Ecclesiastes 9:3-8 in English

³ This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

⁴ For to him that is joined with all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

⁵ For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

⁶ As well their love, as their hatred and their envy, is perished long ago; neither have they any more a portion for ever in anything that is done under the sun.

⁷ Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God hath already accepted thy works.

⁸ Let thy garments be always white; and let not thy head lack oil.

³ It seems wrong that the same thing happens to everyone on this earth: Everyone dies EUP. Furthermore, people's inner beings are full of evil. People do foolish things while they are alive, and then they die and join those who are already dead.

⁴ While we are alive, we confidently expect that good things will happen to us. We despise dogs, but it is better to be a dog that is alive than to be a majestic lion that is dead.

⁵ We who are alive know that some day we will die, but dead people do not know anything. Dead people do not receive any more rewards, and people soon forget them.

⁶ While they were alive, they loved some people, they hated some people, they envied some people, but that all ends when they die. They will never again be a part of anything that happens here on the earth.

⁷ So I say, be joyful DOU while you eat your food and drink your wine, because that is what God wants you to do.

⁸ Wear nice MTY clothes and make your face look nice.

⁷ Come, take your bread with joy, and your wine with a glad heart. God has taken pleasure in your works.

⁸ Let your clothing be white at all times, and let not your head be without oil.

⁶ Their love also, and their hatred, and their envy are all perished, neither have they any part in this world, and in the work that is done under the sun.

³ This is just so wrong—that everyone here on earth should suffer the same fate! On top of that, people's minds are filled with evil. They spend their lives thinking about stupid things, and then they die.

⁴ But the living still have hope—a live dog is better than a dead lion!

⁵ The living are conscious of the fact that they're going to die, but the dead have no consciousness of anything. They don't receive any further benefit; they're forgotten.

⁶ Their love, hate, and envy—it's all gone. They have no further part in anything that happens here on earth.

⁷ So go ahead and eat your food, and enjoy it. Drink your wine with a happy heart. That's what God intends that you should do.

⁸ Always wear smart clothes and look good.

³ This is euill among all that is done vnder the sunne, that there is one condition to all, and also the heart of the sonnes of men is full of euill, and madnes is in their heartes whiles they liue, and after that, they goe to the dead.

⁴ Surely whosoeuer is ioyned to all ye liuing, there is hope: for it is better to a liuing dog, then to a dead lyon.

⁵ For the liuing knowe that they shall dye, but the dead knowe nothing at all: neither haue they any more a rewarde: for their remembrance is forgotten.

⁶ Also their loue, and their hatred, and their enuie is now perished, and they haue no more portion for euer, in all that is done vnder the sunne.

⁷ Goe, eate thy bread with ioy, and drinke thy wine with a cheerefull heart: for God nowe accepteth thy workes.

⁸ At all times let thy garments be white, and let not oyle be lacking vpon thine head.

⁴ For anyone who is united to all the living, there is hope, just as a living dog is better than a dead lion.

⁵ For living people know they will die, but the dead do not know anything. They no longer have any reward because their memory is forgotten.

⁶ Their love, hatred, and envy have vanished long ago. They will never have a place again in anything done under the sun.

⁶ Also their love, and hatred, and envy, perished altogether; and they have no part in this world, and in the work that is done under the sun.

⁷ Therefore go thou, just man, and eat thy bread in gladness, and drink thy wine with joy; for thy works please God. (And so, O righteous person, go thou, and eat thy bread with happiness, and drink thy wine with joy; for thy works please God.)
