Ecclesiastes 9:3-5 in English

³ This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

⁴ For to him that is joined with all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

⁵ For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

³ It seems wrong that the same thing happens to everyone on this earth: Everyone dies EUP. Furthermore, people's inner beings are full of evil. People do foolish things while they are alive, and then they die and join those who are already dead.

⁴ While we are alive, we confidently expect that good things will happen to us. We despise dogs, but it is better to be a dog that is alive than to be a majestic lion that is dead.

⁵ We who are alive know that some day we will die, but dead people do not know anything. Dead people do not receive any more rewards, and people soon forget them.

³ This is an evil among all that is done under the sun, that one thing befalleth all: yea, also the heart of the children of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live; and after that, they have to go to the dead.

⁴ For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope; for a living dog is better than a dead lion.

⁵ For the living know that they shall die; but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

³ This is a very great evil among all things that are done under the sun, that the same things happen to all men: whereby also the hearts of the children of men are filled with evil, and with contempt while they live, and afterwards they shall be brought down to hell.

⁴ There is no man that liveth always, or that hopeth for this: a living dog is better than a dead lion.

⁵ For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know nothing more, neither have they a reward any more: for the memory of them is forgotten.

³ This is just so wrong—that everyone here on earth should suffer the same fate! On top of that, people's minds are filled with evil. They spend their lives thinking about stupid things, and then they die.

⁴ But the living still have hope—a live dog is better than a dead lion!

⁵ The living are conscious of the fact that they're going to die, but the dead have no consciousness of anything. They don't receive any further benefit; they're forgotten.

³ This is euill among all that is done vnder the sunne, that there is one condition to all, and also the heart of the sonnes of men is full of euill, and madnes is in their heartes whiles they liue, and after that, they goe to the dead.

⁴ Surely whosoeuer is ioyned to all ye liuing, there is hope: for it is better to a liuing dog, then to a dead lyon.

⁵ For the liuing knowe that they shall dye, but the dead knowe nothing at all: neither haue they any more a rewarde: for their remembrance is forgotten.

⁴ For anyone who is united to all the living, there is hope, just as a living dog is better than a dead lion.

⁵ For living people know they will die, but the dead do not know anything. They no longer have any reward because their memory is forgotten.

⁵ For they that live know that they shall die; but dead men know nothing more, neither have meed further; for their mind is given to forgetting.

³ This thing is the worst among all things, that be done under the sun, that the same thing befall to all men; wherefore and the hearts of the sons of men be filled with malice and with despising in their life; and after these things, they shall be led down into hells. (This thing is the worst among all things, that be done under the sun, that the same thing befall to all people; yea, the hearts of the sons and daughters of men be filled with malice and despising during their lives; and then after these things, they go down to Sheol, or the land of the dead, or they go down to hell.)

⁴ No man there is, that liveth ever, and that hath trust of this thing; better is a quick dog than a dead lion. (But for everyone who liveth, there is still hope; yea, a living dog is better than a dead lion.)

⁵ For they that live know that they shall die; but dead men know nothing more, neither have meed further; for their mind is given to forgetting. (For they who live at least know that they shall die; but the dead know nothing, nor have any further reward; even the memory of them is forgotten.)

³ This is an evil among all that hath been done under the sun, that one event is to all, and also the heart of the sons of man is full of evil, and madness is in their heart during their life, and after it — unto the dead.

⁴ But to him who is joined unto all the living there is confidence, for to a living dog it is better than to the dead lion.
