1 Kings 17:4-22 in English

⁴ And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

⁵ So he went and did according unto the word of Jehovah; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

⁷ And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

⁸ And the word of Jehovah came unto him, saying,

⁹ Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Sidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain thee.

¹⁰ So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

¹¹ And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.

¹² And she said, As Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in the jar, and a little oil in the cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

¹³ And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said; but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it forth unto me, and afterward make for thee and for thy son.

¹⁴ For thus saith Jehovah, the God of Israel, The jar of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that Jehovah sendeth rain upon the earth.

¹⁵ And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

¹⁶ The jar of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of Jehovah, which he spake by Elijah.

¹⁷ And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

¹⁸ And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? thou art come unto me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son!

¹⁹ And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the chamber, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

²⁰ And he cried unto Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

²¹ And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto Jehovah, and said, O Jehovah my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.

²² And Jehovah hearkened unto the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

⁴ And it shall be that thou shalt drink water of the brook, and I will charge the ravens to feed thee there.

⁵ And Eliu did according to the word of the Lord, and he sat by the brook of Chorrath before Jordan.

⁶ And the ravens brought him loaves in the morning, and flesh in the evening, and he drank water of the brook.

⁷ And it came to pass after some time, that the brook was dried up, because there had been no rain upon the earth.

⁸ And the word of the Lord came to Eliu, saying,

⁹ Arise, and go to Sarepta of the Sidonian land: behold, I have there commanded a widow-woman to maintain thee.

¹⁰ And he arose and went to Sarepta, and came to the gate of the city: and, behold, a widow-woman was there gathering sticks; and Eliu cried after her, and said to her, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

¹¹ And she went to fetch it; and Eliu cried after her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of the bread that is in thy hand.

¹² And the woman said, As the Lord thy God lives, I have not a cake, but only a handful of meal in the pitcher, and a little oil in a cruse, and, behold, I am going to gather two sticks, and I shall go in and dress it for myself and my children, and we shall eat it and die.

¹³ And Eliu said to her, Be of good courage, go in and do according to thy word: but make me thereof a little cake, and thou shalt bring it out to me first, and thou shalt make some for thyself and thy children last.

¹⁴ For thus saith the Lord, The pitcher of meal shall not fail, and the cruse of oil shall not diminish, until the day that the Lord gives rain upon the earth.

¹⁵ And the woman went and did so, and did eat, she, and he, and her children.

¹⁶ And the pitcher of meal failed not, and the cruse of oil was not diminished, according to the word of the Lord which he spoke by the hand of Eliu.

¹⁷ And it came to pass afterward, that the son of the woman the mistress of the house was sick; and his sickness was very severe, until there was no breath left in him.

¹⁸ And she said to Eliu, What have I to do with thee, O man of God? hast thou come in to me to bring my sins to remembrance, and to slay my son?

¹⁹ And Eliu said to the woman, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and took him up to the chamber in which he himself lodged, and laid him on the bed.

²⁰ And Eliu cried aloud, and said, Alas, O Lord, the witness of the widow with whom I sojourn, thou hast wrought evil for her in slaying her son.

²¹ And he breathed on the child thrice, and called on the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, let, I pray thee, the soul of this child return to him.

²² And it was so, and the child cried out,

²⁰ And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

²¹ And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.

²² And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

²² And the LORD hearkened unto the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

⁴ You will be able to drink water from the brook, and you will be able to eat what the crows bring to you, because I have commanded them to bring food to you.”

⁵ So Elijah did what Yahweh commanded him to do. He went and camped alongside Kerith Brook.

⁶ Crows bought bread and meat to him every morning and every evening, and he drank water from the brook.

⁷ But after a while, the water in the brook dried up, because rain did not fall anywhere in the land.

⁸ Then Yahweh said to Elijah,

⁹ “Go and live in Zarephath village, near Sidon city. There is a widow there who will give you food to eat. I have already told her what to do about that.”

¹⁰ So Elijah did what God said. He went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the gates of the village, he saw a widow who was gathering sticks. He said to her, “Would you please bring me a cup of water?”

¹¹ While she was going to get it, he called out to her, “Bring me a piece of bread, too!”

¹² But she replied, “Your God knows that what I am telling you is true: I do not have even one piece of bread in my house. I have only a handful of flour in a jar, and a little olive oil in a jug. I was gathering a few sticks to use these to make a fire and cook one more meal, and then after my son and I eat that, we will die from hunger.”

¹³ But Elijah said to her, “Do not be worried! Go home and do what you said that you were going to do. But first, bake me a little loaf of bread and bring it to me. After you do that, take what is left and prepare some food for you and your son.

¹⁴ I know that you will be able to do that, because Yahweh, the God whom we Israelis worship, says this: ‘There will always be plenty of flour and olive oil left in your containers, until the time when I send rain again and the crops grow again!’ ”

¹⁵ So the woman did exactly what Elijah told her to do. And she and her son and Elijah had enough food every day,

¹⁶ because the flour in the jar was never finished, and the jug of oil was never empty. That happened just like Yahweh had told Elijah that it would happen.

¹⁷ Some time later, the woman's son became sick. He continued to get worse, and finally he died.

¹⁸ So the woman went to Elijah and said to him, “You are a prophet; so why have you done this to me? Have you come here to punish me for my sins by causing my son to die?”

¹⁹ But Elijah replied, “Give your son to me.” So she gave her son to him, and he took the boy's body from her and carried it up the steps to the room where he stayed. He laid the boy's body on his bed.

²⁰ Then Elijah cried out to Yahweh, “O Yahweh my God, this widow has kindly allowed me to stay in her home. So why have you brought this tragedy to her and caused her son to die?” RHQ

²¹ Then Elijah stretched himself on top of the boy's body and called out to Yahweh saying, “Yahweh my God, please allow this boy to become alive again!” He did this three times.

²² Yahweh heard what Elijah prayed, and he caused the boy to become alive again DOU.

¹² She said, “As Yahweh your God lives, I don’t have anything baked, but only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jar. Behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”

¹³ Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go and do as you have said; but make me a little cake from it first, and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for you and for your son.

¹⁴ For Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘The jar of meal will not run out, and the jar of oil will not fail, until the day that Yahweh sends rain on the earth.’”

¹⁵ She went and did according to the saying of Elijah; and she, he, and her household ate many days.

¹⁶ The jar of meal didn’t run out and the jar of oil didn’t fail, according to Yahweh’s word, which he spoke by Elijah.

¹⁷ After these things, the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.

¹⁸ She said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, you man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to memory, and to kill my son!”

¹⁹ He said to her, “Give me your son.” He took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the room where he stayed, and laid him on his own bed.

²² Yahweh listened to the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

²¹ He stretched himself on the child three times, and cried to Yahweh and said, “Yahweh my God, please let this child’s soul come into him again.”

²² Yahweh listened to the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

¹⁰ So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and said, “Please get me a little water in a jar, that I may drink.”

¹¹ As she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

¹² She said, “As the LORD your God lives, I don’t have anything baked, but only a handful of meal in a jar and a little oil in a jar. Behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”

¹³ Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go and do as you have said; but make me a little cake from it first, and bring it out to me, and afterward make some for you and for your son.

¹⁴ For the LORD, the God of Israel, says, ‘The jar of meal will not run out, and the jar of oil will not fail, until the day that the LORD sends rain on the earth.’”

¹⁵ She went and did according to the saying of Elijah; and she, he, and her household ate many days.

¹⁶ The jar of meal didn’t run out and the jar of oil didn’t fail, according to the LORD’s word, which he spoke by Elijah.

¹⁷ After these things, the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.

¹⁸ She said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, you man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to memory, and to kill my son!”

¹⁹ He said to her, “Give me your son.” He took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the room where he stayed, and laid him on his own bed.

²⁰ He cried to the LORD and said, “LORD my God, have you also brought evil on the widow with whom I am staying, by killing her son?”

²¹ He stretched himself on the child three times, and cried to the LORD and said, “LORD my God, please let this child’s soul come into him again.”

²² The LORD listened to the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

⁴ The water of the stream will be your drink, and by my orders the ravens will give you food there.

⁵ So he went and did as the Lord said, living by the stream Cherith, east of Jordan.

⁶ And the ravens took him bread in the morning and meat in the evening; and the water of the stream was his drink.

⁷ Now after a time the stream became dry, because there was no rain in the land.

⁸ Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying,

⁹ Up! go now to Zarephath, in Zidon, and make your living-place there; I have given orders to a widow woman there to see that you have food.

¹⁰ So he got up and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the door of the town, he saw a widow woman getting sticks together; and crying out to her he said, Will you give me a little water in a vessel for my drink?

¹¹ And when she was going to get it, he said to her, And get me with it a small bit of bread.

¹² Then she said, By the life of the Lord your God, I have nothing but a little meal in my store, and a drop of oil in the bottle; and now I am getting two sticks together so that I may go in and make it ready for me and my son, so that we may have a meal before our death.

¹³ And Elijah said to her, Have no fear; go and do as you have said, but first make me a little cake of it and come and give it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.

¹⁴ For this is the word of the Lord, the God of Israel: The store of meal will not come to an end, and the bottle will never be without oil, till the day when the Lord sends rain on the earth.

¹⁵ So she went and did as Elijah said; and she and he and her family had food for a long time.

¹⁶ The store of meal did not come to an end, and the bottle was never without oil, as the Lord had said by the mouth of Elijah.

¹⁷ Now after this, the son of the woman of the house became ill, so ill that there was no breath in him.

¹⁸ And she said to Elijah, What have I to do with you, O man of God? have you come to put God in mind of my sin, and to put my son to death?

¹⁹ And he said to her, Give your son to me. And lifting him out of her arms, he took him up to his room and put him down on his bed.

²⁰ And crying to the Lord he said, O Lord my God, have you sent evil even on the widow whose guest I am, by causing her son's death?

²¹ And stretching herself out on the child three times, he made his prayer to the Lord, saying, O Lord my God, be pleased to let this child's life come back to him again.

²² And the Lord gave ear to the voice of Elijah, and the child's spirit came into him again, and he came back to life.

⁴ And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the torrent; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

⁵ And he went and did according to the word of Jehovah; he went and abode by the torrent Cherith, which is before the Jordan.

⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the torrent.

⁷ And it came to pass after a while that the torrent dried up, for there had been no rain in the land.

⁸ And the word of Jehovah came to him saying,

⁹ Arise, go to Zarephath, which is by Zidon, and abide there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to maintain thee.

¹⁰ And he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the entrance of the city, behold, a widow woman was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

¹¹ And she went to fetch it, and he called to her and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.

¹² And she said, As Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse; and behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

¹³ And Elijah said to her, Fear not; go, do as thou hast said; but make me thereof a little cake first; and bring it to me; and afterwards make for thee and for thy son.

¹⁴ For thus saith Jehovah the God of Israel: The meal in the barrel shall not waste, neither shall the oil in the cruse fail, until the day that Jehovah sendeth rain upon the face of the earth!

¹⁵ And she went and did according to the word of Elijah; and she, and he, and her house, ate a whole year.

¹⁶ The meal in the barrel did not waste, neither did the oil in the cruse fail, according to the word of Jehovah which he had spoken through Elijah.

¹⁷ And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.

¹⁸ And she said to Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come to me to call mine iniquity to remembrance, and to slay my son?

¹⁹ And he said to her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the upper chamber where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

²⁰ And he cried to Jehovah and said, Jehovah, my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

²¹ And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried to Jehovah and said, Jehovah, my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again!

²² And Jehovah heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child came into him again, and he lived.

⁴ And there thou shalt drink of the torrent: and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

⁵ So he went, and did according to the word of the Lord: and going, he dwelt by the torrent Carith, which is over against the Jordan.

⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and he drank of tile torrent.

⁷ But after some time the torrent was dried up, for it had not rained upon the earth.

⁸ Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying:

⁹ Arise, and go to Sarephta of the Sidonians, and dwell there: for I have commanded a widow woman there to feed thee.

¹⁰ He arose, and went to Sarephta. And when he was come to the gate of the city, he saw the widow woman gathering sticks, and he called her, and said to her: Give me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

¹¹ And when she was going to fetch it he called after her, saying: Bring me also, I beseech thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.

¹² And she answered: As the Lord thy God liveth, I have no bread, but only a handful of meal in a pot, and a little oil in a cruse: behold I am gathering two sticks that I may go in and dress it, for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

¹³ And Elias said to her: Fear not, but go, and do as thou hast said: but first make for me of the same meal a little hearth cake, and bring it to me: and after make for thyself and thy son.

¹⁴ For thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: The pot of meal shall not waste, nor the cruse of oil be diminished, until the day wherein the Lord will give rain upon the face of the earth.

¹⁵ She went and did according to the word of Elias: and he ate, and she, and her house: and from that day

¹⁶ The pot of meal wasted not, and the cruse of oil was not diminished, according to the word of the Lord, which he spoke in the hand of Elias.

¹⁷ And it came to pass after this that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick, and the sickness was very grievous, so that there was no breath left in him.

¹⁸ And she said to Elias: What have I to do with thee, thou man of God? art thou come to me that my iniquities should be remembered, and that thou shouldst kill my son?

¹⁹ And Elias said to her: Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him into the upper chamber where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

²⁰ And he cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord my God, hast thou afflicted also the widow, with whom I am after a so maintained, so as to kill her son?

²¹ And he stretched, and measured himself upon the child three times, and cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord my God, let the soul of this child, I beseech thee, return into his body.

²² And the Lord heard the voice of Elias: and the soul of the child returned into him, and he revived.

⁴ You can drink from the brook, and I have ordered ravens to bring you food you there.”

⁵ So Elijah did what the Lord told him. He went to the valley of the Cherith brook, where it meets the Jordan, and stayed there.

⁶ Ravens brought him bread and meat both in the morning and in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

⁷ A while later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.

⁸ Then the Lord told Elijah,

⁹ “Leave here and go to Zarephath near Sidon and stay there. I have given instructions to a widow there to provide you with food.”

¹⁰ So he left for Zarephath. When he arrived at the entrance to the town, he saw a woman, a widow, gathering sticks. He called her over and asked her, “Could you bring me a little water in a cup so I can have a drink?”

¹¹ As she was going to get it, he called after her and said, “Oh, and please bring me a piece of bread.”

¹² She replied, “As the Lord your God lives, I have no bread, only a handful of flour is left in a jar and a little bit of olive oil in a jug. Right now I am gathering a few of sticks so I can go and cook what's left for myself and my son so we can eat it, and then we'll die.”

¹³ Elijah said to her, “Don't be afraid. Go home and do what you said. But first make me a small loaf of bread from what you have and bring it to me. Then make something for yourself and your son.

¹⁴ For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not become empty and the jug of olive oil will not run out until the day the Lord sends rain to water the ground.”

¹⁵ She went and did as Elijah had told her, and Elijah, the widow, and her household were able to eat for many days.

¹⁶ The jar of flour was did not become empty and the jug of olive oil did not run out, just as the Lord had said through Elijah.

¹⁷ Later on the woman's son fell sick. (She was the one who owned the house.) He went from bad to worse, and finally he died.

¹⁸ “What are you doing to me, man of God?” the woman asked Elijah. “Have you come to remind me about my sins and cause my son to die?”

¹⁹ “Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He picked him up from her arms, carried him upstairs to the room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed.

²⁰ Then he cried out to the Lord, saying, “Lord my God, why have you allowed this to happen to this widow who has opened her home to me, this terrible tragedy of causing her son to die?”

²¹ He stretched himself out on the boy three times, and cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, please let this boy's life return to him!”

²² The Lord responded to Elijah's cry. The boy's life returned to him, and he lived!

⁴ And thou shalt drinke of the riuer: and I haue comanded the rauens to feede thee there.

⁵ So he went and did according vnto the word of the Lord: for he went, and remained by the riuer Cherith that is ouer against Iorden.

⁶ And the rauens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the euening, and he dranke of the riuer.

⁷ And after a while the riuer dryed vp, because there fell no rayne vpon the earth.

⁸ And the worde of the Lord came vnto him, saying,

⁹ Vp, and get thee to Zarephath, which is in Zidon, and remaine there: beholde, I haue commanded a widow there to sustaine thee.

¹⁰ So he arose, and went to Zarephath: and when he came to the gate of the citie, beholde, the widowe was there gathering stickes: and he called her, and sayde, Bring me, I pray thee, a litle water in a vessel, that I may drinke.

¹¹ And as she was going to fet it, he called to her, and sayde, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsell of bread in thine hand.

¹² And shee sayde, As the Lord thy God liueth, I haue not a cake, but euen an handfull of meale in a barrel, and a litle oyle in a cruse: and behold, I am gathering a fewe stickes for to go in, and dresse it for me and my sonne, that we may eate it, and dye.

¹³ And Eliiah said vnto her, Feare not, come, do as thou hast sayd, but make me thereof a litle cake first of all, and bring it vnto mee, and afterward make for thee, and thy sonne.

¹⁴ For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The meale in the barrel shall not be wasted, neither shall the oyle in the cruse be diminished, vnto the time that the Lord send rayne vpon the earth.

¹⁵ So she went, and did as Eliiah sayd, and she did eate: so did he and her house for a certaine time.

¹⁶ The barrell of the meale wasted not, nor the oyle was spent out of the cruse, according to the worde of the Lord, which he spake by the hand of Eliiah.

¹⁷ And after these things, the sonne of the wife of the house fell sicke, and his sicknesse was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

¹⁸ And she said vnto Eliiah, What haue I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come vnto me to call my sinne to remembrance, and to slay my sonne?

¹⁹ And he said vnto her, Giue me thy sonne. and he tooke him out of her bosome, and caryed him vp into a chamber, where he abode, and laid him vpon his owne bed.

²⁰ Then he called vnto the Lord, and sayde, O Lord my God, hast thou punished also this widowe, with whome I soiourne, by killing her sonne?

²¹ And he stretched himselfe vpon the childe three times, and called vnto the Lord, and saide, O Lord my God, I pray thee, let this childes soule come into him againe.

²² Then the Lord heard the voyce of Eliiah, and the soule of the child came into him againe, and he reuiued.

⁴ And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.'

⁵ So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD; for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before the Jordan.

⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

⁴ And it shall be, that out of the brook shalt thou drink; and the ravens have I ordained to sustain thee there.

⁵ And he went and did according to the word of the Lord; and he went and remained by the brook Kerith, that is to the east of the Jordan.

⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening: and out of the brook he used to drink.

⁷ And it came to pass after a while that the brook dried up; because there had been no rain in the land.

⁸ And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,

⁹ Arise, go unto Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and remain there: behold, I have ordained there a widow-woman to sustain thee.

¹⁰ So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, there was there a widow-woman gathering sticks of wood: and he called her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

¹¹ And as she went to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.

¹² And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have nothing baked, but a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in a cruise: and, behold, I am gathering a couple of sticks, that I may go in and prepare it for me and my son; and when we have eaten it, we shall have to die.

¹³ And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said; but make me thereof a little cake at first, and bring it out unto me, and for thee and for thy son shalt thou prepare something afterward.

¹⁴ For thus hath said the Lord the God of Israel, The jar of meal shall not fail, neither shall the cruise of oil diminish, until the day that the Lord giveth rain upon the face of the earth.

¹⁶ The jar of meal failed not, nor did the cruise of oil diminish, according to the word of the Lord, which he had spoken through means of Elijah.

¹⁷ And it came to pass after these events, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness became very severe, until that at length there was no breath left in him.

¹⁸ And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O man of God? thou art come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son!

¹⁹ And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the upper chamber, in which he abode, and he laid him upon his own bed.

⁵ And Elijah did according to the word of the Lord, and he sat by the brook of Cherith before Jordan.

⁶ And the ravens brought him loaves in the morning, and flesh in the evening, and he drank water of the brook.

⁷ And it came to pass after some time, that the brook was dried up, because there had been no rain upon the earth.

⁸ And the word of the Lord came to Elijah, saying,

⁹ Arise, and go to Zarephath of the Sidonian land: behold, I have there commanded a widow woman to maintain thee.

¹⁰ And he arose and went to Zarephath, and came to the gate of the city: and, behold, a widow woman was there gathering sticks; and Elijah cried after her, and said to her, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

¹¹ And she went to fetch it; and Elijah cried after her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of the bread that is in thy hand.

¹² And the woman said, As the Lord thy God lives, I have not a cake, but only a handful of meal in the pitcher, and a little oil in a cruse, and, behold, I am going to gather two sticks, and I shall go in and dress it for myself and my children, and we shall eat it and die.

¹³ And Elijah said to her, Be of good courage, go in and do according to thy word: but make me thereof a little cake, and thou shalt bring it out to me first, and thou shalt make some for thyself and thy children last.

¹⁴ For thus saith the Lord, The pitcher of meal shall not fail, and the cruse of oil shall not diminish, until the day that the Lord gives rain upon the earth.

¹⁵ And the woman went and did so, and did eat, she, and he, and her children.

¹⁶ And the pitcher of meal failed not, and the cruse of oil was not diminished, according to the word of the Lord which he spoke by the hand of Elijah.

¹⁷ And it came to pass afterward, that the son of the woman the mistress of the house was sick; and his sickness was very severe, until there was no breath left in him.

¹⁸ And she said to Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O man of God? hast thou come in to me to bring my sins to remembrance, and to slay my son?

¹⁹ And Elijah said to the woman, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and took him up to the chamber in which he himself lodged, and laid him on the bed.

²⁰ And Elijah cried aloud, and said, Alas, O Lord, the witness of the widow with whom I sojourn, thou hast wrought evil for her in slaying her son.

²¹ And he breathed on the child thrice, and called on the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, let, I pray thee, the soul of this child return to him.

²² And it was so, and the child cried out,

⁴ It will happen that you will drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”

⁵ So Elijah went and did as the word of Yahweh commanded. He went to live by the brook Kerith, east of the Jordan.

⁶ The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

⁷ But after a while the brook dried up because there was no rain in the land.

⁸ The word of Yahweh came to him, saying,

⁹ “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there. Look, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”

¹⁰ So he arose and went to Zarephath, and when he came to the gate of the city a widow was there gathering sticks. So he called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a jar so that I may drink.”

¹¹ As she was going to get water he called to her, and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread in your hand.”

¹³ Elijah said to her, “Do not fear. Go and do as you have said, but make me a little bread first and bring it out to me. Then afterward make some for you and for your son.

¹⁴ For Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, 'The jar of meal will not empty, neither will the jug of oil stop flowing, until the day that Yahweh sends rain on the earth.”

¹⁵ So she did as Elijah had told her. She and Elijah, along with her household, ate for many days.

¹⁶ The jar of meal did not empty, neither did the jug of oil stop flowing, just as the word of Yahweh had said, as he had spoken by Elijah.

¹⁷ After these things the woman's son, the woman who owned the house, fell sick. His sickness was so severe that there was no more breath left in him.

¹⁸ So his mother said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Have you come to me to remind me of my sin and to kill my son?”

¹⁹ Then Elijah replied to her, “Give me your son.” He took the boy from her arms and carried him up into the room where he was staying, and he laid the boy on his own bed.

²⁰ He cried to Yahweh and said, “Yahweh my God, have you also brought disaster on the widow with whom I am staying, by killing her son?”

²¹ Then Elijah stretched himself on the child three times; he cried out to Yahweh and said, “Yahweh my God, I beg you, please let this child's life return to him.”

²² Yahweh listened to the voice of Elijah; the life of the child returned to him, and he revived.

⁴ You shall drink from the brook. I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”

⁵ So he went and did according to Yahweh’s word, for he went and lived by the brook Cherith that is before the Jordan.

⁶ The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook.

⁷ After a while, the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.

⁸ Yahweh’s word came to him, saying,

⁹ “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to sustain you.”

¹⁰ So he arose and went to Zarephath; and when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and said, “Please get me a little water in a jar, that I may drink.”

¹¹ As she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

¹⁰ So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering sticks: and he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

¹¹ And as she was going to bring it , he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thy hand.

¹² And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but a handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

¹³ And Elijah said to her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me of it a little cake first, and bring it to me, and afterward make for thee and for thy son.

¹⁴ For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

¹⁵ And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

¹⁶ And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke by Elijah.

¹⁷ And it came to pass after these things that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so severe, that there was no breath left in him.

¹⁸ And she said to Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come to me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?

¹⁹ And he said to her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

²⁰ And he cried to the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

²¹ And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried to the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.

²² And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

⁶ And the crows bare to him bread and flesh early; and in like manner in the eventide; and he drank of the strand or stream.

⁷ And after some days the strand was dried; for it had not rained on the earth.

⁸ Therefore the word of the Lord was made to him, and said,

⁹ Rise thou, and go into Zarephath of Sidonians, and thou shalt dwell there; for I have commanded to a woman widow there, that she feed thee.

¹⁰ He rose, and went into Zarephath of Sidonians; and when he had come to the gate of the city, a woman widow gathering sticks appeared to him; and he called her, and said to her, Give thou to me a little of water in a vessel, that I drink.

¹¹ And when she went to bring it, he cried behind her back, and said, I beseech, bring thou to me also a morsel of bread in thine hand.

¹² And she answered, Thy Lord God liveth, for I have no bread, no but as much of meal in a pot, as a fistful may take, and a little of oil in a vessel; lo! I gather two sticks, that I enter, and make it to me, and to my son, that we eat, and die.

¹³ And Elijah said to her, Do not thou dread, but go, and make as thou saidest; nevertheless make thou first to me of that little meal a little loaf, baked under ashes, and bring thou it to me; soothly thou shalt make after-ward to thee and to thy son.

¹⁴ Forsooth the Lord God of Israel saith these things, The pot of meal shall not fail, and the vessel of oil shall not be abated, till to the day in which the Lord shall give rain on the face of the earth.

¹⁵ And she went, and did by the word of Elijah; and he ate, and she, and her house.

¹⁶ And from that day the pot of meal failed not, and the vessel of oil was not abated, by the word of the Lord, which he had spoken in the hand of Elijah.

¹⁷ Forsooth it was done after these words, the son of a woman house-wife, was sick, and the sickness was full strong, so that breath dwelled not in him.

¹⁸ Therefore she said to Elijah, What to me and to thee, thou man of God? Enteredest thou to me, that my wicked-ness should be remembered, and that thou shouldest slay my son?

¹⁹ And Elijah said to her, Give thy son to me. And he took that son from her bosom, and bare into the solar, where he dwelled; and he put him on his bed.

²⁰ And he cried to the Lord, and said, My Lord God, whether thou hast tormented also the widow, with whom I am sustained in all manner, that thou killedest her son?

²¹ He spread abroad himself, and was meted or measured upon the child by three times; and he cried to the Lord, and said, My Lord God, I beseech, the soul of this child turn again into the entrails of him.

²² The Lord heard the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the child turned again within him, and he lived again.

⁴ and there thou shalt drink of the strand (or and there thou shalt drink out of the stream); and I have commanded to the crows, that they feed thee there.

⁵ Therefore he went, and did by the word of the Lord; and when he had gone, he sat in the strand of Cherith, that is against Jordan. (And so he went, and did by the word of the Lord; and when he had gone forth, he sat by the Cherith Stream or he sat by the Cherith Gorge, that is east of the Jordan River.)

⁶ And the crows bare to him bread and flesh early; and in like manner in the eventide; and he drank of the strand. (And each morning the crows brought him bread and meat; and likewise in the evening; and he drank from the stream.)

⁷ And after some days the strand was dried (or And after some days the stream dried up); for it had not rained on the earth.

⁸ Therefore the word of the Lord was made to him, and said,

⁹ Rise thou (up), and go into Zarephath of (the) Sidonians, and thou shalt dwell there; for I have commanded to a woman widow there, that she feed thee, (or for I have commanded to a widow woman there, that she should feed thee).

¹⁰ He rose, and went into Zarephath of Sidonians; and when he had come to the gate of the city, a woman widow gathering sticks appeared to him; and he called her, and said to her, Give thou to me a little of water in a vessel, that I drink. (He rose up, and went to Zarephath of the Sidonians; and when he had come to the city gate, a widow woman gathering sticks appeared before him; and he called to her, and said to her, Give thou to me a little water in a vessel, so that I can have a drink.)

¹¹ And when she went to bring it, he cried behind her back, and said, I beseech, bring thou to me also a morsel of bread in thine hand.

¹² And she answered, (As) Thy Lord God liveth, for I have no bread, no but as much of meal in a pot, as a fistful may take, and a little of oil in a vessel; lo! I gather two sticks, that I enter, and make it to me, and to my son, that we eat, and die, (or behold! I am gathering only two sticks, so that I can go in, and make it up for me, and my son, so that we can eat, and then die).

¹³ And Elijah said to her, Do not thou dread, but go, and make as thou saidest; nevertheless make thou first to me of that little meal a little loaf, baken under ashes, and bring thou it to me; soothly thou shalt make afterward to thee and to thy son. (And Elijah said to her, Do not thou fear, but go, and make as thou saidest; but first make thou for me a small loaf from that little amount of meal, baked under ashes, and bring thou it to me; then afterward thou shalt make some for thee and thy son.)

¹⁴ Forsooth the Lord God of Israel saith these things (to you), The pot of meal shall not fail, and the vessel of oil shall not be abated, till to the day in which the Lord shall give rain on the face of the earth.

¹⁵ And she went, and did by the word of Elijah; and he ate, and she, and her house, (or and he, and she, and all of her household, or her family, ate for many days).

¹⁶ And from that day the pot of meal failed not, and the vessel of oil was not abated, by the word of the Lord, which he had spoken in the hand of Elijah (or which he had spoken by Elijah).

¹⁷ Forsooth it was done after these words, (that) the son of a woman housewife, was sick, and the sickness was full strong, so that breath dwelled not in him. (And it was done after these things, that the son of that woman housewife, was sick, and the sickness grew very strong, so that finally no breath remained in him.)

¹⁸ Therefore she said to Elijah, What to me and to thee, thou man of God? Enteredest thou to me, that my wickedness should be remembered, and that thou shouldest slay my son?

¹⁹ And Elijah said to her, Give thy son to me. And he took that son from her bosom, and bare into the solar, where he dwelled; and he put him on his bed. (And he took her son from her bosom, and carried him up to the solarium, where he stayed; and he put him on his bed.)

(Then he stretched himself over, or above, the child three times; and he cried to the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, I beseech thee, let the soul of this child return to his entrails.)

⁴ and it hath been, from the brook thou dost drink, and the ravens I have commanded to sustain thee there.'

⁵ And he goeth and doth according to the word of Jehovah, yea, he goeth and dwelleth by the brook Cherith, that is on the front of the Jordan,

⁶ and the ravens are bringing to him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and of the brook he drinketh.

⁷ And it cometh to pass, at the end of days, that the brook drieth up, for there hath been no rain in the land,

⁸ and the word of Jehovah is unto him, saying,

⁹ 'Rise, go to Zarephath, that is to Zidon, and thou hast dwelt there; lo, I have commanded there a widow woman to sustain thee.'

¹⁰ And he riseth, and goeth to Zarephath, and cometh in unto the opening of the city, and lo there, a widow woman gathering sticks, and he calleth unto her, and saith, 'Bring, I pray thee, to me, a little water in a vessel, and I drink.'

¹¹ And she goeth to bring it, and he calleth unto her and saith, 'Bring, I pray thee, to me a morsel of bread in thy hand.'

¹² And she saith, 'Jehovah thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but the fulness of the hand of meal in a pitcher, and a little oil in a dish; and lo, I am gathering two sticks, and have gone in and prepared it for myself, and for my son, and we have eaten it — and died.'

¹³ And Elijah saith unto her, 'Fear not, go, do according to thy word, only make for me thence a little cake, in the first place, and thou hast brought out to me; and for thee and for thy son make — last;

¹⁴ for thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, The pitcher of meal is not consumed, and the dish of oil is not lacking, till the day of Jehovah's giving a shower on the face of the ground.'

¹⁵ And she goeth, and doth according to the word of Elijah, and she eateth, she and he, and her household — days;

¹⁶ the pitcher of meal was not consumed, and the dish of oil did not lack, according to the word of Jehovah that He spake by the hand of Elijah.

¹⁷ And it cometh to pass, after these things, the son of the woman, mistress of the house, hath been sick, and his sickness is very severe till that no breath hath been left in him.

¹⁸ And she saith unto Elijah, 'What — to me and to thee, O man of God? thou hast come unto me to cause mine iniquity to be remembered, and to put my son to death!'

¹⁹ And he saith unto her, 'Give to me thy son;' and he taketh him out of her bosom, and taketh him up unto the upper chamber where he is abiding, and layeth him on his own bed,

²⁰ and crieth unto Jehovah, and saith, 'Jehovah my God, also on the widow with whom I am sojourning hast Thou done evil — to put her son to death?'

²¹ And he stretcheth himself out on the lad three times, and calleth unto Jehovah, and saith, 'O Jehovah my God, let turn back, I pray Thee, the soul of this lad into his midst;'

²² and Jehovah hearkeneth to the voice of Elijah, and the soul of the lad turneth back into his midst, and he liveth.
