Ecclesiastes 7:12-27 in English

¹² For wisdom is a defence, even as money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom preserveth the life of him that hath it.

¹³ Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

¹⁴ In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider; yea, God hath made the one side by side with the other, to the end that man should not find out anything that shall be after him.

¹⁵ All this have I seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his evil-doing.

¹⁶ Be not righteous overmuch; neither make thyself overwise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?

¹⁷ Be not overmuch wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?

¹⁸ It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from that withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth from them all.

¹⁹ Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers that are in a city.

²⁰ Surely there is not a righteous man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

²¹ Also take not heed unto all words that are spoken, lest thou hear thy servant curse thee;

²² for oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

²³ All this have I proved in wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

²⁴ That which is, is far off and exceeding deep; who can find it out?

²⁵ I turned about, and my heart was set to know and to search out, and to seek wisdom and the reason of things, and to know that wickedness is folly, and that foolishness is madness.

²⁶ And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and whose hands are bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

²⁷ Behold, this have I found, saith the Preacher, laying one thing to another, to find out the account;

¹² For wisdom in its shadow is as the shadow of silver: and the excellence of the knowledge of wisdom will give life to him that has it.

¹³ Behold the works of God: for who shall be able to straighten him whom God has made crooked?

¹² We are sometimes protected by being wise like we are sometimes protected by having a lot of money, but being wise is better than having a lot of money, because being wise prevents us from doing foolish things that would cause us to die.

¹³ Think carefully about what God has done. Certainly no one can RHQ cause to become straight the things that God has caused to be crooked.

¹⁴ When things are going well for you, be happy, and when things are not going well for you, remember that God is the one who causes good things to happen and who also causes disasters.

¹⁵ During all the time that I have been alive I have seen a lot of HYP things that seem senseless. I have seen righteous people die while they are still young, and I have seen wicked people remain alive for a very long time in spite of their continuing to be wicked.

¹⁶ So do not think that you are very righteous and do not think that you are very wise, because if you think those things, you will destroy yourself.

¹⁷ If you do what is evil or do what is foolish, you might die while you are still young.

¹⁸ Continue to avoid doing what is evil and doing what is foolish; avoid doing both of those things by continually revering God.

¹⁹ If you are wise, you will be more powerful/influential than the ten most powerful/influential men in your city.

²⁰ There is no one in this world who always does what is right and who never sins.

²¹ Do not pay attention IDM to everything that people say, because if you do that, you might hear your servant cursing you.

²² You know that you have also cursed other people.

²³ I said to myself that I would use my wisdom to study all the things that I have written about, but I was not able to do it successfully.

²⁴ Wisdom seems to be far from me; there is no one RHQ who can truly understand everything.

²⁵ But I decided to investigate things and by my wisdom try to understand the reason for everything. I also wanted to understand why people act wickedly and why they act very foolishly.

²⁶ One thing I learned was that ◄allowing a woman to seduce you/having sex with a woman to whom you are not married► is worse than dying. A woman who tries to seduce men is as dangerous as a trap MET. If you allow her to put her arms around you, it will be as though she will be fastening you with chains. Women like that will capture sinful men, but men who please God will escape from such women.

²⁷ This is what I have learned: I tried to learn more and more about things to try to find out the reason for everything,

¹³ Give thought to the work of God. Who will make straight what he has made bent?

¹⁴ In the day of wealth have joy, but in the day of evil take thought: God has put the one against the other, so that man may not be certain what will be after him.

¹⁵ These two have I seen in my life which is to no purpose: a good man coming to his end in his righteousness, and an evil man whose days are long in his evil-doing.

¹⁶ Be not given overmuch to righteousness and be not over-wise. Why let destruction come on you?

¹⁷ Be not evil overmuch, and be not foolish. Why come to your end before your time?

¹⁸ It is good to take this in your hand and not to keep your hand from that; he who has the fear of God will be free of the two.

¹⁹ Wisdom makes a wise man stronger than ten rulers in a town.

²⁰ There is no man on earth of such righteousness that he does good and is free from sin all his days.

²¹ Do not give ear to all the words which men say, for fear of hearing the curses of your servant.

²² Your heart has knowledge how frequently others have been cursed by you.

²³ All this I have put to the test by wisdom; I said, I will be wise, but it was far from me.

²⁴ Far off is true existence, and very deep; who may have knowledge of it?

²⁵ I gave my mind to knowledge and to searching for wisdom and the reason of things, and to the discovery that sin is foolish, and that to be foolish is to be without one's senses.

²⁶ And I saw a thing more bitter than death, even the woman whose heart is full of tricks and nets, and whose hands are as bands. He with whom God is pleased will get free from her, but the sinner will be taken by her.

²⁷ Look! this I have seen, said the Preacher, taking one thing after another to get the true account,

¹² For wisdom is a defence as money is a defence; but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom maketh them that possess it to live.

¹³ Consider the work of God; for who can make straight what he hath made crooked?

¹⁴ In the day of prosperity enjoy good, and in the day of adversity consider: God hath also set the one beside the other, to the end that man should find out nothing of what shall be after him.

¹⁴ Consider the works of God, that no man can correct whom he hath despised.

¹⁵ In the good day enjoy good things, and beware beforehand of the evil day: for God hath made both the one and the other, that man may not find against him any just complaint.

¹⁶ These things also I saw in the days of my vanity: A just man perisheth in his justice, and a wicked man liveth a long time in his wickedness.

¹⁷ Be not over just: and be not more wise than is necessary, lest thou become stupid.

¹⁸ Be not overmuch wicked: and be not foolish, lest thou die before thy time.

¹⁹ It is good that thou shouldst hold up the just, yea and from him withdraw not thy hand: for he that feareth God, neglecteth nothing.

²² But do not apply thy heart to all words that are spoken: lest perhaps thou hear thy servant reviling thee.

²³ For thy conscience knoweth that thou also hast often spoken evil of others.

²⁴ I have tried all things in wisdom. I have said: I will be wise: and it departed farther from me,

²⁵ Much more than it was: it is a great depth, who shall find it out?

²⁶ I have surveyed all things with my mind, to know, and consider, and seek out wisdom and reason: and to know the wickedness of the fool, and the error of the imprudent:

²⁷ And I have found a woman more bitter than death, who is the hunter’s snare, and her heart is a net, and her hands are bands. He that pleaseth God shall escape from her: but he that is a sinner, shall be caught by her.

¹² For wisdom provides security, as does money, but the advantage for those who have wisdom is that they are kept safe and sound!

¹³ Think about what God does. If he makes something bent, you can't straighten it!

¹⁴ On a good day, be happy. When a bad day comes, stop and think. God made each day, so you don't know what will happen to you next.

¹⁵ Throughout my life I've seen so much that is hard to understand. Good people who die young despite doing what is right, and wicked people who live long evil lives.

¹⁶ Don't think you can make yourself right by a lot of religious observance, and don't pretend to be so wise. Do you want to destroy yourself?

¹⁷ On the other hand, don't decide to live an evil life—don't be a fool! Why die before your time?

¹⁸ You ought to keep in mind these warnings. Those who follow God will be sure to avoid both.

¹⁹ Wisdom gives a wise person greater power than ten town councilors.

²⁰ There's not one good person in all the world who always does what is right and never sins.

²¹ Don't take to heart everything that people say, otherwise you may hear your servant talking badly about you,

²² for you know how many times you yourself have talked badly about others!

²³ I have examined all this using the principles of wisdom. I told myself, “I will think wisely.” But wisdom eluded me.

²⁴ Everything that exists is beyond our grasp—too deep for our understanding. Who can comprehend it?

²⁵ I turned my thoughts to discover, investigate, and to find out more about wisdom and what makes sense. I wanted to know more about how stupid evil really is, and how ridiculous it is to be a fool.

²⁶ I discovered something more horrible than death: foolishness like a woman who tries to entrap you, who wants to use her mind and hands to catch you and tie you up. Those who follow God will not be caught, but sinners will fall into her trap.

²⁷ This is what I discovered after putting two and two together to try and find out what it all meant, says the Teacher.

¹² Say not thou, Why is it that the former dayes were better then these? for thou doest not enquire wisely of this thing.

¹³ Wisedome is good with an inheritance, and excellent to them that see the sunne.

¹⁴ For man shall rest in the shadowe of wisedome, and in the shadowe of siluer: but the excellencie of the knowledge of wisedome giueth life to the possessers thereof.

¹⁵ Beholde the worke of God: for who can make straight that which he hath made crooked?

¹⁶ In the day of wealth be of good comfort, and in the day of affliction consider: God also hath made this contrary to that, to the intent that man shoulde finde nothing after him.

¹⁷ I haue seene all things in the dayes of my vanitie: there is a iust man that perisheth in his iustice, and there is a wicked man that continueth long in his malice.

¹⁸ Be not thou iust ouermuch, neither make thy selfe ouerwise: wherefore shouldest thou be desolate?

²⁶ And I found a woman bitterer than death, the which is (like) the snare of hunters, and her heart is (like) a net, and her hands be (like) bonds; he that pleaseth God shall escape her, but he that is a sinner, shall be taken of her. (And I found a woman more bitter than death, who is like a hunter’s snare, and her heartis like a net, and her hands be like bonds; he who pleaseth God shall escape her, but he who is a sinner shall be caught by her.)

²⁷ Lo! I found this, said Ecclesiastes, (concerning) one (thing) and (an)other, that I should find (the) reason,

¹² For wisdom is a defense, money is a defence, And the advantage of the knowledge of wisdom is, She reviveth her possessors.

¹³ See the work of God, For who is able to make straight that which He made crooked?

¹⁴ In a day of prosperity be in gladness, And in a day of evil consider. Also this over-against that hath God made, To the intent that man doth not find anything after him.

¹⁵ The whole I have considered in the days of my vanity. There is a righteous one perishing in his righteousness, and there is a wrong-doer prolonging himself in his wrong.

¹⁶ Be not over-righteous, nor show thyself too wise, why art thou desolate?

¹⁷ Do not much wrong, neither be thou a fool, why dost thou die within thy time?

¹⁸ It is good that thou dost lay hold on this, and also, from that withdrawest not thy hand, for whoso is fearing God goeth out with them all.

¹⁹ The wisdom giveth strength to a wise man, more than wealth the rulers who have been in a city.

²⁰ Because there is not a righteous man on earth that doth good and sinneth not.

²¹ Also to all the words that they speak give not thy heart, that thou hear not thy servant reviling thee.

²² For many times also hath thy heart known that thou thyself also hast reviled others.

²³ All this I have tried by wisdom; I have said, 'I am wise,' and it is far from me.

²⁴ Far off is that which hath been, and deep, deep, who doth find it?

²⁵ I have turned round, also my heart, to know and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and reason, and to know the wrong of folly, and of foolishness the madness.

²⁶ And I am finding more bitter than death, the woman whose heart is nets and snares, her hands are bands; the good before God escapeth from her, but the sinner is captured by her.

²⁷ See, this I have found, said the Preacher, one to one, to find out the reason
