Amos 5:7-15 in English

⁷ Ye who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth,

⁸ seek him that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth (Jehovah is his name);

⁹ that bringeth sudden destruction upon the strong, so that destruction cometh upon the fortress.

¹⁰ They hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as ye trample upon the poor, and take exactions from him of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink the wine thereof.

¹² For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins—ye that afflict the just, that take a bribe, and that turn aside the needy in the gate from their right.

¹³ Therefore he that is prudent shall keep silence in such a time; for it is an evil time.

¹⁴ Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live; and so Jehovah, the God of hosts, will be with you, as ye say.

¹⁵ Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish justice in the gate: it may be that Jehovah, the God of hosts, will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

⁷ It is he that executes judgment in the height above, and he has established justice on the earth:

⁸ who makes all things, and changes them, and turns darkness into the morning, and darkens the day into night: who calls for the water of the sea, and pours it out on the face of the earth: the Lord is his name:

⁹ who dispenses ruin to strength, and brings distress upon the fortress.

⁷ You people distort what is fair/right and cause people to think that it is something that is very bitter; you treat good things as though they are evil.

⁸ Do you know who created all the groups of stars and put them in their places? Each morning he causes the darkness to become the dawn, and each evening he causes the daylight to become darkness. He scoops up water from the oceans to become clouds, and then he dumps the water from the clouds onto the earth. The one who does those things is named Yahweh.

⁹ He causes strong soldiers to be killed, and causes the ◄high walls around/fortresses of► cities to be torn down.

¹⁰ He is the one who will punish you because you hate those who challenge anyone who tries to make unjust decisions, and you hate those who tell the truth in your courts.

¹¹ You oppress poor people and force them to pay big taxes. You have built big stone mansions for yourselves, but you will not be able to live in them. You have planted vineyards, but there will not be any grapes for you to harvest to make wine.

¹² I know all of your sins and the terrible crimes that you have committed. You oppress righteous/honest people, and you accept bribes. You do not allow judges to treat poor people justly.

¹³ This is a time when many people do evil things, so people who have good sense say nothing when they hear about such things being done.

¹⁴ In order to remain alive, you must stop doing what is wrong, and start doing what is right. If you do that, the Commander of the armies of angels will be with you like you claim that he always is.

¹⁵ Love what is good, and hate what is evil! Try to cause judges in your courts to make decisions that are right/fair! If you do those things, perhaps the Commander of the armies of angels will act mercifully toward you descendants of Joseph who are still alive.

¹³ Therefore a prudent person keeps silent in such a time, for it is an evil time.

⁸ Go for help to him who makes Orion and the Pleiades, by whom the deep dark is turned into morning, who makes the day black with night; whose voice goes out to the waters of the sea, sending them out over the face of the earth: the Lord is his name;

⁹ Who sends sudden destruction on the strong, so that destruction comes on the walled town.

¹⁰ They have hate for him who makes protest against evil in the public place, and he whose words are upright is disgusting to them.

¹¹ So because the poor man is crushed under your feet, and you take taxes from him of grain: you have made for yourselves houses of cut stone, but you will not take your rest in them; the fair vine-gardens planted by your hands will not give you wine.

¹² For I have seen how your evil-doing is increased and how strong are your sins, you troublers of the upright, who take rewards and do wrong to the cause of the poor in the public place.

¹³ So the wise will say nothing in that time; for it is an evil time.

¹⁴ Go after good and not evil, so that life may be yours: and so the Lord, the God of armies, will be with you, as you say.

¹⁵ Be haters of evil and lovers of good, and let right be done in the public place: it may be that the Lord, the God of armies, will have mercy on the rest of Joseph.

⁷ Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth,

⁸ seek him that made the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: Jehovah is his name.

⁹ He causeth destruction to break forth suddenly upon the strong, and bringeth destruction upon the fortress.

¹⁰ They hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

¹¹ Forasmuch, therefore, as ye trample upon the poor, and take from him presents of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, and ye shall not drink the wine of them.

¹² For I know how manifold are your transgressions and your sins mighty: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the right of the needy in the gate.

¹³ Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in this time; for it is an evil time.

¹⁴ Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live; and so Jehovah, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye say.

⁸ Seek him that maketh Arcturus, and Orion, and that turneth darkness into morning, and that changeth day into night: that calleth the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name.

⁹ He that with a smile bringeth destruction upon the strong, and waste upon the mighty.

¹⁰ They have hated him that rebuketh in the gate: and have abhorred him that speaketh perfectly.

¹¹ Therefore because you robbed the poor, and took the choice prey from him: you shall build houses with square stone, and shall not dwell in them: you shall plant most delightful vineyards, and shall not drink the wine of them.

¹² Because I know your manifold crimes, and your grievous sins: enemies of the just, taking bribes, and oppressing the poor in the gate.

¹³ Therefore the prudent shall keep silence at that time, for it is an evil time.

¹⁴ Seek ye good, and not evil, that you may live: and the Lord the God of hosts will be with you, as you have said.

¹⁵ Hate evil, and love good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be the Lord the God of hosts may have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.

⁷ You twist justice and make it bitter, you throw integrity to the ground.

⁸ The One who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns the darkness into morning, and daytime into night, who calls for the water of the seas, and pours it down as rain upon the earth—the Lord is his name!

⁹ In a flash he cuts down the strong and destroys the fortresses.

¹⁰ You hate anyone who confronts injustice and loathe anyone who speaks honestly.

¹¹ Because you trample down the poor and impose a tax on their grain, building for yourselves impressive houses, you will not live in them, and you will not drink wine from the fine vineyards you have planted.

¹² For I know the extent of your wrongdoing and your numerous sins. You oppress good people by taking bribes, and you prevent the poor from getting justice in the courts.

¹³ So smart people keep quiet in such evil times.

¹⁴ Do what is right, and not evil, so you may live. Then the Lord God of power will be with you, as you claim he is.

¹⁵ Hate evil and love good—and make sure justice wins out in your courts. Maybe the Lord God of power will have mercy on those who are left of Jacob's people.

⁷ They turne iudgement to wormewood, and leaue off righteousnes in the earth.

⁸ He maketh Pleiades, and Orion, and he turneth the shadowe of death into the morning, and he maketh the day darke as night: he calleth the waters of the sea, and powreth them out vpon the open earth: the Lord is his Name.

⁹ He strengtheneth the destroyer against the mightie: and the destroyer shall come against the fortresse.

¹⁰ They haue hated him, that rebuked in the gate: and they abhorred him that speaketh vprightly.

¹¹ Forasmuch then as your treading is vpon the poore, and yee take from him burdens of wheate, ye haue built houses of hewen stone, but ye shall not dwel in them: ye haue plated pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drinke wine of them.

¹³ Therefore the prudent shall keepe silence in that time, for it is an euill time.

¹⁴ Seeke good and not euil, that ye may liue: and the Lord God of hostes shalbe with you, as you haue spoken.

¹⁵ Hate the euil, and loue the good, and establish iudgement in the gate: it may bee that the Lord God of hostes will be mercifull vnto the remnant of Ioseph.

¹¹ Therefore forasmuch as you tread down upon the poor, and ye take from him onerous contributions of corn: if ye have built houses of hewn stone, ye shall not dwell in them; if ye have planted pleasant vineyards, ye shall not drink their wine.

¹² For I know your manifold transgressions and your numerous sins: ye are those that are the adversaries of the just, that take a ransom, and that wrest the cause of the needy in the gate.

¹³ Therefore will the intelligent keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

¹⁴ Seek for the good, and not the evil, in order that ye may live: and so will the Lord, the God of hosts, be with you, as ye have said.

¹⁵ Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish justice firmly in the gate: perhaps the Lord the God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

¹⁰ They hate him that pleadeth in the gate, And abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

¹¹ Since, then, ye trample upon the poor, And take from him presents of wheat, Though ye build houses of hewn stone, ye shall not dwell in them; Though ye plant pleasant vineyards, ye shall not drink their wine.

¹² For I know that your sins are many, And your transgressions manifold, Ye who afflict the righteous, and take a bribe, And oppress the poor in the gate!

¹³ Therefore the wise man shall be silent at that time, For it shall be an evil time.

¹⁴ Seek ye good, and not evil, that ye may live; Then shall Jehovah, the God of hosts, be with you, as ye boast.

¹⁵ Hate ye evil, and love good, And establish justice in the gate; It may be that Jehovah, the God of hosts, will have pity upon the remnant of Joseph.

⁷ Those people turn justice into a bitter thing and throw righteousness down to the ground!”

⁸ God made the Pleiades and Orion; he turns darkness into the morning; he makes the day dark with night and calls for the waters of the sea; he pours them out on the surface of the earth. Yahweh is his name!

⁹ He brings sudden destruction on the strong so that destruction comes on the fortresses.

¹⁰ They hate anyone who corrects them in the city gate, and they abhor anyone who speaks the truth.

¹¹ Because you trample down the poor and take portions of wheat from him— although you have built houses of worked stone, you will not live in them. You have delightful vineyards, but you will not drink their wine.

¹² For I know how many are your offenses and how great are your sins— you who afflict the just, take bribes, and turn aside the needy in the city gate.

¹³ Therefore any prudent person is silent at such a time, for it is an evil time.

¹⁴ Seek good and not evil, so that you may live. So Yahweh, the God of hosts, will really be with you, as you say he is.

¹⁵ Hate evil, love good, establish justice in the city gate. Perhaps Yahweh, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

⁷ You who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth!

⁸ Seek him who made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns the shadow of death into the morning, and makes the day dark with night; who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the surface of the earth, Yahweh is his name,

⁹ who brings sudden destruction on the strong, so that destruction comes on the fortress.

¹⁰ They hate him who reproves in the gate, and they abhor him who speaks blamelessly.

¹¹ Therefore, because you trample on the poor and take taxes from him of wheat, you have built houses of cut stone, but you will not dwell in them. You have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine.

¹² For I know how many are your offenses, and how great are your sins— you who afflict the just, who take a bribe, and who turn away the needy in the courts.

¹³ Therefore a prudent person keeps silent in such a time, for it is an evil time.

¹⁴ Seek good, and not evil, that you may live; and so Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be with you, as you say.

¹⁵ Hate evil, love good, and establish justice in the courts. It may be that Yahweh, the God of Armies, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.”

⁹ That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.

¹⁰ They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.

¹² For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right .

¹³ Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

¹⁴ Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

¹⁵ Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.

⁸ and forsake him that maketh Arcturus or Pleiades and Orion, and him that turneth darknesses into the morrowtide, and him that changeth day into night; which calleth waters of the sea, and poureth out them on the face of the earth; the Lord is name of him.

⁹ Which scorneth destroying on the strong, and bringeth robbing on the mighty.

¹⁰ They hated a man reproving in the gate, and they loathed a man speaking perfectly.

¹¹ Therefore for that that ye robbed a poor man, and took from him the chosen prey, ye shall build houses with square stone, and ye shall not dwell in them; ye shall plant most loved vineyards, and ye shall not drink the wine of them.

¹² For I knew your great trespasses many, and your strong sins; enemies of the rightwise man, taking a gift, and bearing down poor men in the gate.

¹³ Therefore a prudent man shall be still in that time, for the time is evil.

¹⁴ Seek ye good, and not evil, that ye live, and the Lord God of hosts shall be with you, as ye said.

¹⁵ Hate ye evil, and love ye good, and ordain ye in the gate doom; if peradventure the Lord God of hosts have mercy on the remnants of Joseph.

⁸ and forsake him that maketh Arcturus and Orion, and him that turneth (the) darknesses into the morrowtide, and him that changeth day into night; which calleth waters of the sea, and poureth out them on the face of the earth; the Lord is name of him. (and desert him who maketh Arcturus, or the Pleiades, and Orion, and him who turneth the darkness into the morning, and him who changeth the day into the night; he who calleth to the waters of the sea, and poureth them out onto the face of the earth; the Lord is his name.)

¹⁰ They hated a man reproving in the gate, and they loathed a man speaking perfectly. (They hated the man who rebuked them in the court, and they loathed the man who spoke truthfully.)

¹¹ Therefore for that that ye robbed a poor man, and took from him the chosen prey, ye shall build houses with square stone, and ye shall not dwell in them; ye shall plant most loved vineyards, and ye shall not drink the wine of them. (And so for ye robbed the poor, and took away the chosen prey from them, ye shall build houses with square stones, but ye shall not live in them; ye shall plant the most beautiful vineyards, but ye shall not drink their wine.)

¹² For I knew your great trespasses many, and your strong sins; enemies of the rightwise man, taking a gift, and bearing down poor men in the gate. (For I know of your great many trespasses, and of your strong, or your mighty, sins; ye, the enemies of the righteous, taking bribes, and oppressing the poor in the courts.)

¹³ Therefore a prudent man shall be still in that time, for the time is evil. (And so the prudent shall be silent at that time, for the time is evil.)

¹⁴ Seek ye good, and not evil, (so) that ye live, and the Lord God of hosts shall be with you, as ye said (that he is).

¹⁵ Hate ye evil, and love ye good, and ordain ye in the gate doom (or and ordain ye justice in the court); if peradventure the Lord God of hosts have mercy on the remnants of Joseph.

⁷ Ye who are turning to wormwood judgment, And righteousness to the earth have put down,

⁸ The maker of Kimah and Kesil, And the turner to morning of death-shade, And day as night He hath made dark, Who is calling to the waters of the sea, And poureth them on the face of the earth, Jehovah is His name;

⁹ Who is brightening up the spoiled against the strong, And the spoiled against a fortress cometh.

¹⁰ They have hated a reprover in the gate, And a plain speaker they abominate.

¹¹ Therefore, because of your trampling on the poor, And the tribute of corn ye take from him, Houses of hewn work ye have built, And ye do not dwell in them, Desirable vineyards ye have planted, And ye do not drink their wine.

¹² For I have known — many are your transgressions, And mighty your sins, Adversaries of the righteous, taking ransoms, And the needy in the gate ye turned aside.

¹³ Therefore is the wise at that time silent, For an evil time it is.

¹⁴ Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live, And it is so; Jehovah, God of Hosts, is with you, as ye said.

¹⁵ Hate evil, and love good, And set up judgment in the gate, It may be Jehovah, God of Hosts, doth pity the remnant of Joseph.
