Daniel 2:14-23 in English

¹⁴ Then Daniel returned answer with counsel and prudence to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, who was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon;

¹⁵ he answered and said to Arioch the king’s captain, Wherefore is the decree so urgent from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

¹⁶ And Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would appoint him a time, and he would show the king the interpretation.

¹⁷ Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:

¹⁸ that they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his companions should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

²⁰ Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever; for wisdom and might are his.

²¹ And he changeth the times and the seasons; he removeth kings, and setteth up kings; he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that have understanding;

²² he revealeth the deep and secret things; he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

²³ I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast now made known unto me what we desired of thee; for thou hast made known unto us the king’s matter.

¹⁴ Then Daniel answered with counsel and prudence to Arioch the captain of the royal guard, who was gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylon; saying,

¹⁵ Chief magistrate of the king, therefore has the preemptory command proceeded from the king? So Arioch made known the matter to Daniel.

¹⁶ And Daniel entreated the king to give him time, and that he might thus declare to the king the interpretation of it.

¹⁷ So Daniel went into his house, and made known the matter to Ananias, and Misael, and Azarias, his friends.

¹⁸ And they sought mercies from the God of heaven concerning this mystery; that Daniel and his friends might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night; and Daniel blessed the God of heaven, and said,

²⁰ May the name of God be blessed from everlasting and to everlasting: for wisdom and understanding are his.

²¹ And he changes times and seasons: he appoints kings, and removes them, giving wisdom to the wise, and prudence to them that have understanding:

²² he reveals deep and secret matters; knowing what is in darkness, and the light is with him.

²³ I give thanks to you, and praise you, O God of my fathers, for you have given me wisdom and power, and has made known to me the things which we asked of you; and you have made known to me the king's vision.

¹⁴ Arioch, the commander of the king's guards, came to kill us. But I spoke to him very wisely and tactfully/skillfully.

¹⁵ I asked Arioch, “Why has the king made such a harsh/terrible decree?” So Arioch told me all that had happened because of the king's dream.

¹⁶ I immediately went to talk to the king and requested that the king give me some time, so that I could find out what the dream was and what the dream meant.

¹⁷ Then I went home, and I told my friends, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, what had happened.

¹⁸ I urged them to ask God, who lives/rules in heaven, to have mercy on us by telling us the secret meaning of what the king dreamed, in order that we and the other wise men in Babylon would not be executed.

¹⁹ And that night God gave to me a vision in which he revealed the secret. Then I praised God,

²⁰ saying, “We should praise God MTY forever, because only he truly is wise and powerful.

²¹ He determines what events will happen through the years. He removes some kings and gives their authority to new kings. He is the one who causes people to become wise and enables those who study to understand many things.

²² He reveals things that are very mysterious; he is surrounded by light, but he knows things that are hidden as though they were in the darkness.

²³ God, whom my ancestors worshiped, I thank you and I praise you, because you have caused me to be wise and made me strong. You have told me what my friends and I asked you to tell us; and you have revealed to us what the king demanded to know.”

¹⁴ Then Daniel answered with counsel and prudence to Arioch the captain of the royal guard, who was gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylon; saying,

¹⁴ Then Daniel gave an answer with wisdom and good sense to Arioch, the captain of the king's armed men, who had gone out to put to death the wise men of Babylon;

¹⁵ He made answer and said to Arioch, O captain of the king, why is the king's order so cruel? Then Arioch gave Daniel an account of the business.

¹⁶ And Daniel went in and made a request to the king to give him time and he would make clear the sense of his dream to the king.

¹⁷ And Daniel went to his house and gave his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah the news:

¹⁸ So that they might make a request for the mercy of the God of heaven in the question of this secret; so that Daniel and his friends might not come to destruction with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then the secret was made clear to Daniel in a vision of the night. And Daniel gave blessing to the God of heaven.

²⁰ And Daniel said in answer, May the name of God be praised for ever and ever: for wisdom and strength are his:

²¹ By him times and years are changed: by him kings are taken away and kings are lifted up: he gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those whose minds are awake:

²² He is the unveiler of deep and secret things: he has knowledge of what is in the dark, and the light has its living-place with him.

²³ I give you praise and worship, O God of my fathers, who have given me wisdom and strength, and have now made clear to me what we were requesting from you: for you have given us knowledge of the king's business.

¹⁴ Then Daniel answered with counsel and prudence to Arioch the chief of the king's bodyguard, who had gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon:

¹⁵ he answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so rigorous from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

¹⁶ And Daniel went in, and requested of the king that he would give him time, that he might shew the king the interpretation.

¹⁷ Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions;

¹⁸ that they would desire mercies of the God of the heavens concerning this secret; that Daniel and his companions should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of the heavens.

²⁰ Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever; For wisdom and might are his.

²¹ And it is he that changeth times and seasons; He deposeth kings, and setteth up kings; He giveth wisdom to the wise, And knowledge to them that know understanding.

²² It is he that revealeth the deep and secret things; He knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

²³ I thank thee, and I praise thee, O God of my fathers, Who hast given me wisdom and might, And hast made known unto me already what we desired of thee; For thou hast made known unto us the king's matter.

¹⁴ Then Daniel inquired concerning the law and the sentence, of Arioch the general of the king’s army, who was gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁵ And he asked him that had received the orders of the king, why so cruel a sentence was gone forth from the face of the king. And when Arioch had told the matter to Daniel,

¹⁶ Daniel went in and desired of the king, that he would give him time to resolve the question and declare it to the king.

¹⁷ And he went into his house, and told the matter to Ananias, and Misael, and Azarias his companions:

¹⁸ To the end that they should ask mercy at the face of the God of heaven concerning this secret, and that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then was the mystery revealed to Daniel by a vision in the night: and Daniel blessed the God of heaven,

²⁰ And speaking he said: Blessed be the name of the Lord from eternity and for evermore: for wisdom and fortitude are his.

²¹ And he changeth times and ages: taketh away kingdoms and establisheth them, giveth wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to them that have understanding.

²² He revealeth deep and hidden things, and knoweth what is in darkness: and light is with him.

²³ To thee, O God of our fathers, I give thanks, and I praise thee: because thou hast given me wisdom and strength: and now thou hast shewn me what we desired of thee, for thou hast made known to us, the king’s discourse.

¹⁴ Daniel approached Arioch, the commander of the imperial guard, whom the king had put in charge of the order to execute all the wise men of Babylon. Wisely and tactfully

¹⁵ Daniel asked him, “Why would the king issue such a harsh decree?” So Arioch explained to Daniel what had happened.

¹⁶ Daniel immediately went to see the king and asked for more time to explain the dream and its meaning to him.

¹⁷ Then Daniel went home and shared with Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah what was going on.

¹⁸ He told them to pray to the God of heaven, asking for help regarding this mystery, so that he and his friends would not be killed along with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ That night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven:

²⁰ “Praise the wonderful nature of God forever and ever, for he is wise and powerful.

²¹ He is in charge of time and history. He removes kings, and he sets kings in place. He gives wisdom to make people wise; he gives knowledge to people so they can understand.

²² He reveals deep, mysterious things. He knows what lies in darkness, and light lives in his presence.

²³ I give thanks and praise to you, God of my fathers, for you have given me wisdom and power. Now you have revealed to me what we asked you; you have revealed to us the king's dream.”

¹⁴ Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisedome to Arioch the Kings chiefe stewarde, which was gone foorth to put to death the wise men of Babel.

¹⁵ Yea, he answered and sayde vnto Arioch the kings captaine, Why is the sentence so hastie from the king? Then Arioch declared the thing to Daniel.

¹⁶ So Daniel went and desired the king that he woulde giue him leasure and that he woulde shewe the king the interpretation thereof.

¹⁷ The Daniel went to his house and shewed the matter to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah his companions,

¹⁸ That they should beseech the God of heauen for grace in this secrete, that Daniel and his fellowes should not perish with the rest of ye wise men of Babel.

¹⁹ Then was the secret reueiled vnto Daniel in a vision by night: therefore Daniel praysed the God of heauen.

²⁰ And Daniel answered and sayde, The Name of God be praysed for euer and euer: for wisedome and strength are his,

²¹ And hee changeth the times and seasons: he taketh away kings: he setteth vp kings: he giueth wisedome vnto the wise, and vnderstanding to those that vnderstand.

²² Hee discouereth the deepe and secrete things: he knoweth what is in darkenes, and the light dwelleth with him.

²³ I thanke thee and prayse thee, O thou God of my fathers, that thou hast giuen mee wisedome and strength, and hast shewed me nowe the thing that wee desired of thee: for thou hast declared vnto vs the kings matter.

¹⁴ Then Daniel returned answer with counsel and discretion to Arioch the captain of the king's guard, who was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon;

¹⁵ he answered and said to Arioch the king's captain: 'Wherefore is the decree so peremptory from the king?' Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

¹⁶ Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, that he might declare unto the king the interpretation.

¹⁷ Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions;

¹⁸ that they might ask mercy of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his companions should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

²⁰ Daniel spoke and said: Blessed be the name of God from everlasting even unto everlasting; for wisdom and might are His;

²¹ And He changeth the times and the seasons; He removeth kings, and setteth up kings; He giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding;

²² He revealeth the deep and secret things; He knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with Him.

²³ I thank Thee, and praise Thee, O Thou God of my fathers, who hath given me wisdom and might, and hast now made known unto me what we desired of Thee; for Thou hast made known unto us the king's matter.

¹⁴ Then made Daniel representations with intelligence and prudence to Aryoch the captain of the king's guard, who was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁵ He commenced and said to Aryoch the king's commander, Wherefore is the law so hasty from the king? Then made Aryoch the matter known to Daniel.

¹⁶ But Daniel went in, and requested of the king that he would give him time, that he might tell the interpretation to the king.

¹⁷ Then went Daniel to his house, and made the matter known to Chananyah, Mishael, and 'Azaryah, his companions.

¹⁸ In order that they might pray for mercy of the God of heaven concerning this secret: so that Daniel and his companions might not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Thereupon was the secret revealed unto Daniel in a vision of the night. Then did Daniel bless the God of heaven.

²⁰ Daniel commenced and said, May the name of God be blessed from eternity and to all eternity; for wisdom and might are his;

²¹ And he changeth times and seasons; he removeth kings, and raiseth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to those that possess understanding.

²² He it is that revealeth what is deep and secret; he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

²³ To thee, O God of my father, do I give thanks, and I praise thee, who hast given me wisdom and might, and because thou hast made known unto me what we prayed for of thee; for thou hast made known unto us the king's matter.

¹⁴ Then Daniel answered with understanding and wisdom to Arioch, the captain of the king's guard, who was gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁵ He answered and said to Arioch, the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

¹⁶ Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would show the king the interpretation.

¹⁷ Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions;

¹⁸ that they would desire mercies of the God of heaven, concerning this secret; that Daniel and his fellows should not perish, with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then was the secret revealed to Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

²⁰ Daniel spake and said: Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever! for wisdom and might are his.

²¹ And he changeth times and seasons; he removeth kings, and setteth up kings; he giveth wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to them that have understanding.

²² He revealeth deep and secret things; he knoweth what is in darkness, and light dwelleth with him.

²³ I thank thee and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known to me now what we desired of thee; for thou hast now made known to us the king's matter.

¹⁴ Then Daniel replied with prudence and discretion to Arioch the commander of the king's bodyguard, who had come to kill all those in Babylon who were known for their wisdom.

¹⁵ Daniel asked the king's commander, “Why is the king's decree so urgent?” So Arioch told Daniel what had happened.

¹⁶ Then Daniel went in and requested an appointment with the king so that he could present the interpretation to the king.

¹⁷ Then Daniel went to his house and explained to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, what had happened.

¹⁸ He urged them to seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery so that he and they might not be killed with the rest of the men of Babylon who were known for their wisdom.

¹⁹ That night the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision. Then Daniel praised the God of heaven

²⁰ and said, “Praise the name of God forever and ever; for wisdom and power belong to him.

²¹ He changes the times and seasons; he removes kings and places kings on their thrones. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.

²² He reveals the deep and hidden things because he knows what is in the darkness, and the light lives with him.

²³ God of my ancestors, I thank you and praise you for the wisdom and power you gave to me. Now you have made known to me what we asked of you, you have made known to us the matter that concerns the king.”

²³ I thank you and praise you, O God of my fathers, who have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we desired of you; for you have made known to us the king’s matter.”

¹⁴ Then Daniel returned answer with counsel and prudence to Arioch the captain of the king’s guard, who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁵ He answered Arioch the king’s captain, “Why is the decree so urgent from the king?” Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

¹⁶ Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would appoint him a time, and he would show the king the interpretation.

¹⁷ Then Daniel went to his house and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:

¹⁸ that they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret, that Daniel and his companions would not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

²⁰ Daniel answered, “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever; for wisdom and might are his.

²¹ He changes the times and the seasons. He removes kings and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who have understanding.

²² He reveals the deep and secret things. He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.

²³ I thank you and praise you, O God of my fathers, who have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we desired of you; for you have made known to us the king’s matter.”

¹⁴ Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisdom to Arioch the captain of the king's guard, who had gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon:

¹⁵ He answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, Why is the decree so hasty from the king? Then Arioch made the thing known to Daniel.

¹⁶ Then Daniel went in, and desired of the king that he would give him time, and that he would show the king the interpretation.

¹⁷ Then Daniel went to his house, and made the thing known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions:

¹⁸ That they would desire mercies of the God of heaven concerning this secret; that Daniel and his companions should not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then was the secret revealed to Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

²⁰ Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

²¹ And he changeth the times and the seasons; he removeth kings, and setteth up kings; he giveth wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

²² He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him.

²³ I thank thee, and praise thee, O thou God of my fathers, who hast given me wisdom and might, and hast made known to me now what we desired of thee: for thou hast now made known to us the king's matter.

¹⁴ Then Daniel asked of the law and sentence of Arioch, prince of the chivalry of the king that was gone out to slay the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁵ And he asked him that had taken power of the king, for what cause so cruel a sentence went out from the face of the king. Therefore when Arioch had showed the thing to Daniel,

¹⁶ Daniel entered, and prayed the king, that he should give time to him to show the solving to the king.

¹⁷ And he entered into his house, and showed the need to Hananiah, and Mishael, and Azariah, his fellows,

¹⁸ that they should ask mercy of the face of God of heaven on this sacrament, or hid truth; and that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with other wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then the private was showed to Daniel by a vision in night. And Daniel blessed God of heaven,

²⁰ and said, the name of the Lord be blessed from the world, and till into the world, for wisdom and strength be his;

²¹ and he changeth times and ages, he translateth realms and ordaineth; he giveth wisdom to wise men, and knowing to them that understand teaching, either chastising;

²² he showeth deep things and hid, and he knoweth things set in darknesses, and light is with him.

²³ God of our fathers, I acknowledge to thee, and I praise thee, for thou hast given wisdom and strength to me; and now thou hast showed to me those things which we prayed thee, for thou hast opened to us the word of the king.

¹⁴ Then Daniel asked of the law and sentence of Arioch, prince of the chivalry of the king, that was gone out to slay the wise men of Babylon. (And Daniel asked about the law and the sentence, (or the order), to Arioch, the leader of the king’s cavalry, (or of his bodyguard), who had gone out to kill the wise men of Babylon.)

¹⁵ And he asked him, that had taken power of the king, for what cause so cruel a sentence went out from the face of the king. Therefore when Arioch had showed the thing to Daniel, (And he asked him, who had received the power of life and death from the king, for what cause such a cruel order had gone out from the king. And so when Arioch had told the reason to Daniel,)

¹⁶ Daniel entered, and prayed the king, that he should give time to him to show the solving to the king. (Daniel entered in, and beseeched the king, that he would give him some time, so that he could tell the interpretation to the king. And the king agreed.)

¹⁷ And he entered into his house, and showed the need to Hananiah, and Mishael, and Azariah, his fellows,

¹⁸ that they should ask mercy of the face of God of heaven on this sacrament, (or hid truth); and that Daniel and his fellows should not perish with other wise men of Babylon. (that they should ask for mercy from the God of heaven, and that he explain this secret, or this hidden truth, so that Daniel and his fellows would not die along with the other wise men of Babylon.)

¹⁹ Then the private was showed to Daniel by a vision in night. And Daniel blessed (the) God of heaven, (Then the mystery, or the secret, was revealed to Daniel by a vision in the night. And Daniel blessed the God of heaven,)

²⁰ and said, The name of the Lord be blessed from the world, and till into the world, for wisdom and strength be his; (and said, The Lord’s name be blessed forever and ever, for wisdom and strength be his;)

²¹ and he changeth times and ages, he translateth realms and ordaineth; he giveth wisdom to wise men, and knowing to them that understand teaching, either chastising; (and he changeth times and ages, he transfereth kingdoms and ordaineth them; he giveth wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those who understand teaching, or the disciplines;)

²² he showeth deep things and hid (or he revealeth secrets, or mysteries, and hidden things), and he knoweth things set in darknesses, and light is with him.

²³ God of our fathers, I acknowledge to thee, and I praise thee, for thou hast given wisdom and strength to me; and now thou hast showed to me those things which we prayed thee, for thou hast opened to us the word of the king. (God of our forefathers, I acknowledge to thee, and I praise thee, for thou hast given wisdom and strength to me; and now thou hast shown me those things for which we prayed to thee, for thou hast opened to us the matter concerning the king.)

¹⁴ Then Daniel hath replied with counsel and discretion to Arioch chief of the executioners of the king, who hath gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁵ He hath answered and said to Arioch the king's captain, 'Wherefore is the sentence so urgent from before the king?' Then Arioch hath made the thing known to Daniel,

¹⁶ and Daniel hath gone up, and sought of the king that he would give him time to shew the interpretation to the king.

¹⁷ Then Daniel to his house hath gone, and to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, he hath made the thing known,

¹⁸ and to seek mercies from before the God of the heavens concerning this secret, that they destroy not Daniel and his companions with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁹ Then to Daniel, in a vision of the night, the secret hath been revealed. Then hath Daniel blessed the God of the heavens.

²⁰ Daniel hath answered and said, 'Let the name of God be blessed from age even unto age, for wisdom and might — for they are His.

²¹ And He is changing times and seasons, He is causing kings to pass away, and He is raising up kings; He is giving wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to those possessing understanding.

²² He is revealing deep and hidden things; He hath known what is in darkness, and light with Him hath dwelt.

²³ Thee, O God of my fathers, I am thanking and praising, for wisdom and might Thou hast given to me; and now, Thou hast caused me to know that which we have sought from Thee, for the king's matter Thou hast caused us to know.'
