2 Kings 12:14-21 in English

¹⁴ for they gave that to them that did the work, and repaired therewith the house of Jehovah.

¹⁵ Moreover they reckoned not with the men, into whose hand they delivered the money to give to them that did the work; for they dealt faithfully.

¹⁶ The money for the trespass-offerings, and the money for the sin-offerings, was not brought into the house of Jehovah: it was the priests’.

¹⁷ Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it; and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem.

¹⁸ And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of Jehovah, and of the king’s house, and sent it to Hazael king of Syria: and he went away from Jerusalem.

¹⁹ Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

²⁰ And his servants arose, and made a conspiracy, and smote Joash at the house of Millo, on the way that goeth down to Silla.

²¹ For Jozacar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.

¹⁴ Only there were not to be made for the house of the Lord silver plates, studs, bowls, or trumpets, any vessel of gold or vessel of silver, of the money that was brought into the house of the Lord:

¹⁵ for they were to give it to the workmen, and they repaired therewith the house of the Lord.

¹⁶ Also they took no account of the men into whose hands they gave the money to give to the workmen, for they acted faithfully.

¹⁷ Money for a sin-offering, and money for a trespass-offering, whatever happened to be brought into the house of the Lord, went to the priests.

¹⁸ Then went up Azael king of Syria, and fought against Geth, and took it: and Azael set his face to go against Jerusalem.

¹⁹ And Joas king of Juda took all the holy things which Josaphat, and Joram, Ochozias, his fathers, and kings of Juda had consecrated, and what he had himself dedicated, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the Lord's house and the king's house, and he sent them to Azael king of Syria; and he went up from Jerusalem.

¹⁴ All that money was given to the men who were doing the work of repairing the temple.

¹⁵ The men who supervised the work always did things honestly, so the king's secretary and the Supreme Priest never required that the supervisors report what they had spent the money for.

¹⁶ But the money that people gave to pay for the wrong things that they had done and the money they gave to purify themselves because of the sins that they had committed was not put in the chest. That money belonged to the priests.

¹⁷ At that time, Hazael, the king of Syria, went with his army and attacked Gath city and conquered it. Then he decided that they would attack Jerusalem.

¹⁸ So Joash, the king of Judah, took all the money that the previous kings, Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, had dedicated to Yahweh. He added some of his own money, and all the gold that was in the rooms in the temple where valuable things were kept/stored, and the gold in his palace, and sent it all to King Hazael, to ◄appease him/persuade him to not attack Jerusalem►. So King Hazael took his army away from Jerusalem.

²⁰ Joash's officials plotted against him, and two of them killed Joash on the road that goes down to the Silla district. The two men who did that were Jozabad, the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad, the son of Shomer. Joash was buried in the place where his ancestors were buried, in the part of Jerusalem called ❛The City of David❜. Then Joash's son Amaziah became the king of Judah.

¹⁷ Then Hazael, king of Aram, went up against Gath and took it; and his purpose was to go up to Jerusalem.

¹⁸ Then Jehoash, king of Judah, took all the holy things which Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah his fathers, the kings of Judah, had given to the Lord, together with the things he himself had given, and all the gold in the Temple store and in the king's house, and sent it to Hazael, king of Aram; and he went away from Jerusalem.

¹⁹ Now the rest of the acts of Joash, and all he did, are they not recorded in the book of the history of the kings of Israel?

²⁰ And his servants made a secret design and put Joash to death at the house of Millo on the way down to Silla.

²¹ And Jozacar, the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad, the son of Shomer, his servants, came to him and put him to death; and they put him into the earth with his fathers in the town of David; and Amaziah his son became king in his place.

¹⁴ but they gave that to the workmen, and repaired the house of Jehovah with it.

¹⁵ And they did not reckon with the men into whose hand they gave the money to be bestowed on workmen; for they dealt faithfully.

¹⁶ The money of trespass-offerings, and the money of sin-offerings, was not brought into the house of Jehovah: it was for the priests.

¹⁷ Then Hazael king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and took it. And Hazael set his face to go up against Jerusalem.

¹⁴ For it was given to them that did the work, that the temple of the Lord might be repaired.

¹⁵ And they reckoned not with the men that received the money to distribute it to the workmen, but they bestowed it faithfully.

¹⁶ But the money for trespass, and the money for sins, they brought not into the temple of the Lord, because it was for the priests.

¹⁷ Then Hazael king of Syria went up and fought against Geth, and took it and set his face to go up to Jerusalem.

¹⁸ Wherefore Joas king of Juda took all the sanctified things, which Josaphat, and Joram, and Ochozias his fathers the kings of Juda had dedicated to holy uses, and which he himself had offered: and all the silver that could be found in the treasures of the temple of the Lord, and in the king’s palace: and sent it to Hazael king of Syria, and he went off from Jerusalem.

¹⁹ And the rest of the acts of Joas, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Juda?

²⁰ And his servants arose, and conspired among themselves, and slew Joas in the house of Mello in the descent of Sella.

²¹ For Josachar the son of Semaath, and Jozabad the son of Somer his servant struck him, and he died: and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David, and Amasias his son reigned in his stead.

¹⁴ It was used to pay the workers doing the repairs to the Lord's Temple.

¹⁵ No accounts were demanded from the men who received the money to pay the workers because they did everything honestly.

¹⁶ The money from the guilt offerings and sin offerings was not collected for the Lord's Temple because it belonged to the priests.

¹⁷ Around this time Hazael, king of Aram, went and attacked Gath, and captured it. Then he marched to attack Jerusalem.

¹⁸ So King Joash of Judah took all the holy objects dedicated by his forefathers Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Ahaziah, the kings of Judah, along with all the items he had dedicated himself, and all the gold found in the treasuries of the Lord's Temple and the royal palace, and he sent everything to Hazael, king of Aram. So Hazael retreated from Jerusalem.

¹⁹ The rest of what happened in Joash's reign and all that he did are recorded in the Book of Chronicles of the Kings of Judah.

²⁰ His officials plotted against him and murdered him at Beth Millo, on the road that goes down to Silla.

²¹ The officials who attacked and killed him were Jozacar, son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad, son of Shomer. They buried him with his forefathers in the City of David. His son Amaziah succeeded him as king.

¹⁴ But they gaue it to the workemen, which repayred therewith the house of the Lord.

¹⁵ Moreouer, they reckoned not with the men, into whose handes they deliuered that money to be bestowed on workemen: for they dealt faithfully.

¹⁶ The money of the trespasse offring and the money of ye sinne offrings was not brought into the house of the Lord: for it was the Priests.

¹⁷ Then came vp Hazael King of Aram, and fought against Gath and tooke it, and Hazael set his face to goe vp to Ierusalem.

¹⁸ And Iehoash King of Iudah tooke all the halowed thinges that Iehoshaphat, and Iehoram, and Ahaziah his fathers Kings of Iudah had dedicated, and that he himselfe had dedicated, and all the golde that was found in the treasures of the house of the Lord and in the Kings house, and sent it to Hazael King of Aram, and he departed from Ierusalem.

²⁰ And his seruants arose and wrought treason, and slewe Ioash in the house of Millo, when he came downe to Silla:

¹⁷ (12:18) At that time Chazael the king of Syria went up, and fought against Gath, and captured it: and Chazael directed his face to go up against Jerusalem.

¹⁸ (12:19) Then took Jehoash the king of Judah all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, and Achazyahu, his fathers, the kings of Judah, had dedicated, and his own hallowed things, and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the Lord, and in the king's house, and sent it to Chazael the king of Syria: and he withdrew from Jerusalem.

²¹ (12:22) And Yozachar the son of Shim'ath, and Yehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amazyah his son became king in his stead.

¹⁴ They gave this money to those who did the work of repairing the house of Yahweh.

¹⁵ In addition, they did not require the money paid for repairs to be accounted for by the men who received it and paid it to the workmen, because these men were honest.

¹⁶ But the money for the guilt offerings and the money for the sin offerings was not brought into the temple of Yahweh, because it belonged to the priests.

¹⁷ Then Hazael king of Aram attacked and fought against Gath, and took it. Hazael then turned to attack Jerusalem.

¹⁸ Joash king of Judah took all the things that Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah, his fathers, kings of Judah, had set apart, and what he had set apart, and all the gold that was found in the storerooms of the houses of Yahweh and of the king and he sent them to Hazael king of Aram. Then Hazael went away from Jerusalem.

¹⁹ As for the other matters concerning Joash, all that he did, are they not written in the book of the events of the kings of Judah?
