John 8:34-55

³⁴Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I tell you, whoever sins is a slave of sin.

³⁵A slave doesn’t remain in the house forever, but a son does belong forever.

³⁶Therefore if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

³⁷“I know that you are Abraham’s descendants, but you seek to kill me, because my word has no place in you.

³⁸I talk about what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

³⁹They answered, “Abraham is our father.” Jesus told them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham,

⁴⁰but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God. Abraham didn’t do this.

⁴¹You do the deeds of your father.” Then they said to Him, “We weren’t born of fornication. We have one Father — God.”

⁴²Jesus said, “If God were your Father, you would sincerely love me, for I came from God, and now am here. I haven’t come of my own initiative, but He sent me.

⁴³Why don’t you understand what I say? It’s because you can’t accept my words.

⁴⁴You are of your father, the Devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn’t stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar, and the father of lies.

⁴⁵Because I tell the truth, you don’t believe me.

⁴⁶Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why don’t you believe me?

⁴⁷Whoever is from God hears God’s words. The reason you don’t hear them is that you aren’t from God.”

⁴⁸The Jews answered and asked Him, “Aren’t we right in saying that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?”

⁴⁹Jesus answered, “I don’t have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.

⁵⁰I don’t seek glory for myself, but there is One who seeks it, and He is the judge.

⁵¹Most assuredly, I tell you, anyone who keeps my word will never see death.”

⁵²Then the Jews answered Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Abraham is dead, and the prophets, and You say, ‘Anyone who keeps my word will never taste death.’

⁵³Surely You aren’t greater than our forefather Abraham, who died? The prophets died too. Who do You claim to be?”

⁵⁴Jesus answered, “If I honor myself, my honor is nothing. It’s my Father, who you say is your God, who honors me.

⁵⁵Yet you haven’t come to know Him, but I know Him. If I said, ‘I don’t know Him,’ I would be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word.
