on the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

⁷ But he shall not take it so, and his heart shall not think so: but his heart shall be set to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few.

⁸ For he shall say:

⁹ Are not my princes as so many kings? is not Calano as Charcamis: and Emath as Arphad? is not Samaria as Damascus?

¹⁰ As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idol, so also their idols of Jerusalem, and of Samaria.

¹¹ Shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

¹² And it shall come to pass, that when the Lord shall have performed all his works in mount Sion, and in Jerusalem, I will visit the fruit of the proud heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of the haughtiness of his eyes.

¹³ For he hath said: By the strength of my own hand I have done it, and by my own wisdom I have understood: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have taken the spoils of the princes, and as a mighty man hath pulled down them that sat on high.

¹⁴ And my hand hath found the strength of the people as a nest; and as eggs are gathered, that are left, so have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or made the least noise.

¹⁵ Shall the axe boast itself against him that cutteth with it? or shall the saw exalt itself against him by whom it is drawn? as if a rod should lift itself up against him that lifteth it up, and a staff exalt itself, which is but wood.

¹⁶ Therefore the sovereign Lord, the Lord of hosts, shall send leanness among his fat ones: and under his glory shall be kindled a burning, as it were the burning of a fire.

¹⁷ And the light of Israel shall be as a fire, and the Holy One thereof as a flame: and his thorns and his briers shall be set on fire, and shall be devoured in one day.

¹⁸ And the glory of his forest, and of his beautiful hill, shall be consumed from the soul even to the flesh, and he shall run away through fear.

¹⁹ And they that remain of the trees of his forest shall be so few, that they shall easily be numbered, and a child shall write them down.

²⁰ And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that shall escape of the house of Jacob, shall lean no more upon him that striketh them: but they shall lean upon the Lord the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

²¹ The remnant shall be converted, the remnant, I say, of Jacob, to the mighty God.

²² For if thy people, O Israel, shall be as the sand of the sea, a remnant of them shall be converted, the consumption abridged shall overflow with justice.

²³ For the Lord God of hosts shall make a consumption, and an abridgment in the midst of all the land.

²⁴ Therefore, thus saith the Lord the God of hosts: O my people that dwellest in Sion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall strike thee with his rod, and he shall lift up his staff over thee in the way of Egypt.

²⁵ For yet a little and a very little while, and my indignation shall cease, and my wrath shall be upon their wickedness.

²⁶ And the Lord of hosts shall raise up a scourge against him, according to the slaughter of Madian in the rock of Oreb, and his rod over the sea, and he shall lift it up in the way of Egypt.

²⁷ And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall putrify at the presence of the oil.

¹ Tragedy is coming to those who pass evil decrees and who write laws to harm people.

² They pervert the legal rights of the needy, and rob justice from the poor of my people. They steal from widows and cheat orphans.

³ What are you going to do on the day you're punished, when disaster falls on you from far away? Who are you going to run to so you can get help? Where are you going to leave all your wealth?

⁴ All you'll be able to do is to bow down as prisoners, or lie among the dead! In all of this he is still angry and his hand is still raised.

⁵ Tragedy is coming to the Assyrians, even though the rod they use represents my anger and the stick they hold in their hands represents my fury!

⁶ I am sending the Assyrians against a nation that has given up on its God, against a people that make me angry. I order the Assyrians to loot them, to take their possessions, and to trample them down like mud in the street.

⁷ But this isn't what is behind the thinking of the king of Assyria. This isn't the plan he has in mind. What he wants to do is to destroy and eliminate many nations.

⁸ He says: “All my commanders are kings!

⁹ We conquered Calno like we did Carchemish; Hamath like Arpad; Samaria like Damascus.

¹⁰ I was the one who conquered these kingdoms along with the idols of their gods. These kingdoms had images of their gods that were better than those of Jerusalem and Samaria.

¹¹ Why shouldn't I do to Jerusalem and her idols just what I did to Samaria and her idols?”

¹² Once the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will punish the king of Assyria for his terrible arrogance and for the conceited look in his eyes.

¹³ For the king of Assyria says: “I have done this in my own strength. It was through my wisdom, because I'm clever. I have wiped out the boundaries of nations and looted their treasures. Like a bull I knocked their rulers off their thrones.

¹⁴ Like robbing a bird's nest, I took the wealth of the nations. Like collecting abandoned eggs, I collected the whole the earth. There wasn't a fluttering wing or an open beak, not even a chirp!”

¹⁵ Does an ax say it's more important than the person swinging it? Does a saw boast that it's greater than the person sawing with it? It would be as if a rod waved the person holding it, or a walking stick lifted up a person—who certainly wasn't wood!

¹⁶ So the Lord, the Lord Almighty, will send a disease on the king of Assyria's strong warriors that will make them waste away; a flaming fire will be set under everything he's so proud of.

¹⁷ Israel's light will become a fire, and his Holy One will become a flame. It will burn up his thorns and brambles in just one day.

¹⁸ It will totally destroy its splendid forests and orchards. Assyria will waste away, staggering off like someone sick.

¹⁹ The trees left in its forests will be so few that a child could count them.

²⁰ At that time those who are left in Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no longer trust in those who turn on them, but they will truly trust in the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.

²¹ A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob will come back to the Mighty God.

²² Israel, even though your people are as numerous as sand on the seashore, only a remnant will return. The Lord has rightly decided to destroy his people.

²³ The Lord God Almighty has rightly decided to bring destruction throughout the whole country.

²⁴ So this is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says, My people living in Zion, don't be afraid of the Assyrians who beat you with rods and hit you with clubs, just like the Egyptians did.

²⁵ Very shortly I will stop being angry with you. Then I will turn my anger on them and I will destroy them.

²⁶ The Lord Almighty will lash them with a whip, just as he did when he attacked the Midianites at the rock of Oreb. He will hold up his rod over the sea, just as he did in Egypt.

²⁷ At that time he will remove the burden from your shoulders and the yoke from your neck. The yoke will be broken because of the anointing with oil.

¹ Woe vnto them that decree wicked decrees, and write grieuous things,

² To keepe backe ye poore from iudgement, and to take away the iudgement of the poore of my people, that widowes may be their pray, and that they may spoyle the fatherlesse.

³ What will ye doe nowe in the day of visitation, and of destruction, which shall come from farre? to whom will ye flee for helpe? and where will ye leaue your glorie?

⁴ Without me euery one shall fall among them that are bound, and they shall fall downe among the slayne: yet for all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

⁵ O Asshur, the rodde of my wrath: and the staffe in their hands is mine indignation.

⁶ I will sende him to a dissembling nation, and I will giue him a charge against the people of my wrath to take the spoyle and to take the pray, and to treade them vnder feete like the mire in the streete.

⁷ But he thinketh not so, neither doeth his heart esteeme it so: but he imagineth to destroy and to cut off not a fewe nations.

⁸ For he sayeth, Are not my princes altogether Kings?

⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?

¹⁰ Like as mine hand hath founde the kingdomes of the idoles, seeing their idoles were aboue Ierusalem, and aboue Samaria:

¹¹ Shall not I, as I haue done to Samaria, and to the idoles thereof, so doe to Ierusalem and to the idoles thereof?

¹² But when the Lord hath accomplished all his worke vpon mount Zion and Ierusalem, I will visite the fruite of the proude heart of the King of Asshur, and his glorious and proud lookes,

¹³ Because he said, By ye power of mine owne hand haue I done it, and by my wisdome, because I am wise: therefore I haue remooued the borders of the people, and haue spoyled their treasures, and haue pulled downe the inhabitants like a valiant man.

¹⁴ And mine hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people, and as one gathereth egges that are left, so haue I gathered all the earth: and there was none to mooue the wing or to open the mouth, or to whisper.

¹⁵ Shall the axe boast it selfe against him that heweth therewith? or shall the sawe exalt it selfe against him that moueth it? as if the rod shoulde lift vp it selfe against him that taketh it vp, or the staffe should exalt it selfe, as it were no wood.

¹⁶ Therefore shall the Lord God of hostes send amog his fat men, leannes, and vnder his glorie he shall kindle a burning, like the burning of fire.

¹⁷ And the light of Israel shalbe as a fire, and the Holy one thereof as a flame, and it shall burne, and deuoure his thornes and his briers in one day:

¹⁸ And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitfull fieldes both soule and flesh: and he shalbe as ye fainting of a standard bearer.

¹⁹ And the rest of the trees of his forest shalbe fewe, that a childe may tell them.

²⁰ And at that day shall the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Iaakob, stay no more vpon him that smote them, but shall stay vpon ye Lord, ye Holy one of Israel in trueth.

²¹ The remnant shall returne, euen the remnant of Iaakob vnto the mightie God.

²² For though thy people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea, yet shall the remnant of them returne. The consumption decreed shall ouerflow with righteousnesse.

²³ For the Lord God of hostes shall make the consumption, euen determined, in the middes of all the land.

²⁴ Therefore thus saith ye Lord God of hostes, O my people, that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of Asshur: he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift vp his staffe against thee after the maner of Egypt:

²⁵ But yet a very litle time, and the wrath shall be consumed, and mine anger in their destruction.

²⁶ And ye Lord of hostes shall raise vp a scourge for him, according to the plague of Midian in the rocke Oreb: and as his staffe was vpon the Sea, so he will lift it vp after the maner of Egypt.

²⁷ And at that day shall his burden be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy necke: and the yoke shalbe destroied because of the anoynting.

¹ Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers that write iniquity;

² To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right of the poor of My people, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!

³ And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the ruin which shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help? And where will ye leave your glory?

⁴ They can do nought except crouch under the captives, and fall under the slain. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

⁵ O Asshur, the rod of Mine anger, in whose hand as a staff is Mine indignation!

⁶ I do send him against an ungodly nation, and against the people of My wrath do I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

⁷ Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few.

⁸ For he saith: 'Are not my princes all of them kings?

¹⁰ As my hand hath reached the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images did exceed them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

¹¹ Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?'

¹² Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed His whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.

¹³ For he hath said: by the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am prudent; in that I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and have brought down as one mighty the inhabitants;

¹⁴ And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

²³ For an extermination wholly determined shall the Lord, the GOD of hosts, make in the midst of all the earth.

⁷ But he deemeth it not so, and his heart doth not think so; but to destroy is in his heart, and to cut off nations not a few.

¹² Wherefore shall it come to pass, that when the Lord hath completed all his work on mount Zion and in Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the haughtiness of the king of Asshur, and the vain-glory of his proud looks.

¹³ For he hath said, “By the strength of my hand have I done it, and by my wisdom, for I have intelligence; and I have removed the boundaries of nations, and their laid-up treasures have I plundered, and brought down low those that were powerfully seated.

¹⁴ And my hand hath reached, as a bird's nest, the wealth of the people: and as one gathereth up eggs that are forsaken, have I myself gathered up all the earth: and there was not one that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or chirped.”

¹⁵ Shall the axe boast itself over him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that swingeth it? as if the rod should swing about those that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up him who is no wood.

¹⁶ Therefore will the Lord, the Eternal of hosts, send forth among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory shall be kindled a burning like the burning of a fire.

¹⁷ And the light of Israel shall become a fire, and his Holy One a flame; and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers on one day.

¹⁸ And the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body, will he destroy: and he shall be as a tree eaten to powder by the worms.

¹⁹ And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few in number, so that a boy may write them down.

²⁰ And it shall come to pass on that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall not farther lean for support upon him that smiteth them; but they shall lean upon the Lord, the Holy one of Israel, in truth.

²¹ The remnant shall return, the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

²² For though thy people Israel should be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant only of them shall return: destruction is decreed, it overfloweth with righteousness.

²³ For it is completed and decreed: the Lord, the Eternal of hosts will do it in the midst of all the land.

²⁴ Therefore thus hath said the Lord the Eternal of hosts, Be not afraid, O my people that dwellest in Zion, of Asshur, who will smite thee with the rod, and lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.

²⁶ And the Lord shall lift up a scourge over him like at the smiting of Midian at the rock of 'Oreb: and as his staff was lifted over the sea, so will he carry him off after the manner of Egypt.

²⁷ And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be removed from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be broken because of the fatness.

¹ Woe to them that write wickedness; for when they write they do write wickedness,

² perverting the cause of the poor, violently wresting the judgment of the needy ones of my people, that the widow may be a prey to them, and the orphan a spoil.

³ And what will they do in the day of visitation? for affliction shall come to you from afar: and to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory,

⁴ that ye may not fall into captivity? For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is yet exalted.

⁵ Woe to the Assyrians; the rod of my wrath, and anger are in their hands.

⁶ I will send my wrath against a sinful nation, and I will charge my people to take plunder and spoil, and to trample the cities, and to make them dust.

⁷ But he meant not thus, neither did he devise thus in his soul: but his mind shall change, and that to destroy nations not a few.

⁸ And if they should say to him, Thou alone art ruler;

⁹ then shall he say, Have I not taken the country above Babylon and Calno, where the tower was built? and have I not taken Arabia, and Damascus, and Samaria?

¹⁰ As I have taken them, I will also take all the kingdoms: howl, ye idols in Jerusalem, and in Samaria.

¹¹ For as I did to Samaria and her idols, so will I do also to Jerusalem and her idols.

¹² And it shall come to pass, when the Lord shall have finished doing all things on Mount Zion and Jerusalem, that I will visit upon the proud heart, even upon the ruler of the Assyrians, and upon the boastful haughtiness of his eyes.

¹³ For he said, I will act in strength, and in the wisdom of my understanding I will remove the boundaries of nations, and will spoil their strength.

¹⁴ And I will shake the inhabited cities: and I will take with my hand all the world as a nest: and I will even take them as eggs that have been left; and there is none that shall escape me, or contradict me.

¹⁵ Shall the axe glorify itself without him that hews with it? or shall the saw lift up itself without him that uses it, as if one should lift a rod or staff? but it shall not be so;

¹⁶ but the Lord of hosts shall send dishonor upon thine honor, and burning fire shall be kindled upon thy glory.

¹⁷ And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and he shall sanctify him with burning fire, and it shall devour the wood as grass.

¹⁸ In that day the mountains shall be consumed, and the hills, and the forests, and fire shall devour both soul and body: and he that flees shall be as one fleeing from burning flame.

¹⁹ And they that are left of them shall be a small number, and a child shall write them.

²⁰ And it shall come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel shall no more join themselves with, and the saved of Jacob shall no more trust in, them that injured them; but they shall trust in the Holy God of Israel, in truth.

²¹ And the remnant of Jacob shall trust on the mighty God.

²² And though the people of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant of them shall be saved.

²³ He will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because the Lord will make a short work in all the world.

²⁴ Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, Be not afraid, my people who dwell in Zion, of the Assyrians, because he shall smite thee with a rod: for I am bringing a stroke upon thee, that thou mayest see the way of Egypt.

²⁵ For yet a little while, and the indignation shall cease: but my wrath shall be against their council.

²⁶ And God will stir up enemies against them, according to the stroke of Midian in the place of affliction: and his wrath shall be by the way of the sea, even to the way that leads to Egypt.

²⁷ And it shall come to pass in that day, that his yoke shall be taken away from thy shoulder, and his fear from thee, and the yoke shall be destroyed from off your shoulders.

¹ Woe to them that make unrighteous decrees, That write oppressive decisions,

² To turn away the needy from judgment, And rob the poor of my people of their right; That the widows may become their prey, And that they may plunder the orphans.

³ What will ye do in the day of visitation, And in the desolation which cometh from afar? To whom will ye flee for help, And where will ye leave your glory?

⁴ Forsaken by me, they shall sink down among the prisoners, And fall among the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, But his hand is stretched out still.

⁵ Woe to the Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, The staff in whose hands is the instrument of my indignation!

⁶ Against an impious nation I will send him, And against a people under my wrath I will give him a charge To gather the spoil, and seize the prey, And to trample them under foot like the mire of the streets.

⁷ But he doth not so purpose, And his heart doth not so intend; But to destroy is in his heart, And to cut off a multitude of nations.

⁸ For he saith, “Are not my princes altogether kings?

⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?

¹⁰ As my hand hath seized the kingdoms of the idols, Whose graven images were more numerous than those of Jerusalem and Samaria,

¹¹ Behold! as I have done to Samaria and her idols, So will I do to Jerusalem and her images.”

¹² But when the Lord hath accomplished his whole work upon Mount Zion and Jerusalem, Then will he punish the fruit of the proud heart of the king of Assyria, And the arrogance of his lofty eyes.

¹³ For he hath said: “By the strength of my hand I have done it, And by my wisdom; for I am wise; I have removed the bounds of nations, I have plundered their treasures; As a hero have I brought down them that sat upon thrones.

¹⁴ The riches of the nations hath my hand seized, as a nest; As one gathereth eggs that have been left, So have I gathered the whole world. And there was none that moved the wing, Or that opened the beak, or that chirped.”

¹⁵ Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth with it? Or shall the saw magnify itself against him that moveth it? As if the rod should wield him that lifteth it! As if the staff should lift up him that is not wood!

¹⁸ The glory of his forest and of his fruitful field From the spirit even to the flesh shall he consume; It shall be with them as when a sick man fainteth.

¹⁹ The remaining trees of the forest shall be few, So that a child may write them down.

¹⁸ He will consume the glory of his forest and of his fruitful field, both soul and body. It will be as when a standard bearer faints.

¹⁹ The remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child could write their number.

²⁰ It will come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel, and those who have escaped from the house of Jacob will no more again lean on him who struck them, but shall lean on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

²¹ A remnant will return, even the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.

²² For though your people, Israel, are like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

²³ For the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, will make a full end, and that determined, throughout all the earth.

²⁴ Therefore the Lord, the LORD of Hosts, says, “My people who dwell in Zion, don’t be afraid of the Assyrian, though he strike you with the rod, and lift up his staff against you, as Egypt did.

²⁵ For yet a very little while, and the indignation against you will be accomplished, and my anger will be directed to his destruction.”

²⁶ The LORD of Hosts will stir up a scourge against him, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb. His rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it up like he did against Egypt.

²⁷ It will happen in that day that his burden will depart from off your shoulder, and his yoke from off your neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing oil.

¹ Woe to them that make wicked laws, and they writing have written unrightfulness or unrightwiseness,

² for to oppress poor men in doom, and to do violence to the cause of meek men of my people; that widows shall be the prey of them, and that they should ravish fatherless children.

³ What shall ye do in the day of visitation, and of wretchedness coming from a far? To whose help shall ye flee? and where shall ye leave your glory,

⁴ that ye be not bowed down under bond, and fall not down with slain men? On all these things his strong vengeance is not turned away, but yet his hand is stretched forth.

⁵ Woe to Assur, he is the rod and staff of my strong vengeance; mine indignation is in the hand of them.

⁶ I shall send him to a false folk, and I shall command to him against the people of my strong vengeance; that he take away the spoils, and part prey, and that he set or put that people into defouling, as the fen of streets.

⁷ Forsooth he shall not deem so, and his heart shall not guess so, but his heart shall be for to all-break, and to the slaying of many folks.

⁸ For he shall say, Whether my princes be not kings altogether?

⁹ Whether not as Carchemish, so Calno; and as Arpad, so Hamath? whether not as Damascus, so Samaria?

¹⁰ As mine hand found the realms of idols, so and the simulacra of them of Jerusalem and of Samaria.

¹¹ Whether not as I did to Samaria, and to the idols thereof, so I shall do to Jerusalem, and to the simulacra thereof?

¹² And it shall be, when the Lord hath ful filled all his works in the hill or the mount of Zion and in Jerusalem, I shall visit on the fruit of the great doing heart of the king of Assur, and on the glory of the highness of his eyes.

¹³ For he said, I have done in the strength of mine hand, and I have understood in my wisdom; and I have taken away the ends of the peoples, and I have robbed the princes of them, and I as a mighty man have drawn down them that sat on high.

¹⁴ And mine hand found the strength of peoples as a nest, and as eggs be gathered together that be forsaken, so I gathered together all the earth; and none there was that moved a feather, and opened the mouth, and grutched.

¹⁵ Whether an ax shall have glory against him that cutteth with it? either a saw shall be enhanced against him of whom it is drawn? as if a rod is raised against him that raiseth it, and a staff is enhanced, which soothly is a tree.

¹⁶ For this thing the lordly governor, Lord of hosts, shall send thinness into the fat men of him; and his glory kindled under shall burn as the burning of fire.

¹⁷ And the light of Israel shall be in fire, and the Holy of it in flame; and the thorn of him and briar shall be kindled and devoured in one day.

¹⁸ And the glory of his forest, and of his Carmel, shall be wasted, from the soul unto the flesh; and he shall be fleeing away for dread.

¹⁹ And the remnants of the trees of his forest shall be numbered for fewness, and a child shall write them.

²⁰ And it shall be in that day, the remnant of Israel, and they that fled of the house of Jacob, shall not add for to trust on him that smiteth them; but it shall trust on the holy Lord of Israel, in truth.

²¹ The remnants, I say, the remnants of Jacob, shall be converted to the strong Lord.

²² For why, Israel, if thy people is as the gravel of the sea, the remnants shall be turned thereof; an ending made short shall make rightfulness or rightwiseness to be plenteous.

²³ For why the Lord God of hosts shall make an ending and abridging, in the midst of all earth.

²⁴ For this thing the Lord God of hosts saith these things, My people, the dweller of Zion, do not thou dread of Assur, for he shall smite thee in a rod, and he shall raise up his staff on thee in the way of Egypt.

²⁵ For why yet a little, and a little, and mine indignation and my strong vengeance shall be ended on the great trespass of them.

²⁶ And the Lord of hosts shall raise up a scourge on him by the vengeance of Midian in the stone of Oreb, and by his rod on the sea; and he shall raise that rod in the way of Egypt.

²⁷ And it shall be in that day, his burden shall be taken away from thy shoulder, and his yoke from thy neck; and the yoke shall wax all rotten from the face of oil.

³ What shall ye do in the day of visitation, and of wretchedness coming from a far? To whose help shall ye flee? and where shall ye leave your glory,

⁴ that ye be not bowed down under bond, and fall not down with slain men? (or so that ye be not bowed down in slavery, and fall not down with the slain?) On all these things his strong vengeance is not turned away, but yet his hand is stretched forth.

⁵ Woe to Assur, he is the rod and staff of my strong vengeance; mine indignation is in the hand of them. (Woe to the Assyrian, he is the rod and the staff of my strong vengeance; yea, my anger is in his hands.)

⁶ I shall send him to a false folk, and I shall command to him against the people of my strong vengeance; that he take away the spoils, and part prey, and that he set that people into defouling, as the fen of streets. (I shall send him to a godless nation, and I shall command to him against the people for whom I have strong vengeance; yea, that he bring down that people into defiling, to be like the dirt, or the mire, in the streets.)

⁷ Forsooth he shall not deem so, and his heart shall not guess so, but his heart shall be for to all-break, and to the slaying of many folks. (But he shall not stop there, and his heart shall not be content with only them, but his heart, or his plans, shall be to altogether break, and to kill, many nations.)

⁸ For he shall say, Whether my princes be not kings (al)together? (For he shall say, Shall not all my princes, or all my leaders, be kings?)

⁹ Whether not as Carchemish, so Calno; and as Arpad, so Hamath? whether not as Damascus, so Samaria?

¹⁰ As mine hand found the realms of idol(s), so and the simulacra of them of Jerusalem and of Samaria. (As my hands found the kingdoms that be full of idols, so now also the idols of those who be in Jerusalem and Samaria.)

¹¹ Whether not as I did to Samaria, and to the idols thereof, so I shall do to Jerusalem, and to the simulacra thereof? (Whether not as I did to Samaria, and to their idols, so now I shall also do to Jerusalem, and their idols?)

¹² And it shall be, when the Lord hath ful filled all his works in the hill of Zion and in Jerusalem, I shall visit on the fruit of the great doing heart of the king of Assur, and on the glory of the highness of his eyes. (And it shall be, when the Lord hath fulfilled all his works on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, I shall punish the king of Assyria for the fruit of the great doing of his heart, and for the glory of the highness of his eyes.)

(For he said, I have done by the strength of my own hand, and I have understood by my own wisdom; and I have done away the borders of the nations, and I have robbed their leaders, and I, a mighty man, have drawn down those who sat on high.)

¹⁴ And mine hand found the strength of peoples as a nest, and as eggs be gathered together that be forsaken, so I gathered together all the earth; and none there was that moved a feather, and opened the mouth, and grutched. (And my hand found the wealth of the peoples like a nest, and like eggs that be abandoned be gathered together, so I gathered together all the lands; and there was no one who moved a feather, or opened his mouth, or grumbled.)

¹⁸ And the glory of his forest, and of his Carmel, shall be wasted, from the soul unto the flesh; and he shall be fleeing away for dread. (And the glory of his forest, and of his plentiful land, shall be destroyed, from the soul unto the flesh; and he shall flee away out of fear.)

²⁰ And it shall be in that day, the remnant of Israel, and they that fled of the house of Jacob, shall not add for to trust on him that smiteth them; but it shall trust on the holy Lord of Israel, in truth. (And it shall be on that day, that the remnant of Israel, yea, they of the house of Jacob who fled, shall no longer trust him who striketh them; but they shall truly trust the Holy Lord of Israel.)

²¹ The remnants, I say, the remnants of Jacob, shall be converted to the strong Lord. (The remnants, I say, the remnants of Jacob, shall turn again to the strong Lord or shall return to the strong Lord.)

²² For why, Israel, if thy people is as the gravel of the sea, the remnants shall be turned (again) thereof; an ending made short shall make rightfulness to be plenteous. (Because, O Israel, though thy people be as innumerable as the sand of the sea, only a remnant shall turn again to him or shall return to him; and so a shortened ending shall make justice to be plentiful.)

²³ For why the Lord God of hosts shall make an ending and abridging, in the midst of all earth. (For the Lord God of hosts shall make an ending and a shortening, that is, destruction, over all the earth.)

²⁴ For this thing the Lord God of hosts saith these things, My people, the dweller of Zion, do not thou dread of Assur, for he shall smite thee in a rod, and he shall raise up his staff on thee in the way of Egypt. (For this reason the Lord God of hosts saith these things, My people, the inhabitants of Zion, do not thou fear the Assyrians, though they shall strike thee with their rod, and they shall raise up their staff against thee, like the Egyptians did.)

¹ Woe to those decreeing decrees of iniquity, And writers who have prescribed perverseness.

² To turn aside from judgment the poor, And to take violently away the judgment Of the afflicted of My people, That widows may be their prey, That the fatherless they may spoil.

³ And what do ye at a day of inspection? And at desolation? — from afar it cometh. Near whom do ye flee for help? And where do ye leave your honour?

⁴ Without Me it hath bowed down In the place of a bound one, And in the place of the slain they fall. With all this not turned back hath His anger, And still His hand is stretched out.

⁵ Woe to Asshur, a rod of Mine anger, And a staff in their hand is Mine indignation.

⁶ Against a profane nation I send him, And concerning a people of My wrath I charge him, To spoil spoil, and to seize prey, And to make it a treading-place as the clay of out places.

⁷ And he — he thinketh not so, And his heart reckoneth not so, For — to destroy is in his heart, And to cut off nations not a few.

⁸ For he saith, 'Are not my princes altogether kings?

⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?

¹⁰ As my hand hath got to the kingdoms of a worthless thing, and their graven images, Greater than Jerusalem and than Samaria,

¹¹ Do I not — as I have done to Samaria, And to her worthless things, So do to Jerusalem and to her grievous things?

¹² And it hath come to pass, When the Lord doth fulfil all His work In mount Zion and in Jerusalem, I see concerning the fruit of the greatness Of the heart of the king of Asshur. And concerning the glory of the height of his eyes.

¹³ For he hath said, 'By the power of my hand I have wrought, And by my wisdom, for I have been intelligent, And I remove borders of the peoples, And their chief ones I have spoiled, And I put down as a mighty one the inhabitants,

¹⁴ And my hand as to a nest Getteth to the wealth of the peoples, And as a gathering of forsaken eggs All the earth I — I have gathered, And there hath not been one moving wing, Or opening mouth, or whispering.'

¹⁵ — Doth the axe glorify itself Against him who is hewing with it? Doth the saw magnify itself Against him who is shaking it? As a rod waving those lifting it up! As a staff lifting up that which is not wood!

¹⁶ Therefore doth the Lord, the Lord of Hosts, Send among his fat ones leanness, And under his honour He kindleth a burning As the burning of a fire.

¹⁷ And the light of Israel hath been for a fire, And his Holy One for a flame, And it hath burned, and devoured his thorn And his brier in one day.

¹⁸ And the honour of his forest, and his fruitful field, From soul even unto flesh He doth consume, And it hath been as the fainting of a standard-bearer.

¹⁹ And the rest of the trees of his forest are few, And a youth doth write them.

²⁰ And it hath come to pass, in that day, The remnant of Israel, And the escaped of the house of Jacob, Do not add any more to lean on its smiter, And have leant on Jehovah, The Holy One of Israel, in truth.

²¹ A remnant returneth — a remnant of Jacob, Unto the Mighty God.

²² For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, A remnant doth return of it, A consumption determined, Overflowing with righteousness.

²³ For a consumption that is determined, The Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, Is making in the midst of all the land.

²⁴ Therefore, thus said the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, 'Be not afraid, my people, inhabiting Zion, because of Asshur, With a rod he doth smite thee, And his staff lifteth up against thee, in the way of Egypt.

²⁵ For yet a very little, And the indignation hath been completed, And Mine anger by their wearing out.

²⁶ And awaking for him is Jehovah of Hosts, A scourge like the smiting of Midian at the rock Oreb, And his rod is over the sea, And he hath lifted it in the way of Egypt.

²⁷ And it hath come to pass, in that day, Turned is his burden from off thy shoulder, And his yoke from off thy neck, And destroyed hath been the yoke, because of prosperity.
